This popular 1990's song "Brenda's Got a Baby", by 2pac Shakur, describes much of the issues that Jessica Field's covers in her work "Children Having Children". Often times it is hard for us to put things into context but I think that the song and the video are parallels to one another. In the video Brenda is young has an illegitimate child because of lack of education, and an unsecure home life. Also, Shakur talks about how Brenda's family doesn't that she has a child as long as they "get first dibs" on the welfare check when it comes. Although this is not the case in every circumstance and can be a common misconception Brenda's circumstance can be real, and lack of sex education can perpetuate the cycle of endangering lives because of stubbornness. Although Field's gives the example of the argument "...sexual knowledge would defile young people and initiate them sexually" (551), it has become very apparent to me that lack of education is far more dangerous that educating children and giving them access to the help that they need to lead healthy, productive lives.
