Extra Credit-Fitness Industry

The presentation by Dhruv Goel and Thomas Jang was about gender roles and binaries in the fitness industry. They discussed what the typical male and female roles in these adds consisted of. The woman, being inferior and misogynist, and they males portrayed power and dominance. They used and ad for Nike running shoes to show how the commercial creates a sort of rivalry between men and women. They also showed an advertisement from a body building website to illustrate their point about choosing a gender. The site showed a man and a woman, and you were able to pick from these two categories. The man showed how to build muscle (dominance) and the women showed how to loose fat (submission). The presentation also touched on the roles of race as portrayed in fitness magazines, and how it is constructed within the body building world.
