I thought this was a great topic for this assignment. American Apparel ads have been known for displaying extremely sexualized images and it was really interesting to hear a group engage and analyze some of the images. I thought this group did an excellent job of analyzing how gender was coded into each of the images. A major part of this presentation used what was talked about in the Codes of Gender movie we watched. In many of American Apparel's ads, they portray women in typical "feminine" positions such as a cocked head or contorted body. Another interesting aspect of this presentation was when they talked about the man behind the company and his run in's with sexual assault allegations and how women are treated behind the scenes as well as portrayed in their ads. Overall, I thought this presentation was extremely well done. I really enjoyed listening to their analysis of certain images and hearing them apply what we've read in class.
