I think by taking the word gay out of such a socially accepted and appropriate song demonizes it in a harmful way. Yes, the meaning of gay has shifted from when it meant "happy" and often in negative ways. However, I think we reinscribe its negativity and act as if it's a word we shouldn't hear or say. This closes off the possibility for discussion and education (especially to young children) about non-normative sexualities and non-heteronormative families.
