Last week's definition: Leadership is a skill that can be used in virtually every situation. A strong leader uses a combination of many different leadership methods in order to tailor the leaderships effectiveness to specific situations. A good leader empowers others, creates trustworthy relationships, helps others take responsibility of their own situations, and delegates work efficiently. A leader takes into account the group as a whole when making decisions by understanding the roles of individuals, the purpose of the group, and the ideas or opinions of other group members. A strong leader not only tells others what to do by delegating tasks but also, is rooted in servant leadership and is constantly working towards improving his or her serving skills. He or she does not judge based on appearances but rather treats each and every individual like they are the most important priority. Strong leadership starts with having a a clear, authentic, and grounded personal vision so that they may be able to guide and direct others towards a certain goal. The more clearly a leader is rooted in his or her personal beliefs and vision the more sound his or her ethical reasoning and decision-making will be. A strong leader has the ability to inspire others in times of crisis to make a change in order to continue to succeed in a fast-paced world. In addition, a strong leader has the ability to step back from a situation in order to reanalyze it and approach it in a different way.

This week's definition: Leadership is a skill that can be used in virtually every situation. A strong leader uses a combination of many different leadership methods in order to tailor the leaderships effectiveness to specific situations. A good leader empowers others, creates trustworthy relationships, helps others take responsibility of their own situations, and delegates work efficiently. A leader takes into account the group as a whole when making decisions by understanding the roles of individuals, the purpose of the group, and the ideas or opinions of other group members and the context in which they are communicating. A strong leader not only tells others what to do by delegating tasks but also, is rooted in servant leadership and is constantly working towards improving his or her serving skills. He or she does not judge based on appearances but rather treats each and every individual like they are the most important priority.
Analysis: This week I incorporated the idea of context in regards to communication. After reading the article by Saphiere, I thought it was important to include that a good leader understands the contexts from which people are communicating so that there is minimal miscommunication between groups or individuals. Although it is extremely difficult to always keep in mind, good leaders take into account the physical context, the constraints, the roles, the historical context, the chronology, the language, and the relationship in order to better understand what the individual is trying to communicate (Saphiere, D. H., Mikk, B. K., & Devries, B. I. (2005). "Factors Affecting Communication Style: Starring acts in the circus." 47 - 82.).

Analysis: This week I kept my definition the same as last week without making any changes. I thought the reading by Boyatzis was very interesting however many of the qualities talked about in the reading have already been touched on in my emerging definition of leadership. For example, according to Boyatzis, a strong leader has the ability to step back and re-analyze himself in order to essentially figure out what is and what isn't working within the group (Boyatzis, R. E. (2006). "An Overview of Intentional Change from a Complexity Perspective." Journal of Management Development, 25(7), 607-623. doi:10.1108/02621710610678445). I thought this was similar to my statement that "a strong leader has the ability to step back from a situation in order to re-analyze it and approach it in a different way". I do agree with the reading though, that it is extremely important to self-reflect in order to help close the gap between your real self and your ideal self (Boyatzis, R. E. (2006). "An Overview of Intentional Change from a Complexity Perspective." Journal of Management Development, 25(7), 607-623. doi:10.1108/02621710610678445).

Analysis: This week I incorporated some ideas from Komives' article "Interacting in Teams and Groups" into my emerging definition of leadership. I believe a strong leader understands the interactions that occur between groups and takes them into account when trying to make decisions. After reading Komives' article I agree that a strong leader understands the purpose or goal the group is working towards, he or she understands the roles each member plays, and is conscious of the time frame of the group (knows how to motivate when groups get stuck in a rut) (Komives, S. R., Lucas, N., & McMahon, T. R. (1998). "Interacting in Teams and Groups." Exploring Leadership: For college students who want to make a difference (pp. 165 - 194). San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.).

Analysis: This week I made sure to include what I thought was an extremely important characteristic of a leader, "He or she does not judge based on appearances but rather treats each and every individual like they are the most important priority". I believe that a leader really gains trust in his or her followers by treating each and every individual with respect and by making a personal connection with them. I really liked the course reading "The Warren Harding Error" because it opened my eyes to see that we all make assumptions unconsciously that effect our relationships, job, or connections in the future. It is extremely important to take active steps to manage and control our impressions or judgements of others because often times they are incorrect or misleading, therefore we should treat everyone with the same attitudes and respect. (Gladwell, M. (2005). "The Warren Harding Error: Why we fall for tall, dark, and handsome men." Blink: The power of thinking without thinking (pp. 72 - 98). New York: Pushkin Enterprises.)

Analysis: This week I did not make any changes between my two definitions. After reading the three articles for this week I did not feel like there was any new information that I have not already stated in my emerging leadership definition. The one article that resonated the most with me was "The Transcultural Leader..." I agree with the article that it is important for a leader to have respect and be curious about other cultures in order to create a stronger team and build relationships within ("The Transcultural Leader: Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault, Nissan"). Although I thought this was important I believe I already have a little bit of this in my emerging definition when I state that, "A good leader empowers others and creates trustworthy relationships". If there is cultural diversity a good leader will respect the cultural differences and empower others and create trustworthy relationships in new ways.

Analysis: After reading the articles from this week I thought it was important to include what I thought was the most important piece of information from the article "Get on the Balcony". I thought it was really important for leaders to understand and practice stepping away from a situation in order to approach a problem in a different way in order to ultimately find a better solution or reasoning for the issue at hand. I really liked the analogy given by the authors of getting on the balcony and looking down at the dance occurring (Heifetz, R. A., & Linsky, M. (2002). "Get on the balcony." Leadership on the Line: Staying alive through the dangers of leading (pp. 51 - 74). Boston: Harvard Business School Press.). I think it is very important for a leader to be able step back from constantly leading and self-reflect on the situation at hand in order to get a different perspective.

A strong leader has the ability to inspire others in times of crisis to make a change in order to continue to succeed in a fast-paced world.

Analysis: This week I thought it was important to include servant leadership skills in my definition. I believe that a strong leader not only leads others towards a goal but also serves others through many skills talked about in the article "Becoming a Servant Leader: Do you have what it takes?" Barbuto, J. E., & Wheeler, D. W. (2007). "Becoming a Servant Leader: Do you have what it takes?" Retrieved from www.ianrpubs.unl.edu/epublic/live/g1481/build/g1481.pdf. According to the authors, Barbuto and Wheeler, Calling, listening, Empathy, Healing, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization, Foresight, Stewardship, Growth, and Building Community are all qualities of servant leadership. Some of these qualities come naturally and some need persistant work. I think a strong leader naturally has many qualities of a servant leader and is constantly working on the weaker qualities in order to continue growth with others.

Last week's definition: Leadership is skill that can be used in virtually every situation. A strong leader uses a combination of many different leadership methods in order to tailor the leaderships effectiveness to specific situations. A good leader inspires others, creates trustworthy relationships, helps others take responsibility of their own situations, and delegates work efficiently. Strong leadership starts with having a a clear, authentic, and grounded personal vision so that they may be able to guide and direct others towards a certain goal. The more clearly a leader is rooted in his or her personal beliefs and vision the more sound his or her ethical reasoning and decision-making will be.

This week's definition: Leadership is skill that can be used in virtually every situation. A strong leader uses a combination of many different leadership methods in order to tailor the leaderships effectiveness to specific situations. A good leader empowers others, creates trustworthy relationships, helps others take responsibility of their own situations, and delegates work efficiently.

Analysis: This week I added another sentence to the end of my definition. I thought it was important to include that Leadership includes the ability to instill change during hard times, even if it has been a long standing tradition. In order to continue moving forward and succeeding things must continue to develop and evolve, especially in times of a "crisis". I agree with our reading from last week- when an organization is faced with a crisis or a challenge a strong leader needs to seize the opportunity for change and mobilize everyone in order to help generate solutions (Heifetz, R., Grashow, A., & Linsky, M. (2009). "Leadership in a (permanent) crisis." Harvard Business Review, 87(7), 62-69. Retrieved from http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=keh&AN=41997981&site=ehost-livee) I think it is absolutely integral that a strong leader have the ability to decide what it is that is important to a group and what needs to change so that they can continue moving ahead (even if it is extremely difficult to let go of).

Last week's definition: Leadership is skill that can be used in virtually every situation. A strong leader uses a combination of many different leadership methods in order to tailor the leaderships effectiveness to specific situations. A good leader empowers and inspires other to be the best they absolutely can be. He/she creates trustworthy relationships in order to help establish strong team bonds. Instead of making decisions and taking complete control of a situation alone, a leader helps others to step forward and take responsibility of their own situations. In addition, a leader is able to effectively delegate work to others in order to get tasks completed efficiently. Strong leadership starts with having a a clear, authentic, and grounded personal vision so that they may be able to guide and direct others towards a certain goal.

The more clearly a leader is rooted in his or her personal beliefs and vision the more sound his or her ethical reasoning and decision-making will be.

Analysis: My defintion from last week to this week has been changed. For the most part I just condensed my definition leaving the same major concepts. However, at the end I did add another important element to leadership- sound ethical reasoning. After reading Kidder's article "The Ethics of Right vs. Right" there was a really strong point that stood out to me- people who have a conscious sense of vision and deep ethical values face the toughest decisions and are more apt to agonize over choices. (Kidder, R. M. (2003). "Overview: The ethics of right vs. right." How Good People Make Tough Choices (pp. 13 - 29). New York: Simon & Schuster.) I thought this was extremely important to my leadership definition because personal vision plays a large role in sound ethical decision making. Although the clearer vision you have does make it more complicated to make decisions, in fact, it is only helping you make a more sound ethical decision instead of a possibly egocentrical one.

Analysis: My definition from last week to this week did have a minor addition to it. After reading "Ground your Leadership in Personal Vision" I agree with the authors- personal vision is an important concept for a leader to have. Therefore, in my definition this week I made sure to incorporate personal vision. According to the authors, Lee and King, the leader must have a clear and grounded vision of what they want their life to be like. Then, once that personal vision is established a leader can focus on how strong leadership fits into that vision. I thought this was extremely important because if a Leader does not have internal clarity they will lack the clarity to efficiently guide and direct others, and will ultimately go nowhere. Lee, R. J., & King, S. N. (2001). "Ground your leadership vision in a personal vision." Discovering the Leader in You: A guide to realizing your personal leadership potential (pp. 31 - 54).
Analysis: This week my definition of leadership changed so that I included two crucial elements of leadership- trust and the use of different leadership styles. After reading and discussion from last week I realized that I strong leader did not just use one method of leading, rather he/she used a combination of leadership styles (authoritative, coercive, democratic, etc.) in order to fit each specific situation. Goleman, Daniel (2000). "Leadership that Gets Results." Harvard Business Review, 78(2), 78-90. I also thought my definition needed "trust" because trust is one of the most important qualities for a strong leader to have with his/her followers/employees. Without trust you will not have a strong, efficient, and hardworking team. I thought the course readings were very valuable to my definition of leadership. I do agree with the readings that I strong leader needs to be able understand the situation he/she is in and choose the most effective style that is going to bear results.
