Exploitive Advertisement

Skyy.jpg

I chose to analyze a Skyy vodka advertisement that I had previously seen in Details Magazine. The ads purpose is to sell the company’s alcoholic beverage using the help of a woman in the image. The advertisement shows the woman in a negative connotation. There is a man in a suit standing directly over a woman in a swimsuit that appears to be tanning. It can be assumed that the woman is unbothered by the presence of the domineering man. This shows how it’s supposed to be ok for a woman to be the subordinate to the man. The man is holding a bottle of Skyy in one hand and two glasses in the other. It looks as though he is clenching the objects in his hand and it can be inferred that the woman below him has no choice but to have drinks with him. This shows dominance as being sexy, and that women have no authority over the men. In terms of the woman she is thin with full breasts, and presents the idea that women should live up to this standard to be attractive to men.
The lighting in the picture is very exploitive and further demoralizes the woman. The framing of the picture shows the crotch area as being directly over the face of the woman and it is highlighted to accentuate that area. The woman’s breasts are also lighted in the way to draw the reader’s eye to that area. The product in this ad becomes secondary because the reader will be attracted to the breasts and crotch, and then realize that is an ad for Skyy. The clothing in the ad shows the man as having economic status with further pushes the idea that the more money the man has the more inferior the woman has to be. Her lack of clothing shows her as an object to the man and that is why he has chosen her to have drinks with him.

Comments

The comment to this ad is far more sexist than the ad itself. The observation made are nothing, but personal connotations lacking any logical explanations. The comment does not provide us with facts, only with one's opinions and does so without any rational backup.

I could also counter-argue that the woman does not even need to stand up when a man is standing above her. He needs to be expensive-dressed to prove worthy, whereas she only needs to raise her eyebrows (demostrated by her sunglasses) to swiftly reject his offer. And so on and so forth... but those are not facts, only my opinions. Understoog? ;)

^How could you not see this ad as derigitory?
the woman is lying in a submisive position with the man clearly dominant over her.. Enough said.

Cleo is right in that this ad can be considered derogatory - but towards men. The woman is pictured as superior, part of the upper echelon where money and time are of no consequence. She is afforded the life of leisure and excess.

The man, on the other hand, is subjugated to wearing a hot suit on a beach, obviously being forced into working attire because of his social-economic class. He is forced to server her, a slave to her rich whims, to provide alcohol and fancy glasses while she continues to recline on the beach.

She has the image of control in this ad, as demonstrated by her contempt of the man's obvious arousal, nature's reaction as the result of the woman's unabashed flaunting of her sexuality. The lighting in this ad focuses on the woman, making her the center of attention. This relays that she is the center of the universe, while the man is simply a part of the scene to be used by the woman, with clothing intended to simply blend into the sky.

The man is a clearly frustrated in his tormented role in life, subservient to this woman's sexual whims and torments. This is demonstrative of his subordinate role, as shown by his symbolically holding the glasses (symbol of breasts) in one hand, and the bottle (symbol of the phallus) in the other hand. They are separated by the unnatural distances sympolized by the extremes of his grasp. Neither the glasses nor the bottle are caressed in the loving position that nature intended, but instead in near masturbatory position due to her aloofness and coldness.

or maybe I am making all this up too?

i feel like she is right like this is what i have to say about this ad... This ad for Skyy Vodka that i found on the internet represents how sex is used to sell products in todays culture. The purpose of this ad is to sell vodka using the image of scantally clad woman. The man is standing directly over the woman who is in a swim suit a who appears to be sun tanning. It appears that the woman is not bothered by this man: who looks to be domineering over her. I think that this ad makes it look O.K. for the to be controlled by men. He is also holding the Drink and glasses in a fist over her. i wounder does she really has a choice in sayin “No to him.
The picture in this ad that Skyy is using is making the dominance over a woman look sexy. The woman portrayed in this ad is very full breasted, thin and tanned making the standards in which woman should strive for greater. Th highlighted portions of this picture, first draws your eyes to the woman's breasts, then to the mans crotch by the way his jacket is placed. Therefore the reader will focus in on this long before ever seeing the Skyy vodka. the clothing the man is wearing appears to be expensive further pushing the idea that the economic status of the man is more important and that the woman is inferion to him. More like an object to be dominated or owned than an individual.
I think that the use of this in teen and youth Magazines is more prevalent tht it should be in the past advertizings like this was only in magazines that would be read by adults. Over the last ten years it has become more prevelant in magazines geared towards pre-teens and teenagers. I feel like woman and men need to speak out and refrain from this tupe of ads which perpetuates the stereo typing of women. I beleive that this type of ad encourages the abusive acts of men women in our society. I feel that if your weren’t ads like this we would see less abouse of woman and more respect towords them.

You all need to read JEAN KILBOURNE's: "Two Ways a Woman can Get Hurt": Advertising and Violence.

The ad is offensive to women. The article will help you understand the FACTS why. BTW that woman on the ad is fake, she's 3d, I know, I make these 3d ads.

Cleo,

that was hilarious! I am an art director and make ads like this all the time and that is exactly what I try to portray!

its depressing to discover that there are ppl out there that dont find this ad offensive...these ppl are the reason progress towards equality is extremely slow..as a woman when i see this ad it makes me feel low

what this ad is telling me is that this woman is sunbathing and the man wants to have a drink with her and the only way to get her attention is to stand in her sun. He then gets her attention to reveal sky vodka. I think it's telling a story more so than sending a message. The composition of the picture is very geometric and creative, it causes the eye to move up the photo to the vodka.
