BE A WOMAN!! BE A FAN!
This commercial can be seen on any popular televison channel. I have seen it about a dozen times just watching daytime television. The product that is being sold is NFL apparel for women.
The commercial is very empowering. I usually buy NFL apparel in small male sizes, but this commerical is telling the viewer that women should be involved as football fans as well. This is significant because being a "football fan" is seen as a male hobby. I usually have really surprised looks by people when I get excited about watching football. This commercial (appart from making profit) is making a very gendered activity into one that is equal amoung the genders. It is going to make women more inspired to break apart from the gender roles, and watch/represent football if they want to without getting teased. Yet, one must realize that the women in the commercial are still very good looking and thin. It does send the image of the ideal beautiful woman.
The wardrobe of the women is obviously NFL apparel, yet the clothing is feminine. The clothes the women are wearing are tighter fitting tanktops/zip-up jackets/t-shirts and they appeal to the style that women are currently wearing. The lighting is creating a pretty normal atmosphere. It is still rather light as to bring out the colors of the apparel and to see the beauty of the women, but it is not exagerated in any way. The framing of the shot focuses on the women, and their actions. This is to bring out the fact that they are wearing NFL apparel and are exciting for the game that they are about to watch. Also, the framing does focus on their bodies to show that these women are thin and beautiful, espcially the shot of the one women's butt.
I think this video is awesome! It is telling women to go ahead and be proud that they are women and they are fans of football. The women in the video have a sort of attitude that tells the viewer that they don't care what anyone says about what they enjoy. They are all watching the game together without any men in the video, which is really empowering because they don't need men to watch football and (like the stereotypes ential) tell them what is going on.
