NO!

I am very glad I got to see this movie. My minor is in African American studies, so I especially liked it because of that. I agreed with a lot of the critiques of the form of the film that we discussed afterwards, but I have to say, while I was watching (even though this is a film studies course) I was so moved by the content that I really didn’t notice anything bad, at least not to the point of distracting me from the message.

Being a white woman who has never been sexually abused I couldn’t relate directly to the women in the film. I did, however, feel outrage, compassion, love, sadness, and a strong connection to these women. Although I have never gone through what these women went through I do know some females and males who have. Also, this film made me question myself and my past when I have compromised my wants or non wants to please a man. Having to reevaluate my past experiences in this way has been quite an eye opener to say the least. I also liked hearing the experiences of the women fighting in the civil rights movements while fighting sexism from the men they were fighting alongside. It was interesting to get that “behind the scenes” account of a big event in Americas past. So, all in all, I agree that there were some things that could have been done in the filmmaking choices but I think this film is important anyways.

I certainly agree! This is an IMPORTANT and very relevant film.

Our discussion will continue next week...
