As to the Dove Real Beauty Campaign:
I think its awesome that this is out there - many women are unaware of how distorted the images of beauty in the mass media really are. I think its important that modern feminists focus on and publicize the fact that the "ideal" image has now become truly unattainable - women who professionally look "good" and spend all of their time and energies trying to attain the "ideal" image can not even fulfill it now. The way I understand it, computer editing of models is now the standard in fashion magazines and advertisements, proving that the American standard of beauty has actually become physically impossible. This is fucked up, to put it bluntly, and I'm glad that Dove is calling attention to this fact. However, I find it interesting that their real beauty campaign is still a sales pitch; that Dove is still selling beauty products for women to modify and "improve" their bodies with. So really I can't say for sure how I feel about it - watching something I care about intensely like feminism be commodified is a sad thing for me, but I can hardly argue with the positive effects that I assume the Dove campaign must be having in some women's lives.

As to A Girl Like Me:
I also really like this video. I've been trying a lot lately to remember that all of my experiences are raced, and to think about how they would be different if I was black. But imagining doesn't mean I have any idea what its like to be black, and although I will never really know, this video definitely made me think about some race issues that I hadn't thought about before and expanded my understanding of racial inequality a tiny bit. Skin bleaching cream? I didn't even know they made that. Now that I do, I find it pretty horrifying.

DOVE: I watched that video about six times. I had no idea that it took that much to make a woman look "beautiful." I knew that there was airbrushing and makeup involved, but they also added "photoshop" elements to her entire picture as well as photo plastic surgery (they elongated and thinned out her neck and changed the shape of her shoulders). When they were finished she didn't even look like the same woman! I paused the part where they made her eyes bigger and I couldn't believe how weird they looked (I probably wouldn't have noticed if it weren't for the video). I definately feel better about myself after watching this. I also sent it to my friends for them to watch.
