Leadership is the ability to inspire and influence others to perform at a high level for a common goal. Leadership can be done through words or actions, but usually requires both. There are several ways to lead, but you must yourself above all else. Each leader must decide which techniques and ways to lead are best for them. In order to do this they must determine what are their core values are, and let those shape their leadership style. Each situation is also different, and a leader must be able to see each situation from every perspective and decide the best way to handle it, even if it is not easy. Leaders must not put themselves above their team, and must be open to change and improvement.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions
I decided to leave my definition as is this week. The readings talked about communication, both online and offline, which has a huge impact on leadership. However, even though communication is a huge part of leadership, I couldn't find a good way to include it in my definition.

I decided not to add anything to my definition this week. I could have added something to the end of my definition about the ICT, but I didn't think it was necessary to my definition. However, I do think it is a great model and will apply it to myself and my leadership abilities.

This week I added a sentence about leaders identifying their team type. I already have talked about how leaders must identify the situation that they are in and decide what type of leader they are. But I didn't talk about looking at their team, which is the main idea in both readings. Leaders have to know their teams inside and out in order to effectively lead.

I didn't change anything this week in my definition because I didn't think the readings had much to do with leadership, but instead was more about societal issues we face today. They were mainly about race issues and stereotypes and I didn't see the relevance to leadership.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions
This week, I added the last sentence that summarized my main takeaway from the Kegan and Lahey reading. I thought this was important for a couple reasons. First, leaders must be able to admit they are not perfect and are open to listening and changing. Second of all, it sends the wrong message if the leader puts himself above his team. The Heifetz and Linsky reading I found to be very true, such as when I finish a season and need to step back to see what really happened. However, I didn't think it changed anything in my definition.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions
I did not change anything in my definition this week. Once again, I found the readings very interesting and they brought up a lot of good points, but I think my definition includes most of it already. I think that most leaders should first be servants, but not all have to be, and I already have included that there are many ways to lead. The Astin reading I agreed with, but it didn't have anything groundbreaking. I already have something in my definiton about having a common goal and being authentic.

I decided not to change anything on my definition this week. I decided not to because the reading had more to do with the changing environment in which leaders must live, not as much about what a leader acutally is. I do think the information provided is valuable though, and is an interesting take on the new fast paced environment of the world.

This week I changed above all you must be honest, to yourself. I did this because in the Kidder reading I realized that some right vs. right situations require loyalty over honesty. Each situation is different, and when taking into account both readings, I determined that you must analyze the situation from all perspectives, be objective, and take appropriate action, even if it must be tough.

This Week's Definition
Leadership is the ability to inspire and influence others to perform at a high level for a common goal. Leadership can be done through words or actions, but usually requires both. There are several ways to lead, but you must be honest above all else. Each leader must decide which techniques and ways to lead are best for them. In order to do this they must determine what are their core values are, and let those shape their leadership style.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions
This week I added a lot to my definition, but it all comes back to one main idea; values shape leadership. This is the main thing I took from the readings this week. You can't try to be someone else as a leader, you need to be honest with yourself about what you value and use that to shape your style. From the Terry reading I realized you have to decide how to lead and what you feel is important. In my life right now I am realizing if you do not lead by your values, the people you are trying to lead will realize and you will be inconsistent and not as passionate.

The only thing I changed was adding the sentence about honesty and the number of ways one can lead. I did this because the articles really made me realize and think about how important trust is in order to inspire and influence people like I said. The articles also explained several ways one can choose to lead, some more effective than others. I still am not sure the articles made a big enough of a deal of leading by example.
