Advanced Medical Spanish 0344
06:30 P.M. - 08:40 P.M. , Tu (03/23/2009 - 05/10/2009)
This is an advanced course designed to help health care professionals communicate with patients who speak Spanish, this course will further develop and strengthen the language skills and cultural awareness.
Individual work is done on WebCT and CD-ROM. Activities focus on vocabulary, listening, reading, writing, and exploring cultural issues. This course is partially internet delivered.
Prerequisites: Completion of Span 0144, two years of college Spanish, or equivalent

These courses are zero-credit with a grade basis of S/N. Academic credit will not be granted. A credit version of this course is available through the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies.

Instructor
María Emilce López has an M.A. in both ESL and Hispanic Linguistics and teaches in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies. A native of Jujuy, Argentina, she studied and worked as a teacher there. María Emilce develops materials for teaching Spanish for specific purposes as well as creating technology-enhanced learning experiences.

National experts on health disparities will speak at the “Health Equality: Honoring Culture While Closing the Gap� conference, November 12 – 14, 2008, at Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel in Prior Lake Minnesota. The conference is sponsored by the Office of Minority and Multicultural Health of the Minnesota Department of Health.

The conference will explore innovative ways to create health equality for all Minnesotans and celebrate effective health initiatives designed to reduce disparities. The conference will also recognize the work of local organizations that are dedicated to reducing health disparities in Minnesota and acknowledge groups from across the country engaged in promoting health equality.

Featured speakers include:

· Michael E. Bird, MSW, MPH, health consultant and past president of the American Public Health Association
· Gail C. Christopher, MD, Vice President for programs at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
· Roberto Dansie, PhD, trainer and author of Eternal Wellsprings and Semillas De Esperanza
· Dr. Garth Graham, MD, MPH deputy assistant secretary for Minority Health in the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
· Doua Thor, executive director of Southeast Asia Resource Action Center

In addition to the featured speakers, 35 local and national organizations will share their expertise on research and best practices for reducing health disparities. General Continuing Education Units (CEU), social work and nursing contact hours will be provided.

A wide range of people are encouraged to attend the conference, including representatives of community and non-profit organizations, public health and social service agencies, health plans, and racial and ethnic communities.

Minnesota is consistently ranked as one of the healthiest states in the nation; however, racial and ethnic minorities and other under-served populations often experience significant disparities. They are less likely to have or use health insurance, more likely to experience teenage pregnancies, more likely to experience violent death before age 21, and more likely to experience death from diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Who Should Attend: This conference is designed for clinicians, nurses and other health professionals; community, public health and social services staff; clinic administrators & finance managers; and others working to improve the health status of at-risk and underserved populations.

Keynote Speaker: Joia Mukherjee, MD, MPH, a 1992 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, is an expert in the scale up of treatment for complex disease in poor countries. As Medical Director of Partners In Health http://www.pih.org/, she has overseen the expansion of successful HIV/AIDS treatment programs in Haiti and Rwanda, as well as the scale up of treatment programs for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Peru and 14 states in the Russian Federation.

Incorporating what she has learned from her experiences with under-resourced agencies in impoverished communities, Dr. Mukherjee will speak on "Engaging a Community in Disease Management."

Dr. Mukherjee is a respected voice in global health policy, a sought after teacher and speaker at a wide range of venues around the world, having lectured at universities and major medical conferences in 14 countries. She is also an extensively published and well-respected researcher, who is currently principal investigator on three studies examining various aspects of her work in Haiti.

and fellow alumni for a rare evening with author Paul Rusesabagina.

Can one person make a difference? Paul Rusesabagina's inspiring
transformation from hotelier to protector of neighbors and strangers caught
in the middle of the Rwandan conflict provides a powerful answer. Students will
have the rare opportunity to bring their inquiries to Rusesabagina, in
person on Nov. 3. He will present a public event at Northrop Auditorium.

At this Project Homeless Connect event, people have the opportunity to access services at the Minneapolis Convention Center, such as housing, medical, legal, educational, and other community services.

Volunteers are needed to help run this event. The December event will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. with two shifts for volunteers: (1) 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and (2) 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All volunteers are asked to arrive by 9:00 a.m.

Training for the December 8 Project Homeless Connect is required for all volunteers except those who trained and volunteered for a previous event. To make the volunteer experience better and to offer the best service to the guests, current training for this event is strongly recommended for returning volunteers. You will receive a reminder of the training shortly before the date you choose.

Purpose of this presentation is to update participants on the work of MNA's
Cultural Diversity Task Force, which involved focus groups with area nurses
about working in a diverse environment of patients and staff. A preview of
the planned Tool Kit for working in a culturally diverse organization will
be presented, with time for input and feedback.

Objectives: At the completion of this conference the participant will be
able to: · Describe the process of cultural competence as it applies to
healthcare personnel · Discuss three of the key issues raised during focus
groups with area RNs, related to cultural diversity in the workplace. ·
Identify two interventions that nurses could use in the workplace to
celebrate a culturally diverse staff.

Presenter: Mary Tanner, PhD, RN, teaches Maternity Nursing, Leadership and
Management and Global Health at School of Nursing, College of St.
