PR do's ad don'ts for Tony Seeman

In my interview with Tony Seeman who is a reporter and and anchor for ABC KSAX in Alexandria Minnesota, we went over the time constraints that reporters face and how your PR story can get put on the air. Because reporters are under an enormous amount of stress, it is vital that your media pitch be short and to the point. Content is everything for reporters and if you don't have it, then it's safe to say that your story will not get published. In a virtual sea of emails, it is important that yours has quality content along with being short and to the point. Someone trying to get a story must present their content within the first few sentences. Facts that you sen may be irrelevant to the reporter airing your story, so a ton of facts that don't pertain to the main message of the story should be avoided at all costs. Reporters don't need to and don't have the time to sift through a bunch of facts to try and find the relevant information. If you always send good pitches, than you will build a relationship of trust with that reporter and are more likely to be at the top of the list when the check their emails. Honesty is key when sending reporters pitches and angles for stories. They are going to research the stuff you send them so make sure that it's not embellished with misleading facts or quotes that can't be verified. You should also always make sure that your lines of communication are open and checked often. Reporters sometime need clarity on something you send them. So it is important to get back to them in a timely manner so your story can be aired. After all is said and done, reporters are human and have a lot to do with very little time to do it. Make sure you have good, short and relevant content for them and get back to them as soon as possible. If you follow some of these guidelines, you are sure to have future success as a public relations practitioner.

Tribes by Seth Godin Reviewed

Seth Godin wrote a book about tribes that many people follow. It shows how an ordinary person with a strong belief in something can create a following and that following can become a tribe. The book also talks about the power of tribes and how even really small tribes can create social change and essentially change the status quo. The book also shows how social media creates leverage for these tribes and helps them to gain power. Social media gives helps change the status quo around the world. this can either be a problem for PR practitioners or a huge help. The fact that a small group of people can reach so many people and have such a significant impact shows us that power lies with the people and tribes that can gain followers virtually overnight. This is an excellent book that show the power of social media and gives good insights into how it is creating these tribes virtually where they used to be geographically centered.

The president and Democrats lose the house

The GOP's fear campaign takes down Obama and Democrats.
Ever since the 2008 campaign where the democrats destroyed the republicans and Obama took office, the GOP has been in an all-out attack mode. They have really just sat back and shot many of the differetn bills in congress down.
Public Relations
This is really all just one big public relations loss for President Obama. Despite many of the great and wonderful things he has done in order to create health care and lower taxes, people are still believing Fox news and others that none of these things are good for the country.
Taxes
It has been said that the Obama tax cuts are the single largest tax cut in history and people still believe that obama is going to raise their taxes and make america a socialist country. Again we look at a very strategic public relations campaign where the GOP attacks the president and congress and in the mean time developes a pact to say no to everything the President and the Democrats are trying to do.
Healthcare
Despite passing a landmark healthcare reform bill giving healthcare to virtually everyone in america, the President has also failed to give this a good push as well. The conversation was quickly turned on euphenasia as a main point of the bill. I remember people shouting that Obama "wants to kill old people." This crazy subject went on ann on. I heard one old man say at a town hall meeting that the healthcare bill
"looked like something out of 1930's Germany."
Of course this was just another strategic move by the republicans to play on peoples fears. We find ourselves talking about killling grandma (which isn't true) instead of all the really good stuff we'll get with the bill.

The Media and GOP

Another thing that has helped the GOP destroy everything the President and Democrats have done, is a twenty four hour news network that despite having the most viewers out of all the other news networks, still says they are not the main stream. Between Glenn Beck, Hannity and Bill O'Reilly a person would think that the President came riding in on a three headed demon that ate small children. Yet this tactic of being the largest but somehow the underdog has work really well. They have come up with slogans like "the lame stream media." This has been a huge help for the GOP and other fear mongers out there, who would have you believe that your whole family is going to die rather actually debate someone on honest issues.
Again, Public Relations
Once again this all come down to public relations. The president and the democrats have simply failed to do anything substantial about it. This has become evident in the recent polls and projections of the midterm elections. We'll just have to see whats next.
