I do not like politics. In fact, I am anti-government. Throughout the duration of this post, think of me as "Anarchist Pata." I often find myself asking the same question that Pink Floyd asks in their famous album, The Wall. "Mother should I trust the government?" The answer is no. To be quite frank, I have more opinions on toothpaste and Febreze... which is why I chose to write about those issues instead of this one. My feelings towards my toothpaste and Febreze have more of an effect on me than the presidential candidates. Presidents tend to buckle in extreme situations and do not always do as they say they will (they're humans, just like all of us). I believe in three things....1) a God 2) karma and 3) fate. One of these three things will take care of me, and I choose not to obsess over political issues.
Okay, fair enough...anarchism is a body of thought based on specific principles. It's important, intellectually speaking, for you to take the trouble to articulate your particular political stance; after all, anarchism is a political ideology too. Why do you think anarchism is best for society? No one's saying you have to choose a side: Democrat or Republican; however, I do want each of you to employ critical thinking in the arguments you make (and I'm including blog posts as arguments here). To play devil's advocate, here is what I consider a good reason to care about U.S. politics and the election:
Elected officials represent you, and even if neither candidate agrees with you on every issue, he will have the power to make decisions on your behalf, so it's in your interest to vote for the person who will best represent your values and interests.
As a corollary to the above claim, elected officials, possessing such power to vote in the Senate and House, to pass or veto bills, and to appoint Supreme Court justices, are able to exercise considerable power over you and your life in a number of ways. Here are some right off the top of my head:
1. They can pass a law that sends you to war.
2. They can pass laws that allow the government to access your library and medical records without your knowledge.
3. They can seriously limit your civil rights, including freedom of speech.
4. They can pass laws that allow corporations to pollute the water you drink, the food you eat, and the air you breathe.
Posted by: Clancy at September 27, 2004 09:53 PMWell, I WAS going just agree with you Pata, but Clancy has scared that out of me. In a way I feel that as me just being one out six billion says enough about what my thoughts mean to a "President", but I don't maybe if one comes together, that one can make a million and one. You never know...VOTE KERRY!!! :)
