animal cruelty

I actually went to the website and read the article about the factory farming. A friend of mine went to this seminar two nights ago about the whole factory farming thing and she was converted into a vegetarian after she watched a movie about the whole thing. She came back and was very excited to try to convert me too. It is very very sad to think of how they treat the animals especially the de-beaking of the chickens just so they don't peck eachother apart. They throw the weak animals in a pile where they can't do anything to save themselves because they are in such poor conditions. I don't believe that farmers should be that selfish just to make more money. Especially when it affects the animals like it does. Animals don't deserve to be treated badly, even more so because they are helpless and haven't done anything wrong to deserve it. I also have the other side of the spectrum because my dad came from a farm. They raised their own animals and also butchered the animals themselves. So I am totally all about family farms because I know that they don't treat their animals badly. I don't think that I'm going to convert to be a vegetarian, but it's definitely something to be concerned about. SOrry if this blog is totally random and confusing... I'm currently trying to watch Laguna Beach, my new favorite show! See you all in class on Friday!!

I think that becomming a vegetarian would be very hard since a lot of people would be surprised at the number of foods they eat that actually have sort of animal product in them. So many foods are processed with all sorts of things that the only way to know you're not eating an animal is to prepare all of your own food and look at all the ingredients. I'm an animals science major and I'm a biology-ecology nut and I think that being omniverous is healthy and normal for people; however, the treatment of animals described I think is unethical and I think a lot of people just look the other way because they'd rather not know what's going on but if more people knew how the animals were treated it would make a difference in the market place and maybe farmers wouldn't be so far down that spectrum. There's a fine line between growing animals to eat and then torturing animals before eating them, people as the beings we are should not be that way. I mean nature can cruel, yes, but people can be sadistic, and that's wrong.
