TOOO Much Juice in the game!!!

Whats happening yall how u doin I am doing my reasearch paper on how steroids in the game of baseball has hurt the game in the last ten years. Here is some background info for yall. In the past decade The number of homeruns hit has skyrocketted. many has contributed this to the use of Steriods. Last year Ken Caminitti a former American Leauge MVP in 1996 Went public and said the year that he won the MVP he was using steriods regularly. i was jus wondering if u think is cheating because steroids give players more power to hit home runs. jus wondering your feelings.

hey there, about steroids...i don't know much about them. i have a general background of them. i know that they increase strength and it is illegal to use them most, if not all, sports. i don't really know that background of steroids or the precautions that are taken to make sure people are using them in major sporting events. hope i helped! good luck with the research!

I've heard most people say that using steroids to enhance players' performance is totally illegal. Personally I think I would have to agree that it is not right! My feeling is that you are taking steroids, so you have a much better chance of doing well !! It just seems so unfair to people who practice so hard and do their best (legally) without using stimulants/steroids...That's my opinion on this whole steroids issue. At the same time I can't say that I know much about these chemicals and their side effects so I could definately benefit from hearing your research paper presented. Good Luck !!!!!

Big Willie,
Hey there!
I think your topic is a good one, especially after the excitment with the Twins this season. I honestly don't know too much about steroids, but I d know they have been used in sports to give players more energy, ect. From my point of view, I don't necessarily see it as cheating if a player/team takes them, I just see it as disloyal. Professional sports players get so much money for what they do and they get it because they have a gift. Steroids, just add to that talent i guess, but not always in a good way. It just isn't natural, and that is the only thing that bothers me. Sorry that my comment wasn't too helpful. I got lost in what I was saying. I am interested in reading your paper though. Good Luck!

Hey, Willie, I'm planning a Toulmin schema example around this topic to talk about in class tomorrow (which will definitely help you as you write the draft of your prospectus, and your classmates too!). What I find the most interesting about the argument you're making is that it's rooted in your ethical standards about sportsmanship and the ethical choices athletes make. You clearly have closely-held values that inform your argument that steroids have hurt the game, and I'm looking forward to hearing you articulate them. What is it about the game that steroids compromise or damage? What is ethically acceptable for athletes to do to enhance their performance? Athletes do lots of other stuff besides take steroids: What makes steroids worse than vitamins, herbs, or doing that thing where you donate a few pints of blood, store it, and then take the extra blood right before the game? (There must be a term for that practice, but I have no idea what it is.) See what I'm doing here? I'm refuting your warrant. To make your thesis an enthymeme:

Athletes should not take steroids because their doing so hurts the game.

Claim: Athletes should not take steroids

Reason: because their doing so hurts the game

Warrant: Athletes should not do anything (or in this case, *take* anything for performance enhancement) that hurts the game.

Now I'm refuting the warrant by asking, "What makes steroids worse than vitamins, herbs, loading up on carbs, or doing that thing where you donate a few pints of blood, store it, and then take the extra blood right before the game? Do all those things also hurt the game?" You'd put this question under "Conditions of Rebuttal" in the Toulmin schema. But more on that tomorrow in class.

Hi. I think that using steriods is unfair. They don't let you use steriods in the olympics, and I personally believe that sports should be treated the same way. The best man wins, not the one who is physically altered.
