Nursing Shortage

Lately, I have been working my butt off when it comes to my studies. I have to get an amazing GPA this semester in order to have any chance at getting into the U of MN's Nursing School. Currently, the school accepts 25% of the applicants. I have a hard time understanding this because there is such a nursing shortage. If nurses are in such high demand right now, then why can't they admit a higher number of qualified people into the nursing schools? If you ask me, nursing programs everywhere need to be expanded and utilized to educate more nurses... thus eliminating the shortage.

Hey Pata!
I agree with you on the issue of accepting nurses due to shortages, but I think the requirements are placed there in order of safety. I think there is a number of misguided nurses out there (not you) that don't know what they are doing. They slack off in high school and college, and when they get the position, they end up killing one of the patients, which I am sure has happened in the history if BAD NURSING.
Thank you for your time

I also agree that if there is a shortage then they should admit more people in the school. but the only problem of this is that the more people that the school admits the lower the average grades for the school will go because the will allow the lower class percentage.

a friend of mine goes to st.scholastica in duluth. she was going to transfer to the uofm nursing program but decided not to after she saw how rediculious the requirments were. i agree with you they should let more people in. in the next ten years they are going to wish that they would have with the nursing shortage!

Hey doll!
I completely agree with you. There is no reason for the lack of addmittees into nursing school as long as there is a shortage for nuring care. Believe me, when I was in the hospital last year for a little over a month, a lot of the nurses were telling me about how bad it was in the hospital because of the shortage. Hospital and ect. need all the nurses they can get, and I do not understand the shortage for them? Well actually now I somewhat do, it is because they aren't letting enough people into nursing schools! I know you are going to be a great nurse. I wish you the best of luck! Remember to have faith!!!!
