Hey Alia! I know a small amount about polygamy involving religions. Isn't it the opposite idea of monogamy or am I totally wrong on this? I think I learned about cultures that practice polygamy in one of my high school history courses. Sorry that I'm not of much help, but I guess now you know that at least one person doesn't know alot about the subject! This post has made me somewhat interested now though since I cannot remember much about the topic. Well good luck with your research! ~Courtney

Alia,
I am very embarrassed to say this, but I have no idea what your topic is about. I am sorry that I am no help whatsoever. I am very interested in learning about it though. As always, I like to learn about new things.

Hey, I think this would help, but you probably already know this. I just know that it is the practice of having more more than one person to like(spouse).I know that if you look up the history of muslims religion you would probably see that the males can have more than one wife. I say when you are trying to find an argument for that just look at the american history of marriage and see how they argue on what marriage should be.

I remember hearing some things in the paper about polygamy a while back. Its where a man has multiple wives i think. I dont know much about it beyond that

Well Ronnie, you are right about polygamy being multiple wives, but in fact polygmay is not only allowed in Islam, it is also allowed in Christianity and Judaism. I will be discussing this in my paper.

Polygamy is multiple spouses, no gender specified.
Polyandry is one wife, multiple husbands.
Polygyny is one husband, multiple wives.

While it is a cultural taboo in the united States, there are no clear prohibitions of polygyny in the bible. There are over 40 people listed in the bible that had multiple wives. Gods laws given to Moses even direct how a man is to treat multiple wives and how to handle inheritance among children from multiple wives.

There is a movement to decriminalize polygyny and allow the estimated 30,000 families in the to be free from persecution.

There are over 600 cultures in the world that accept polygamy.

People wonder how a man can love more than one woman? Isn't his love divided between them? When a woman has more than one child, is her love divided between them? No, the love just multiplied! The same with more than one wife.

Women sometimes complain that all the good men are already married. Women should not be forced to choose a husband from the remaining pool of men. Well, polygyny would allow some good men to marry more than one wife if he could support them properly. Some women want to have a career. But they also want children. It is unfair to the children to have both mother and father away at work all day. In a polygynous household, one mother may have a career while the other mother remains home with the children! The children get the advantage of a full time parent plus the women get the freedom to expand their lives.

Hey Mike thanks for your comments. You seem to know a lot about polygamy! I have researched all of those websites that you mentioned, and I agree with people who say that polygamy should be legal.

You are welcome for the information. Are you currently compiling a paper on the subject? Is there any research or discussions going on in the sociology department?

It is an uncommon topic. And women that are able to live in a polygynous relationship are very rare. It is refreshing to meet someone that approaches the subject with an open mind.

If you wish to expand your research, I can put you in contact with a woman that is leading the field in polygyny education and research.
