What do you guys think about evolution? Do you think that it should be taught in schools? Were you forced to learn about it? Did your teacher make sure that you knew it was only a theory? Please take some time to answer these questions for me, this is a very important topic, I will appreciate any and all comments.
I don't really know what to think about evolution. I think I believe in both evolution and chriastionism. I am catholic and therefore I believe God created many things, but I also believe that he could not have done it all.
I would not have studied evolution if it wouldn't have been for sophomore biology. My teacher was really into evolution and I feel she may have pushed it more than she should have. I am interested in hearing more in depth reasons on both though. Good Luck
i believe that creationism and evolution can co-exist... the sun was not created until later on, therefore the first several "days" could have been zillions of years long... there was no sun yet so how could they gague the days? its a mystery.
Posted by: =The Pata= at October 19, 2004 12:03 PMWow..this topic is such a debated topic, it seems like you have a lot of work ahead of you!! Its interesting to see how different people view this topic (there are such diverse opinions, and some of them are very strange to me). I haven't looked into this topic very deeply, but I have to say that my opinion is shaped by my religious values (and this opinion is very different from many people's)..I believe that God created everything, and "evolution" is a theory that I don't agree with. I have to admit that it would be extremely difficult (or should I say almost impossible) for anyone to change my opinion on this topic. I guess you could say I have a very strong view of the matter, and even though I believe in creationism and not evolution, I also believe that everyone has the freedom to think what they want, to believe differently than me, or to have a different opinion than mine.
Posted by: Alia at October 19, 2004 05:52 PMFirst, I am totally not a religious person. Second, I am Muslim, and I don't think that Islam says that Allah made it all happen. Anyway, I believe in scientific processes rather than religious beliefs.
Posted by: Olzhas Toleu at October 19, 2004 06:20 PMAfter reading my comment to this blog post, i realized that I had not made my opinion clear at all..so let me explain a little more: There are some theories of evolution that say that humans evolved from apes (Darwin). Theories like these are theories that I do not believe in. On the other hand, some creationists claim that the world has always been this way, that nothing has changed. This kind of creationist theories are ones that I also don't believe in.
To be even more specific, I believe that God created the world, and that God created different beings for different times (like the dinosaurs, then humans). I believe in scientific processes, but I do not however believe that humans evolved from apes (or any similar theories). Islam encourages the pursuit of science, and therefore I do not agree with creationists that claim the world has always been this way and that nothing has changed, and that science has nothing to do with anything!. Things evolve, but in my belief this evolution is God's will, and I disagree with people who say that God has no hand in evolution.
I hope this comment makes sense, and if it doesn't I hope it at least is more clarifying than my previous comment.
P.S. Olzhas- I think you need to research your claim that "I don't think Islam says that Allah made it all happen". A suggestion: when you say you are totally not a religious person, it is kind of strange that you go on to claim that you don't think Islam says this or that. It affects your ethos (!) when u say that you are not religious, but you state a claim about that religion anywayz!
I can safely say that I am religious, and that I know what Islam has said about this matter because I have grown up in a religious family that stresses the teachings of Islam, and one teaching in Islam is that Allah is The Creator. You can question me on the matter that Islam says that Allah is The Creator, and I will certainly provide you with an explanation, supported by solid evidence. I look deeply into the teachings of Islam because I care greatly about my religion, so when I read your comment with your claim contradicted by the fact that you say you are not a religious person, i felt it necessary to question you. If you would like to discuss this with me further that would be great (though I don't think it would be the best idea to carry on here on Romisha's blog post!!!)
Romisha - I am sorry that I kind of drifted from commenting on your topic to replying to Olzhas' comment...I apologize!! Please forgive me if I you feel that I have used your blog post wrongly.
I think it is important for someone to have his or her own beliefs but somewhere along the line they have to learn about it from someone, so the easiest way would be in school. I think all sides should be presented though so that he or she can decide for his or herself. great topic, very interesting. gl
