This is sort of a reply to Alia's entry. I also agree with Alia in that I also believe that writing these research papers is beneficial to us. It's always great to be able to pick your own topic, one you're interested in, and then find out everything you can on it. I for one chose the death of coral reefs. I went to an imax movie on coral reefs 2 summers ago at the science musuem and I thought it was going to be the most boring movie ever! But it actually turned out to be one of the most interesting imax movies I've seen yet. I've always been interested in marine biology, but never for a second considered researching the coral reef aspect. But here I am and I'm enjoying learning about the whole complex ecosystems of coral reefs and am increasingly concerned about their conservation. Anyone else interested in this topic? Or anything interesting to add? I'd love to hear anyone's comments.
Hey there Shelly! I think your topic sounds very interesting! I have always been amazed at the wonders of coral reefs; the colors, the animals, everything...
The most interesting thing though is the fact that corals are actually animals!! That's so awesome...I just couldn't believe it (they always looked like colorful rocks to me, not animals!). I also saw an IMAX movie at the science museum, and it showed how pollution and stuff was really harming the coral reefs off the coast of Australia (the Great Barrier Reef)..it was so sad to see the once vibrant and lively reefs dead and barren. I really hope to benefit from your paper, and to learn more about the wonders of coral reefs. I guess I don't know a whole lot about them, and I am always looking for the chance to learn something new! I don't know if this post will help you at all, but at least you know that one person in the class is interested in your topic! Good Luck with your researching....
Hey there! i think that coral reefs are really exciting as well! in fact, i myself was considering going into the marine biology field. (i dont know what happened with that though). but anyways, i think it is a great topic to research, because the coral reefs are continuously being destroyed, from pollution or just careless humans. and it takes so freaking long for them to grow too! its amazing how long! so you can guess that i know a little bit about the topic, but definetely not nearly as much as i would like to know.. so hopefully your paper will be awesome! im looking forward to reading it!
Posted by: Janelle at October 22, 2004 12:01 AMWell it's kind of funny because I was sort of planning on doing my paper on the affects of global warming on coral reefs. I work at a saltwater fish store that sells marine invertebrates (some from the ocean, yes) and many that are grown in captivity - and I'm kind of an aquarium nerd of sorts - but I don't want to overlap too much with your topic because I don't want us to be covering the same thing and stepping on each others toes so maybe I could change mine a little. What do you think?
Posted by: Josh at October 22, 2004 01:58 PMJust so you both know, it's okay with me if you do the same topic. Josh, I don't want you (or anyone else) to completely change topics now that you've done the prospectus, like to do something totally different, but if you want to approach the subject of coral reefs differently, that's fine. Don't feel like you have to, though.
