Traumatizing Halloween

Hey everyone! Happy Halloween weekend! When Clancy introduced the blog post topics for the week, I was immediately drawn to the memorable Halloween, because one Halloween stood out in my memory for all the wrong reasons! Here goes... I was 8 years old... the Halloween of 1996 I believe and there was a massive snow blizzard right before Halloween. We're talking no plows able to get in the streets and trudging thru 5 feet of snow to get from door to door. I was in love with the Little Mermaid at the time (not to mention it is still my fave Disney movie today) so I begged my mom to make me a mermaid costume. She worked super hard on it and even went as far as sewing little gold seashell charms on the costume and the whole works! It was phenomenal and my childhood Halloween dream come true! I was so excited to show it off to all my friends in the neighborhood... until I woke up to a neighborhood of white! I decided that it wasn't even an option to skip trick-or-treating (mind you I wasn't the skinniest child at this age...) and I HAD to wear my mermaid costume. So mom and dad bundle me up in my snowsuit (yes snowpants with suspenders and all) and then we proceeded to put my mermaid costume over it all. Well, the little mermaid must've discovered ice-cream that year cuz the costume was quite plump over my snowsuit. It was like the little boy on A Christmas Story that is so bundled up he 'can't put his arms down'. If you haven't seen that movie I have no idea how you've avoided it all these years, but just turn on any channel during Christmas time... I guarantee it'll be on! Anyways... as I trick-or-treated and proudly displayed my mermaid costume to all the other trick-or-treaters... I ran into some depressing situations. You know when you go up to a door and before they give you candy they either ask or try to guess what your costume is? Well, this was an issue for me since I was faced with things like, "Oh cute! She's a fish!" or "Are you a doll?" or "Um... creative costume" (cuz they couldn't figure out what it was) Nobody could tell with my massive layers under the costume that it was really a gorgeous hand-made Little Mermaid outfit. I will never forget that Halloween, not only because of the snow storm, but the traumatization of the "un-known" costume ordeal. Just to let you all know, I'm really not upset about this anymore, and I've gotten over it! Don't want you to think I have serious issues about it still or something! Hope you all have an awesome Halloween weekend free of costume misunderstandings!! See you Friday! ~Courtney

Hey Courtney!
I remember that blizzard. Well sort of. The only thing I remember is having my picture taken outside on our steps with a TON of snow behind me. I can't even remember if I went trick-or-treating that year. I am sure I did, because I can't remember missing on. You story was cute. It shows real creativeness and persiverance. Little Mermaid is one of a kind. It was fun reading your story. Sorry noone could tell whho you were because your costume sounded gorgeous!

Loooooool !! Your story was really cute! I am trying to imagine someone dressed up in a little mermaid suit ON TOP of the bulk of a snowsuit!! (Im not doing a good job of imagining though!) ..but I have to say you were brave to do that. I mean, not many people would allow themselves to go out dressed up in a snowsuit AND a little mermaid costume! Anywayz cute story!
