Nomy Lamm's essay

Hey everyone, I just read the "It's a Big Fat Revolution" essay and I would characterizer her style and tone as straight forward. She seems to say exactly what she feels and doesn't really care the manor that it is said in. I think it is rhetorically effective because it is different and interesting. It's nice to read something away from typical informative essays. The article kept me interested but I guess that could also be because I have interest in obesity and have been researching and writing about the topic haha I think there is "fat hating" that happens in society. I guess I was particularly interested in the ways that being fat affects Lamm's life. She talks about how she feels like she should look but now finds that she is happy being her overweight self. But I feel like she thinks about it a lot and it does have negative affects on her life. I think this because of what she writes about all of the things that go through her mind. For example she says "but occasionally, when I look in the mirror and i see this body that is so different from my friends', so different from what i'm told it should be, i just want to hide away and not deal with it anymore". I think from the way society is, it is really hard to not have negative thoughts about your body if you are overweight or obese. I think it is great if she feels happy about her body and can overcome these ideas that society has of a perfect body but I am not sure if she can keep all of the negative thoughts about being overweight out of her head. I liked her straight forward type of writing, she gets her points across and lets you take them or leave them. It was interesting to read. I might have to comment more on this essay when I have more time. Anyways, see you in class tomorrow!
