Cartoons in College

In all honesty, my initial response to watching the Simpson's episode "Citizen Kang" was "Wow...watching cartoons in college...this is great!" Then when I realized it had a purpose other than entertainment... I paid a little closer attention. I feel the arguments in the film were presented quite creatively. Although the film was sarcastic and humorous... I feel they portrayed elements of the real-life election and the way society reacts to it all quite effectively. Being so blunt as to say "Abortions for all.... (audience booos)" then switch to "Abortions for none.... (audience booos)" and conclude with "Abortions for some... little American flags for others.... (audience cheers)" really struck me as a realitization of how society reacts to the candidates in Presidential campaigns. This is a perfect example of the bandwagon jumpers and careless political supporters that we see so often in today's pool of voters. I think the argument being made by this film is not necessarily an "argument" rather a display of certain truths in today' society. I feel the sarcastic tone of the film was intended to show us how pathetic we can sometimes be during the time of an election. I feel "Citizen Kang" communicates more effectively to the youthful population who are so dependent of visual media such as television and internet, because we tend to engage more in visual means of communication and learn better from them. I feel this film was a great new tool for teaching and a bit of a relief to us college students who spend most of our learning time staring at millions of tiny black-and-white words in a textbook.
