Yes, racism does exist even in today's society. What I mean about this is that I was watching tv today and right after the Kerry and Bush debate the news came on. It had got to the point where it started talking about where this couple had got married. That's not just the thing to the subject. The thing is that an White American woman had got married to an African American man and at there wedding they had got some racial slurs in their guest book. In the guest book the people had use the term "milk chocalate" and "nigger" to describe the black man. I just don't understand why is the word racism in people's mind and in the dictionary. Really to me I think we don't even need that word in our heads as far as thinking of the color of a person. I mean, who cares who marry who if a man loves a women than why should it be some type of hate circling around that. WE should treat every color as one. The word racism means hate to me when you refer it to color of people.
The thing I am trting to get across is why should a person be judge by the way they look.
I was just laughing about something that happened last week. I was on east bank near the mall area. You know how everyone is talking about the poeple passing out the bible is every where and how it is funny. Well, that's nothing compared to what I seen last Monday. There is this guy that come around on the eastbank talking about how everybody is going to hell. It was so funny because he got to saying a lot of stuff. One thing he said was "All homosexuals and everybody that drink and smoke is going to hell. Everyone that was around was laughing and making fun of him. The thing I am trying to say is the man was saying how everyone is going to hell because they sinned, but he don't know if anyone ask for forgiveness. In the bible it say's once you are born you come into the world as a sinner. The thing that you can do is confess and beleive in your heart and ask God for forgiveness. Once you do that then that's when you try to follow by his word little by little.
What made it so funny was the man said all that about how everyone that sin should go to hell and turn around and say you should vote for George Bush for president. That is no way to try to get a president in office.
The week before that, I saw the man in the newspaper for saying that all Jews should go to hell.It had in the news
I watched the Flash Movie on factory farming. I think this is an argument because it is showing one view on factory farming...when there can be many different views. The claim that the people who made this were trying to make, is that factory farming is an awful thing. The creators of The Meatrix use plenty of pathos throughout the movie. I think the first example was showing the pigs all lined up in miniature cages and then noting that the pigs can’t turn around, don‘t see sunlight, get fresh air, and some don‘t even touch the ground. Then, they talk about how the animals are in such close places that they try to destroy each other. So they show how factory farms prevent this by debeaking chickens, preventing them from pecking each other to death. The patho comes in visually and while they explain what happens. They actually show the cartoon chickens and pigs in these poor conditions. I think this adds to the audience emotion. This is a very effective way of making a good argument. It’s simpler to understand then some lengthy boring article. It’s quick and gets the points across easily, and it is just as credible as any article is., in a more creative and in my opinion, affective way of getting the point across to people. Do you guys think it is a more affective way of presenting an argument....I’d be surprised to hear from someone who doesn’t think it is more affective.
I don't want to be too off topic but lately with the whole war and election it just seems like 18 being the age of adulthood, drinking at 21 ... somthing is wrong. In my opinion, if the Government tells you that age 18 you are an adult, you are responsible for all of your own actions and can be prosecuted to the fullest exten of the law in the court room, you can die for your country in war, and vote for your president - but you have to wait 3 years before you're capable of chosing whether or not you want to drink alcohol? To me it says that Government doesn't truly consider you an adult until you're 21, and if that's the case they're sending adolescents off to war and to the voting polls. I'm sure a lot of people say drinking and driving is a huge reason the drinking age is where it is at but on the flip side though you have a lot of people who are 18 and out of high school but they can't go to a bar to hang-out and they don't want to be with the high schoolers at their clubs, necessarilly, so where do they go? I think that a lot of the problems with raves and clubs where ecstacy and other club-drugs are used might be attributed to the fact it's because they're not old enough to go to a bar. What does everyone else think?
I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal with the bible passings? Everyday you have people coming up to you giving you flyers to join their club, or restaurants to come to. Now, you don't have to take the flyer, and you don't have to join the club or go to the restaurant. I don't know why the bible passing should be any different. I'm not sure about what experiences people have had with these bible givers, but for me I was politely asked if I wanted one. Whether people accepted or declined, they were not attacked, from what I saw. It was a little funny how they were less than 20 feet apart from each other, but for me it wasn't a big deal. A lot of people have said that they shouldn't be doing this, but I think they have every right to. Seeing that this is America we have freedoms to do this kind of stuff. You didn't have to accept it, and they weren't shoving it in your pockets so no harm was done. For me, just because I'm not affiliated with something, it doesn't mean that I have to be negative towards it.
I think the people handing out the bibles think they have found a great way to reach students. They know that this is a place that they can pass out bibles to tons and tons of people in a short amount of time. I think one thing they don't understand is that a lot of people don't want to accept the bible when they are walking to classes. If people do accept the bibles on their way to class they most likely throw it away or leave it in there backpack where it doesn't do any good. If these people want to be successful with reaching students, i personally think they need to do it a different way. They could sit at a stand with some signs about what they are promoting...that way if people are interested they can find out information on their own. Rather than shoving bibles in peoples faces saying "here this is what you should believe". I dunno, maybe it has worked to reach some people on campus but from what I observe they aren't reaching many.
Hope everyones article analysis assignment is going well! See everyone Friday:)
I actually went to the website and read the article about the factory farming. A friend of mine went to this seminar two nights ago about the whole factory farming thing and she was converted into a vegetarian after she watched a movie about the whole thing. She came back and was very excited to try to convert me too. It is very very sad to think of how they treat the animals especially the de-beaking of the chickens just so they don't peck eachother apart. They throw the weak animals in a pile where they can't do anything to save themselves because they are in such poor conditions. I don't believe that farmers should be that selfish just to make more money. Especially when it affects the animals like it does. Animals don't deserve to be treated badly, even more so because they are helpless and haven't done anything wrong to deserve it. I also have the other side of the spectrum because my dad came from a farm. They raised their own animals and also butchered the animals themselves. So I am totally all about family farms because I know that they don't treat their animals badly. I don't think that I'm going to convert to be a vegetarian, but it's definitely something to be concerned about. SOrry if this blog is totally random and confusing... I'm currently trying to watch Laguna Beach, my new favorite show! See you all in class on Friday!!
Why is it that because i am wearing a du rag or a backwards hat people think that i am going to try to rob them. Or if i say hi to a young lady she doesnt want to look at my face and jus keeps walking not saying anything. Can anyone tell me y? And y is it that when i am the only person with his hand raised after the teacher asks a question y do i have to be having a problem knowing the answer and not just know the answer. Y is it that when i ask to borrow something i always hear make sure u bring it back i know how "u" guys work. Y is it that when im at a movie theatre and sit next to u i hear u move ur purse closer to u or put ur hand in ur pocket to check to see if ur wallet is there. Y is it that after all the years slavery has been over we still aint equal???????? Can anyone tell me Y???????
Even though it might be upsetting to some people that men were out
yesterday passing out bibles we still do live in a world of free speech.
You can not be crucified for your beleif anymore, what you feel is what you
feel. now when strat shoving things down peoples throats that is when it stop.
But all in all, those men had a right to pass out those Bibles just as you had the right to reject them.
I don't think it is right for people that are religious to come to places such as our camppus and give us the little Bible books since not many of us want them. Myself, I am not religious, and I am a Muslim. First of all, if I wanted to have a Bible, I would consider converting myself to christianity, and even if I didn't convert myself, I would just order one from other place besides some people I don't know on the street. The idea of having a stand and waiting for people to come by and take their own copy is more appealng to me thatn having walk through a group of radical religious people. I think that the disrtibution of such material should be organzed at other places than a such divredse campus.
ok - so i know that i havent written on the specific given blog topics but i do think this one is nessessary to "blog" about...? so today, as always i woke up late and rushed out the door. i was immediately pummled and attacked... well maybe attacted isnt the write word, but i dont know what is right now. So i was approached by AT LEAST 6 different people, both on the minneapolis campus and the st. paul campus, shoving pocket-sized bibles in my face. now, they people who were the distributors as well as everyone else, knows that not EVERYONE wants a bible... because that is just common sense. personally, i am jewish so i felt no need to take a bible. i think it would have been A LOT more appropriate if there were small stands where the distributors stood, allowing people to come and get one if they wanted. Because of the fact that not everyone on campus believes in the same thing, it shouldnt be as publicized and forced as i witnessed today. im not offended or going to protest this or anything... TRUST ME, i just think it would be a little more professional to have the students approach the bible givers if they feel necessary.
I just wanted to say that I find the presidential debate to be pretty annoying. All of the ad's between the candidates are bashing each other. I think it is immature and stupid that they bash each other like that when it is suppose to be a serious campaign and people are suppose to take it seriously. Also, like a lot of people in class, I'm not sure who I am going to vote for. I don't even think I'm registered yet. I also read both of the speeches Bush and Kerry gave. I found it hard to concentrate on the things they wanted to do with next four years because a lot of it had to do with them saying what the other candidate would do bad for the next four years. It just really turns me off when they point fingers and try to show why the other candidate is so bad. I like both of the candidates and if one of them never bashed the other candidate I would probably vote for that one. I dunno, hopefully I'll be able to find a better reason to vote for one of them by November 2nd and hopefully I'll register soon! Talk to you all later!

About the whole issue of the farm raising of animals concerns me very much. I don't think that US or any other country should practice using different methods of raising the animals since I think that it should be classified as animal abuse. In the coutry where I am from, (Kazakhstan) we don't use these technological methoda for two reasons: first, Kazakhstan doesn't have enough money to support such a program; second, my culture doesn't accept meat or any other product that has been modified in any way. Amidst of all of the environmental discussions, seminars, and protests, some of us might wonder: "Where is the Greenpeace and the "Love of Animals" types of groups???" While the experts and Ph.D nerds are running around in the forests of Argentina and Brazil, trying to convince the local executives of "no deforestation" problem, in their own country, the US the GM and the Agro-Cultural companies are terrorizing livestock and their people with cruelty and indiferrence to humankind. I think there is no end to these sort of tests of agricultural and animal fields. The only thing we can hope for is that it doesn't have any long-term disadvantages or health problems.
Could anyone explain to me how the handle long-term assingments? I am not used to getting an assingment at the beginning of the semester and it isn't even due until the last day of the semester. In high school I would always be asking to get a head start on assingments since the classes moved so slowly...I know, I am a dork. I just cannot stand wasting my time when. So I feel like when I am in school....I misewell use all of that time to its best advantage, so I don't have to worry about stuff too much at home.
The thing is I have a paper I am doing for another class and I feel like I am getting nothing accomplished because it is taking so long to put together. I have the hardest time with this. I feel like I am procrastinating, which is not like me. If you learn anything about me this semester, it is that I like to get things done right away. So is it worth it to say I am going to work on this paper at least 2 hours a week? I would like to have it done about a week before the actual due date. How do you guys handle this stuff? Let me know your suggestions. Thanks!
Bush and Kerry are running for office for presidency, I feel that Bush and kerry are just the lesser of two evils both fighting for a position inflict their conflicting arguments on the nation. I personally don't agree with their comments. they are preaching something that they are not actually living. writers are the only
thing that seperates their lips from ours. I feel that they are to preachy about
there situation and try to bask on something and ride it until the wheels falls off
they don't even have thought of their own.
I do not like politics. In fact, I am anti-government. Throughout the duration of this post, think of me as "Anarchist Pata." I often find myself asking the same question that Pink Floyd asks in their famous album, The Wall. "Mother should I trust the government?" The answer is no. To be quite frank, I have more opinions on toothpaste and Febreze... which is why I chose to write about those issues instead of this one. My feelings towards my toothpaste and Febreze have more of an effect on me than the presidential candidates. Presidents tend to buckle in extreme situations and do not always do as they say they will (they're humans, just like all of us). I believe in three things....1) a God 2) karma and 3) fate. One of these three things will take care of me, and I choose not to obsess over political issues.
Okay everyone here is some fun.
I am opening this up to full debate. Since I know basically nothing about our candidates, and what they stand for, I would really like to get in the know. I am sick of all this talk about the election and I have NOTHING to say or comment on. (Don't worry, I won't be able to vote for another four years).
Can anyone who is pro Bush tell me why, and what his stands are, and Can someone who is Pro Kerry tell me the same. Please be honest with your opinions. I just want to know where each stands and on what.
Taking political science is hard without knowledge of politics. Yes I don't want to get into it too much, but I want to know the basics.
I am very embarrassed to admit that I don't know anything about politics, let alone our candidates running for office, but I guess i feel comfortable asking you guys, my classmates, for advice. In the process of your comments, please try not to bash the other candidate. I can't vote anyways, so your most likely not going to get me to go to one side anyways. It is too close to the election to decide. I would have needed to been following this for quite sometime before i could choose the candidate I believe to be best. Well Thanks again, and please help!
Hi. as most people know I am a PSEO student at the U and it is my senior year. I am in the process of applying to colleges, and I was just wondering if I could get anyone's input on how they found the right college for them. I am applying to many colleges in Florida and just a few here, in MN. I tend to like a smaller school because I hate being a number. So far this year, I haven't had as hard a time as I thought I was going to have going to a LARGE school. It is actually working out very well.
I love to tour different colleges. It is a hobby of mine and I can't leave a campus without getting a certain atire before leaving. Werid hobby, I know. But that is what I collect, attire from colleges.
Anyways....How do you guys choose the U of M? What were the main things you looked for in the right college? How many of you would highly reccomend my applying here next year? How is it as a college. Does it give off the right experience of college life? Does anyone have any other suggestions of colleges you had in mind that you also recommend. Let me know because I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this. I just want this application, choosing school stuff to be over with. That's why i am doing early addmissions for schools.
Thanks!
I know you all are going to feel me on this. What your boy king james is posting about today is that awkward silence that comes at the end of every phone conversation. You know when you are talking to a friend or someone on the phone and all of a sudden you got to go and you let your friend know "Well I got to go" then your friend goes "Aight" then you say "Aight then" then your friend says "Aight" and this secondary conversation continues for at least five or six more minutes, but it feels like a hour and finally, one of you just hangs up. What's up with that?! Does anyone see what I'm saying? HOLLATCHABOUGH!!!
I really like college life so far, i dont have anyone to yell at me and tell me what to do all the time. I dont really miss being at home at all because all i had to do there towards the end of the summer was work and that was about it because all of my freinds were leaving for school and my two best friends went into the armed forces at the beginning of the summer so there wasnt a whole lot to do around home anymore so i am really happy that i am in college because i would get bored at home. It would be awesome if we could just have the whole college life experience without the classes but that is what we are here for and i think after a while it would get boring if it wasnt for the classes because i would run out of things to do.
Bars are a fun place to hang out even if you are not 21 years old some bars will let you be in there as long as you dont drink there. My freind and I went to a bar the other night and played darts for a while, it gave us something to do. I dont think that the owners of most bars would have a problem with minors being in there as long as they arent getting served. There is always a lot of cool people to talk to at bars to. That is all i have to say about bars.
Football is a good sports. I am watching the Colts vs. Packers game right now on TV and the colts are winning 28-17 in the 2nd quarter with 7 minutes left. I went to the Gophers game yesterday and we were winning 33-10 when i left at the end of the 2nd quarter. I played football in High school i didnt get to play much though but it was still fun to be part of the team. I get to play football on tuesday night for Alpha Gamma Rho the fraternity that i belong to it should be a good time. That is all i have to say about football today.
I hate it when chewing gum loses its flavor quicker than you can throw the wrapper away. I don't chew gum very often because of this. (Well..I also have TMJ but that is not what stops me from chewing gum). (PS- if i DO chew gum i like bubble tape...and i dont bother to unroll a big piece, i just take a big bite out of the spiral). Gum tastes really good for about 5 seconds because is soft enough to blow bubbles, flavorful and fun to wiggle around in your mouth. However, when the taste goes away and it becomes hardened....it is no fun to chew OR blow bubbles (too hard). all i do is get hungry when gum goes bad. My stomach says to me, "PATA STOP TEASING ME." He says this because I fool him by chewing and chewing and chewing and never swallowing. Something else that makes me hungry is my nutrition class, because all we do is talk about food.
Does anyone feel that while you're here time passes by so quickly? Every since I moved in I feel like the entire time I'm here is just one long day. I never have enough time to get everything done, and i just wish that there were at least four more hours in a day. I am so excited for the weekend just to be able to relax because during the week I'm under constant pressure.
Just to comment on the whole reality TV thing... I agree to a certain extent. I'm not going to talk bad about the bachelor because I am way into that show, but I will talk about the Real World. How bad has that gotten! It seems like the only way you can get onto that show now a days is if you're willing to have sex on camera. I don't know, but I'm totally not into that, which is sad because I used to love watching that show. To comment about the whole sex in the school thing also.. I think that condoms should be available at school. I dont' really think it's promoting sex as much as it's promoting safe sex. I know people that have gone to get condoms at places such as Planned Parenthood because they don't feel right buying condoms. It's better for them to get them free from a place like school then to not use them at all. I think that's all for now because I don't really have much else to say.. see you in class!
Well first of all, was I the only one who noticed how much shorter Kerry's speech was than Bush's?? Not that it matters but Bush sure does like to talk! He he! Now that I'm finally done reading them, I'd like to consider the pros and cons I felt from each speech. As of right now, I do not know exactly who I am in support of so I feel I am at an advantage for comparing without including bias opinions. The thing that stood out the most from Bush's speech that I was not a big fan of what his constant use of the phrase "There is still work to be done..." He's had FOUR years to get work done and it's hard for me to believe that with FOUR more years, he'll accomplish so much more. Kerry's speech seemed to lack personal support for his campaign and focused alot on the negative about his 'competition'. I'm not too keen on the whole "bash the other candidate" approach as you may have noticed in my first blog on this topic, so that was a bit disappointing, whereas Bush discussed alot of his projected campaign reforms and was able to refrain from bashing Kerry in every paragraph. I am bothered by the differing numbers and factual information regarding current unemployment levels, availability of Medicare, etc. Bush makes it seem as though his presidency has caused great improvements in these areas where Kerry's numbers show that there was actually a downfall in these areas during Bush's presidency. I feel even though the information presented by each candidate is coming from the source first-hand, there are still many biases present which makes it difficult for a student like me to decide who to support. Will I ever be able to decide... hopefully before November 2nd!!
Hey there! First of all I'd like to say that I really enjoyed Eisner's article 'Taking Back the Youth Vote'. I think more people ought to recognize the importance of getting the youth of today into the polls. I was shocked at the decreasing numbers in voters of our age bracket. I feel like it is up to us to change those numbers so that we are recorded in history for bringing back high youth voter percentages. How cool would that be? We could be remembered for this if we can get more young adults out there to vote! I'm not sure how all of you felt about the article but I think it was kind of motivational to me personally. I think we take for granted the privelage of voting as we tend to forget that 18-year-olds, women, and blacks were not always allowed to vote. I feel we owe it to the many that lived before us who fought and devoted their entire lives to gaining this incredible right to get out there and vote in the upcoming election. I know I was held back a little because I didn't want to jump on the bandwagon and just vote to say that I voted. But if you think about it, this bandwagon is so worth jumping on! However, I do support the idea of doing a little research so you feel confident in your decision to choose a specific candidate. It is not necessary to turn into a preacher on your political preferences and push your views onto other people but I feel it is necessary to take a stand in what you believe in. There is a good quote I know that could relate to this issue. It goes like this "If you fail to stand for something, you will fall for anything" Think about that for a minute. It really is true for alot of things in life. I think we need to stand up for what we believe in and make a difference, and this election allows us the opportunity to do just that!
Do you guys remember that one day in class that we were talking about schools distributing condoms to kids? Well, i was sitting here trying to think of something to blog about and that just randomly popped into my head. So do you think that it is a smart idea for schools to do that or do you think they are just promoting sex? Personally, i think that it is a good idea for schools to provide condoms for students that want them. I think this is a good idea because teenagers are going to do what they want (they have that sort of attitude) if they are protected or not and i think by atleast having that option available to them is a good thing. I am sure that it might make them think that the school is promoting it and it is possible that maybe some teens that werent think about it before might experiment but atleast they are using protecting and the students that were going to anyways have the option too. They should have some extra sex education that goes along with the condoms tho, like if they decide to distribute them they should have short classes on it once a year, just something to let them know more about sex and other birth control options. So what do u think?
Is it just me or has reality TV just gone too far? I was watching TV last night and the bachelor came on. The girls in it were so over the top that it was unrealistic, and it was over dramatic. I have a hard time believing that people still find this interesting because the more you are exposed to something the less impact you have from it. Seems to me that each show has to out do the next any way possible. Some of the shows aren't as bad as others but, watching that show last night made me wonder, Survivor 20, Big Brother 100, I mean where will it end?
i don't know about anyone else in the class but, i go through these stages of listening to a whole cd from beginning to end over and over again. the past three weeks it has been the first third eye blind cd. it is the one with semi-charmed kind of life, jumper and how's going to be on it. i don't know if anyone else owns it but it is a wonderful cd for anyone who likes music that is a rock/altermative/pop mix.
if you own it, take the time to listen to songs 11 through 14. i love the whole cd but that sequence of 4 songs really rocks. 11 and 13 are the best.
it's funny because this cd is so awesome but none of the other third eye blind cds are as good. actually i don't like them very much at all. they have like 2 or 3 good songs on them and that's it.
anyway its time to go and study for another wonderful test so i'll sever my fingers from the keyboard, taking my cd player so i can go study.
In response to the prompt for the week ... there's so much that could be said about politics and the candidates, the whole election process and the state of the Country in general. What effects me most is the notion of how everyone picks a side and squares off against the opposing side. It's a sad tribute to human nature in that regard. Personally, I think politics are really all a bunch of acts, what people say and do doesn't necessarilly reflect what they truly believe and what they'll do down the road [in politics], it's usually an attempt to win approval, keep peace, or avoid criticisms. However, to dismiss the election saying 'oh well,' it's a bunch of crap, the world is messed up is a lazy way-out. People need to discover what they really believe and look at the candidates both open mindedly, not looking at political parties, and analyze the candidates for judge of character: sincerity, virtue, etc... and look at knowledge, competency, and experience. Ultimately, it's all about picking the lesser of two evils. There are lots of problems in the world and not one solution, but to quit trying to make sense of what's going on in the world around us is just pathetic. It's easier not to care.
Hello! In response to the article about studying... I have the most difficult time studying also!! Biology is an especially hard subject for me to ready about, mostly because it's a lot of review from the stuffy I did last year. Also I'm taking a Greek and Roman Mythology class and I don't understand! So if anyone is taking that class and they'd like to be my tutor then they should let me know!! I could really use that. As far as the whole political debate goes back to... I think that the reason they are pressing so many people to vote is because both of the canidates this year are up in the air and they are afraid that no one likes either candidate so no one is going to vote. I guess that's just my opinion on the situation but anyway! Well I'm going to go watch Office Space so I'll see you all on Friday!
I don't know if anyone else has been having trouble studying like me, but I just can never get to it. Especially with my biology class and all the reading! I'm busy enough as it is with other classes! Is it really necessary to read like 50 pages a day. Besides that I can never concentrate, it goes through one ear and out the other. I just got myself to read the summaries and look at the pictures, and I actually did great on the first major quiz.

I think this election is one of the most intense elections that I have ever witnessed. Everyday I here about it, and it pops up in the most unexpected places. Even in the summer when I was watching the VMA's, it turned into this whole political thing. For me I haven't been following it as closely as I should, and I know it's important. I just want to know what I will gain and lose from each candidate (Bush and Kerry). Sometimes people say things to make themselves look good, but do another thing later. So for me I'm really looking for someone who I think is genuine. And with the war still going on, I'm looking for someone to end it and keep us safe.
~Michelle~
to answer the questions asked of me. i've been following the election as closely as i can with out getting myself to caught up in all the mudslinging. the article about youth voting hit it's strong point when it properly stated that youth vote in lower numbers then adults and when it explained the history of youth voting. other than that nothing stands out in my head. i was rather annoyed by the article. i don't want a party to be thrown when i vote. i believe that we don't vote for a number of reasons. one of them being that we don't really recieve education on it like our grandparents did. but that is not nearly as big of a reason as the way politics are run now adays. the democrats and republicans run everything. this was not how our political system began and is not an ideal state for it. instead of working towards compromise, the democrats and republics fight and fight some more. if you ask me we need more people like john mccann. all the crap, mudslinging and lieing make me not want to vote!!!
i know that we, as an age group don't turn out to vote in very high numbers. i'll be voting in nov. because it's my civic duty and i know how lucky i am to have the chance to vote even if the canidates suck!! i think that if we as an age group had the time and knowledge we could easily change and make a difference in politics in this country. any other thoughts?
I think that it is very comical that people believe John Kerry is a "wishy washy" candidate. People say that he can't make up his mind when it comes to decision making, but it reality it is Bush who has the problem.
In Bushes address to Ohio, he made it very clear that doctors and patients should have a choice.
He states, "In all we do to improve health care in America, we will make sure the health decisions are made by doctors and patients, not by Washington, D.C. bureaucrats."
Well the reason that I find this hilarious is because he is also prolife. He is one of the people that want to make abortion illegal. If a bill was ever passed like this and made into law, it would be the bureaucrats who are telling doctors and patients what the cannot do. What decision would there be? To not have an abortion or to not have an abortion.
Basically my point is that Kerry isn't the only one who can't make up his mind. I'm not totally against Bush, because surprisingly he gets the job done. I don't agree with him and my vote will probably go somewhere else. And if Bush wins this election then he probably cheated again.
Hi! Does anyone besides me need to much on something or at least be drinking something when it comes to studying and/or reading? This is really vague, I know but I have heard at least a dozen people in the last couple hours say that they couldn't study without something to eat or drink right next to them.
Is there some scientific link to this? If anyone knows anything, please let me know because I am interested. Does eating or drinking keep our brains alivee when we study or what? Does it provide a constant movement to kep us awakw and on track? Sorry for this, I know it is pointless but I just thought I would bring it up. Can anyone actually study in the dorms? I don't live on campus, and I was just wondering if it is hard with all the distractions? I find many plasses at the U to study and I can get work done, but I think in a dorm I would have a little more trouble concentrating. well Have to go to class. See everyone soon!
To be totally honest with you.. I'm not much for politics. A friend of mine, who is super into politics, told me that I shouldn't vote because if I did it would be specifically just to vote which I shoudl do because then the wrong person will win. If I were to vote, I'd vote for Bush because he's Republican and I was brought up in a very Republican way. Also... Kerry seems so much more fake. Just from the commercials I've seen. I know those probably aren't the best things to rely on, but that's what I see! Well anyhow, i'm actually off to this class right now so i better get going so that I can catch the bus! See you all shortly!
Hello again. i just had this flash about a topic that is important to talk about. the right of the government (or some other authority) to censor items like books, television, movies, songs, words. anything that they dont see as 'appropriate' shouldnt be displayed to the public. but i think that we shouldnt really put a censor on things, like words on tv or in songs, because how is the governmnet to judge what is acceptable and what is not? i think it is up to the parents to decide what is acceptable for their child to see/hear, not society. that way, parents can raise their children the way they want, not the way society as a whole recommends. plus, if the government does censor everything, and bans books, how are we as students going to learn about every viewpoint of every issue? i think the banning of books, especially, resrticts learning. so thats that
What up souls, I know the title of this sounds kind of funny, but I'm the type of person who thinks that this magical herb or relaxer should be legalized. In fact I am smoking this herb right now and it is motivating me to write this paper (ha-ha just kidding). Don't think I sound crazy when I say this but this is just the type of person I am. I kind of did some research on this and researchers show that marijuana is extremely useful in treating a variety of conditions including: nausea due to chemotherapy, elevated eye pressure due to glaucoma, and loss of appetite and nausea in AIDS patients. I mean if this herb is good for medicinal uses why is it still illegal. There are some states that have this herb legalized for medicinal purposes. I also researched how the crime rate has dropped in 1992 and how more people are in jail for possession of this herb. It seems to me that the war on crime is working well, but the war on marijuana is the opposite. Marijuana is very beneficial, but because it is illegal, patients either go without it or commit a crime to obtain this medication or magical herb. I think that it should be legalized because more deaths are happening because this magical herb some how got people craving over it. Illegalizing marijuana causes more harm than good. I think that it makes no sense to send people to jail for using this magical herb. There are a large amount of jails being created for people that's in jail for petty stuff. Most of the people in jail are in there for possession of marijuana. So if we make marijuana legal we would lower the cost on taxes. I mean what’s the worst this drug can do. It heals, relax, lower taxes and you can get employment with it. So for all those people that are unemployed this can actually help put out jobs. (I am being funny)
I think it is really important for youth to pay attention to the presidential debates and decide for themselves who they want to be in control of the country. i found a link to this site on one of the listed web pages, and it had several issues that the debates cover. i recommend it to anyone who wants to see how the opposing sides are arguing on different topics. I looked at a few topics, and now i can start developing my own views on those topics, and which party i will vote. but as of yet, i am quite undecided. most of my friends are democratic, except for the few who support bush (along with my parents), and so it is interesting to talk about these topics and see how people my age feel about them. so young people should vote because they have views, and every vote counts.
Alright guys... The Pata has news for all of you. Febreze is the sickest thing ever. My roommate and I had a rather frusterating situation with our air conditioner last week. A bunch of water managed to escape this enchanting machine, and thus a fairly large puddle appeared on our floor. (how wonderful). I loved it when i walked across the room and my socks got all wet. (heavy sarcasm). After a handful of days, an army of mold cells decided to camp out in our puddle. It smelled like something aweful. (You want to know what it smelled like? It smelled just like your clothes do when you put them in the washing machine and forget about them for a long time and they just sit all wet in there. nast.) We filled out a maitenence request form and anxiously awaited the fixing of the AC machine. After days of no sign of a repair person, I revisited the front desk, filled out a new form, and was sure to write "EMERGENCY" in big letters on top. At this point it just sucked to live in that room, so we whipped out the Febreze and attempted to kill the smell. First of all, Febreze doesnt clean anything...you just spray it on something gross and Mr Febreze tries oh so hard to decrease the gross factor. Secondly, whats up with the scents? My roommate purchased "MEADOW RAIN" Febreze. Exactly what does a meadow rain smell like? hmmmm....alright. So then our room smelled like mold mixed with "MEADOW RAIN" and it was gross. On the back of the bottle it says that Febreze "Safely cleans odors from fabrics, leaving the clean feeling of after the rain reshness"....what the heck?!!! after it rains, it always smells like worms, not Febreze....if you ask me, they're really milking the effects of this product. Thirdly (and not finally....but im sick of writing about Febreze) It reminded me of when i dated this guy whose mom smoked like 8 zillion packs a day inside their house. Their couch always smelled like Febreze because she thought she was Ms Sneaky Smokey and she assumed that she made the couch smell all pretty and not smokey and it was so gross. (except i think it was a different scent....perhaps "DUSKY DEW" or something lame along those lines!!!!!!!!!!!!) BOO FEBREZE.
ps- Our AC did indeed get fixed and we had the carpet cleaned with a special machine that looked like a giant lawn mower.
What up lords, I know the title of this sounds kind of funny, but I'm the type of person who think that this drug should be legalized. Don't think I sound crazy when I say this but this just the person I am.
Now as I look around this University of minnesota campus I see all different shades of women, with one thing in common, they all got something special and unique about theirselve; even if it is just the slightest twinkle of their eye, or a body thats makes you want just stop and double back around the corner, every one has somthing on this campus.
(NO DISRESPECT TO THE LADIES!!)
but I would like to know from the fellas!!!
what do you think makes a girl stand out above all the others?
Like I always say, BE HONEST!!!!

I found Kerry's speech to be better. A lot of what Bush talks about i cant relate to. Apparently Bush speaks at a sixth grade level and Kerry is just a bit better. Both try to convince you that their way is better. The speeches demonstrate todays negative version of politics where each candidate is trying to undermine the other's authority. Bush interacts more with the audience than Kerrry and gets them roused. The speeches are all bark and no bite. They talk about waht they will do but fail to mention how, only that their way is better than their opponent. I am a democrat so I have a bias against Bush. He says that his tax cuts are helping the economy but they only make it worse. The tax cuts only really help the richest percent of Americans, those who need it least. See you tommorow in class.
I agree, barely anyone votes now it seems. She brings up a good point although i disagree that it is because we have better things to do. This election might change all of that. America is the most partisan divided it has ever been. Who wins the election will matter a lot. Im wondering if anyone is planning on voting and for who?
First of all, im a little upset because i just wrote this entire story once and SoMeHoW it got erased! so i guess the big thing here if you are out late at nite and dont want to walk home or whereever alone, you call 612.624.WALK. So, because its promoted SoO much, i called it on friday nite @ 12aM because i was done with the whole "PaRtY ScEnE" they told me to wait 15 minutes, and an HoUr later, they still hadnt come. So i call back and they tell me its going to be AnOtHeR hour!!! So i begin walking, because WhO in their RiGhT MiNd wait two hours. i could have gotten lost, relost, and been back at my dorm in the time they wanted me to wait to be escorted!!! so anyways, at this point, im a cry baby so im CrYiNg & ScArEd bc i have no Flippin idea where i am! i flag down a UMPD man, and he blew me off and drove away! WhAtS tHe DeAl!!! so the moral of the story is, to make an extremely long story, just long, my dad had to call the head of the UMPD to complain about how rude the officer was! the escort service never came, and i was driven home by the HeAd PoLiCe GuY... in the CoP CaR! what an adventure..... NOT!!
What exactly is this movie about ??? I mean it's pretty obvious that it has something to do with the September 11th attacks, but like who made the movie and what does it focus on?? Also where can I see it ??
After reading the speeches by both Bush and Kerry, I have a few comments to make. First of all, what really seemed to stand out in Kerry's speech was how much he mentioned Iraq. He kept talking about the $200 billion spent in Iraq, but Bush didnt really emphasize on that matter much in his speech. I think Kerry's speech would appeal to a lot more Americans because there are so many people who have lost loved ones in Iraq. There are so many Americans who are suffering from the pain of lost family and friends, and they dont want more Americans to have to suffer too. Kerry's speech might have a greater impact because he is talking about a matter which a lot of people want to hear about: bringing our troops home. While Bush makes great promises about increasing the quality of education in public schools, Kerry seems to focus on the matter concerning Americans most at this time (our troops in Iraq).
What kind of bugged me was how Kerry kept talking about what he would have done when it comes to Iraq. He keeps saying I would have done this, I would have done that. In my opinion, what's past is past and Kerry should emphasize what he will do about Iraq rather than bringing up what's done and past.
Another thing I noticed was that in Bush's speech the audience's reaction is written down like (Applause)..but not in Kerry's. I think that knowing how the audience reacted really affects the way you read the speech. Kerry's speech seemed kind of dull and not very impressive in comparison with Bush's because of the applauses, boos and cheers mentioned in the article on Bush's speech.
I am not sure if this is true for any of you, but I have a friend that is very democratic and just hates Bush. The thing that bothers me is that up until Fahrenheit 9 11 came to the theaters, this person was never actively involved in politcs. Now, he is so pro Kerry that if anyone brings up anything about the war or the election in general he will butcher the subject until you agree with his view point. My problem isn't that he supports Kerry rather that he bases his opinions solely on this movie. He takes what Michael Moore says as pure fact and fails to see the bias. He doesn't research the other side of the poltical argument. I don't care what side he supports so long as he is accurately informed of both sides. Anyone else have an opinion on this?
I read the article by Jane Eisner, and I agree with some things she says...I really liked how she mentioned the fact that the election candidates don't really pay attention to young people's needs. I'm not saying that they should totally target young adults in their campaigns, what I'm saying is that they should at least address some of our concerns. In my opinion, a candidate who talks about increasing university and college scholarships for young people for example would definately appeal to me more than a candidate who ignores young adult's issues.
One thing I didnt agree with is her saying that people should knock on our doors and talk to us personally about voting. I hate having people kncoking on the door, it's pretty annoying and I don't think a lot of people would appreciate constantly having to open the door and stand there listening to someone talk about voting.
The article was pretty good though and it's nice to know that some people actually care about what us young adults think. It's interesting to see that our votes really do make a difference.
Hi everyone. I hope everyone is enjoying this cloudy, sleepy day just as much as I am. Talk about wanting to curl up on a couch and watch a movie. Anyways...that is not what I am going to write about. I have been questioning myself on one specific thing to do with the election for quite sometime. It doesn't necessarily have to do with just the 2004 election, but all the elections in the past and future. I'll get right to it.
I think, or have been comtemplating, that the age limit for voting may be too young. Now I know that when you are 18 you are "offically" an adult. What does that exactly mean. We can make decisions on our own without our parents consent, blah, blah, blah. Are 18 year olds eligible to vote. I ask this just because since the election date is coming very soon, and I think of ome of my peers at my high school, I worry if their vote should really count. I am not saying that their opinion doesn't matter but after speaking with a couple of students who have just turned 18, it worries me how honest they will actually be come election day.
I spoke with two classmates that said they were voting for x because x had a nicer car than y. I personally have never seen x or y's automobiles, but does it really make a difference when it coems to who is going to be running our country?
Another example, I was speaking with someone who said they are very sick of the order of presidents and they want to spice it up a little bit. I guess the complain that the order was Bush, Clinton, Bush so now they want a Kerry thrown in there.
I shake my head wondering what percent of the new "adults" that are legally old enough to vote, actually think this way? I know that not everyone 18 plus thinks as low as that, but does the majority or the peple who do outway the majority of the people who don't? I hope I haven't offended anyone, because that is not my intent. Honestly I haven't met one person at the U of M that makes me question their right to vote. It is just previous people I have encountered that make me worry. I guess it doesn't even have to be new - comers to voting. I am sure there are some elgible people who have the same voting strategies that have been able to vote for years.
I'll get going, but if anyone has anything to say to this, please don't hold back.
Now a days it like lot of kids is using the word love all out of order, or just do not know what it means. now I am a 18yr old male and I feel I know what the word is, I think that I have been love before, ya know always thinking about this person every day wanting this person, and incomplete when you are not
around this person.
Now all of yall out I want you to comment and tell what you think this word is what and what this word means to you?
the only thing I ask is that you be very honest.

To follow up on the question Abby asked in class today on whether or not Ohio is a swing state, I looked it up and it seems that Ohio is not in fact a swing state. The New York Times classifies it as "Leaning Republican." It's a very important part of the rhetorical context of both speeches you're reading this week, so keep that in mind. Also, did you know there's an entire blog devoted to analyzing swing states in the 2004 election? Here it is: Swing State Project.
In our society today you can actually feel the times shifting," as far as the generation gaps between us". It's now time to put the load on our shoulders
and run with it. I am a freshman in college and I feel that my role has shifted from child to responsible individual; More weight has been put on me and love it.
I think most peers my age, even though may fus and fight about it like to be in a situation where they have to fin for their selves. It a growing process that is almost an obligation for a person to go threw in order to contribute to society.
most people our age are look at as being very irresponsible and not goal oriented, I admitt before coming to this school those would have been my thoughts exactly to, but being in this envoirment, you see people who have their whole life plan, people that did not come to college for the parties and the beers but people who came to college for their eduation, and basically people who are trying to make a better life for theirselves
Hey everyone! I was actually just about to go to bed when I remembered that I still need to figure out how to work this whole blog thing. So here I am writing another one tonite before I go to bed! I guess I'll see tomorrow if it works or not. I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was good... except that I can't exactly figure out the whole dorm eating system. I never know when it's going to be open or closed so this weekend I think I only at there two times. It's ok though because I have a lot of food in my room but at the same time it's not good because i'm paying all that money and not getting anything out of it! Plus it's just more money to pay for food like Easy Mac, rice, and whatever else it is that you can make in your dorm room! Well that's about all that I think I have to say for tonite.. see you all in class tomorrow!!
Hey everyone! I wasn't in class Friday so I'm a rookie at this stuff... so bear with me please! My roomate Erin is in our class and she helped me out so I am thankful for that. I think I'd like to discuss politics with all you guys. I personally hate the whole political scheme. I feel so pressured to be active and vote and I definitely want to, but I feel like I need to research more so that I know what I am supporting. I don't know how everyone else feels about this and I apologize if I offend anyone but since the election is coming up I thought it'd be a good topic. I feel that on top of school work and extracurricular activities and everything else in everyday life, there is little time to follow the political campaigns. I would like to know if any of you have been closely following the election lately? If so, let me know what you guys think about who you are in support of and why... I'm curious to see how other students view this issue. Also, it wouldn't hurt to get some information especially from different perspectives. I saw the movie Fahrenheit 911 and was totally apalled by Bush's behavior in certain situations that was depicted in the movie; however, I know that alot of the info. that was portrayed was bias as well so it's tough to decide what position to take. And there are so many crazy political people out there who devote their lives to the election and would do anything to get you to vote for the candidate they are in support of, but how do we know what to think or believe? I think it'd be a better idea for the campaigns to focus on preaching the good things about their candidate rather than try to constantly cut down the opposing candidate to make them look better, don't you think? It seems like such a bogus process to me right now! Well, I guess that's all I want to say so let me know what you think!
Hey everybody, just wanted to maybe get some feedback on what everyone is writing their article analysis on, because i have NO idea! its really hard for the kids that have an undecided major. I guess it will be alittle easier after tomorrow when she goes over more of the stuff that is suppose to be in our papers, but if your reading this could you maybe just write alittle something back that would possible help me out alittle, i mean i dont want to steal your idea or anything but sometimes just hearing what others are doing might give me an idea for my own, oh and i know its an analysis paper but if u know what kinda information she wants in the paper and what its really suppose to be about just reply back to this, thanks
