Halloween

The only halloween I can remember is the one back in i think 1991. That was the year with the huge halloween blizzard. Man that sucked. To top it off I had gotten chicken pox two days before and I had itched the scabs to enormous sizes. It was horrible. I wasn't able to go get any candy and that wasnt fun as a little kid. The only good thing about that year was the twins won the world series. Go twins. See everyone in class tomorrow.

just wondering

hey guys, i was just thinking, back in high school after that whole issue with the pledge of allegance and if people should have to say it or not, one of the teachers at my school would say the pledge every monday morning and i remember being in study hall and seeing like 3/4 of the kids stand up and look at the flag and the other 1/4 just sit there are not even react. i was just thinking how rude that was and i am wondering what you guys think about it? i know that this is kinda random but i am trying to write a paper for another class and i am thinking about everything else in the world besides that paper lol, but yeah i was thinking, wow there are people in this country that are willing to fight and die for this country and then there are others that wont even stand up for 45 seconds once a week, it just really amazed me. i think the reason that i randomly thought of this is because two girls that i knew in high school are at their training for national guard and i was reading one of the emails from one of them and it just really shocked me to think that there is a large possiblilty that they might end up fighting over seas soon.... wow, thats some guts if you ask me, i cant even imagine doing half the things that they do.....

Halloween? Hmmm....

Ok this post is going to be totally useless because I (or should I say my family) do not (or does not) celebrate Halloween!! The only Halloween thing that we ever did was: we hung a big sign on our mailbox that said "Sorry, we do not celebrate Halloween" so that the kids wouldn't take the time to walk all the way up our extremely looonngggg driveway for nothing! I guess some people would think "how mean not to give the poor little kids any candy" but we don't celebrate Halloween so I think it is fair on our part to put up a sign. So that's the only memorable Halloween for me (the rest of the time we were living overseas where most people, like us, do not celebrate Halloween so we didn't have to worry).

hAlLoWeEn!!! (oh yes)

my most memorable halloween is yet to come... this afternoon i leave for MADISON, WI!!!!!! i am a very excited little pata today. this morning i went costume shopping AGAIN because i still didnt have a costume. i wanted to be a farmer with overalls..... but i couldnt find any at ragstock or ANYWHERE for that matter. after some deep thought i decided that now ill be a cowgirl instead. i will be wearing a jean skirt and a button down shirt and a cowboy hat and some suede boots. (yes...suede boots. i am only a vegan in terms of DIET). whats really neat is that i didnt even have to spend any money and i pulled together a pretty decent last minute costume. anywho, i am very excited to have the best halloween ever. i will be sure to fill you all in on the parts i remember upon my return.

MY Halloween with Eggs!!!

O.kay I have the greatest story of Halloween and eggs. Here it goes. It was like junior year right and me and my guys was thinking like "all the stores are not going to let us buy any eggs after school" so we left school to pick up at least like a million dozen, but we had to go to different stores to do it. So we got to my friends house and put them in the fridgerator for later that night. We thought again, "what would make this more fun? SODA!" Well not exactly "soda" but you get the idea, so we got some soda and by that time it was dark so we went trick-or-treating. I was the scream guy and the rest of them were like wolves and bears and whatnot, but we had these huge bookbags on! So we was egging cars, houses, kids, and squirrels so we was walking right and we saw this car coming. It started slowing down so we was RUN! but it wasn't quick enough. The car pulled out a OBAMA egg cannon and just started blasting! it hit my guy in his back and it got either Donte or my guy Brandon in his foot and it was so funny cause it went in slow motion! But that's not it! We went off the main street (stupid right?) and went into a neighborhood. We was walking and saw these two girls and started bombing them (talk about a conversation starter), they were laughing at first but one of my guys got lame and hit one of the girls in their butt and kept going. The girl said stop and we stopped but the lame didn't. It got bad and the girls started talking about "ON LARRY HOOVER and ON CHIEF WE BRINGING GUYS UP TO YALL SCHOOL TOMORROW!!" (those are high ranked guys in gangs) but we was like whatever, to make the story short none of us stayed in school all the next day.

"Xtina" makes an entrance!

Halloween, of course, is a lot of people's favorite holiday. Not true for me, but I'm still a fan. Like Meg, I guess some years it just wasn't all that great, due to the crappy weather (of course!) and the inconvenience of Halloween on a school day. But last year, I had a surprisingly fun (and FUNNY) Halloween. My brother and I decided we were going to throw a big party for the occasion. So we told everyone to come and that we weren't letting them in if they weren't wearing a costume of some sort. That plan went out the door when one by one people started showing up in their everyday clothes... kinda spoiled the fun, until the party actually started. My best friend, my brother, and I were the only ones there who were dressed up and I felt dumb, so I went to my room and changed. LOL. A while later though, my friend Alisha comes walking in fully decked out in her Christina Aguilera costume. She had the whole black long-haired wig, heavy make-up, revealing outfit thing going on. And I felt so bad for her, considering she was the last person to get there. How crappy would that be to walk into a "Halloween costume party" where no one else is wearing a costume? (It's just like on Legally Blonde where Elle walks into that so-called costume party wearing her bunny outfit and it was just a joke.) So I made my feeble attempt to make her not care by giving her the "best costume award" (which I obviously made up that second) and gave her $20. She deserved it though! And the rest of the night was a blast... that is until I had to wake up the next day and clean up the mess. And I'm sure you all know what a house will look like the day after a party. Not pleasant!

Traumatizing Halloween

Hey everyone! Happy Halloween weekend! When Clancy introduced the blog post topics for the week, I was immediately drawn to the memorable Halloween, because one Halloween stood out in my memory for all the wrong reasons! Here goes... I was 8 years old... the Halloween of 1996 I believe and there was a massive snow blizzard right before Halloween. We're talking no plows able to get in the streets and trudging thru 5 feet of snow to get from door to door. I was in love with the Little Mermaid at the time (not to mention it is still my fave Disney movie today) so I begged my mom to make me a mermaid costume. She worked super hard on it and even went as far as sewing little gold seashell charms on the costume and the whole works! It was phenomenal and my childhood Halloween dream come true! I was so excited to show it off to all my friends in the neighborhood... until I woke up to a neighborhood of white! I decided that it wasn't even an option to skip trick-or-treating (mind you I wasn't the skinniest child at this age...) and I HAD to wear my mermaid costume. So mom and dad bundle me up in my snowsuit (yes snowpants with suspenders and all) and then we proceeded to put my mermaid costume over it all. Well, the little mermaid must've discovered ice-cream that year cuz the costume was quite plump over my snowsuit. It was like the little boy on A Christmas Story that is so bundled up he 'can't put his arms down'. If you haven't seen that movie I have no idea how you've avoided it all these years, but just turn on any channel during Christmas time... I guarantee it'll be on! Anyways... as I trick-or-treated and proudly displayed my mermaid costume to all the other trick-or-treaters... I ran into some depressing situations. You know when you go up to a door and before they give you candy they either ask or try to guess what your costume is? Well, this was an issue for me since I was faced with things like, "Oh cute! She's a fish!" or "Are you a doll?" or "Um... creative costume" (cuz they couldn't figure out what it was) Nobody could tell with my massive layers under the costume that it was really a gorgeous hand-made Little Mermaid outfit. I will never forget that Halloween, not only because of the snow storm, but the traumatization of the "un-known" costume ordeal. Just to let you all know, I'm really not upset about this anymore, and I've gotten over it! Don't want you to think I have serious issues about it still or something! Hope you all have an awesome Halloween weekend free of costume misunderstandings!! See you Friday! ~Courtney

Halloween Memory

The best halloween that i can remeber is when we were in 8th or 9th grade we all knew that we were way too old to go trick or treating but we did it anyway. We went around and got candy from people. It was really funny when we went to people's houses that we knew because some of the kids in my grade were there handing out candy to little kids and they laughed at us because we were all dressed up in costumes going around getting candy. It was really funny at the time but now when i look back i am just thinking wow we were dumb thinking that was funny. That is all i have to say about that though, so you all have a wonderful day.

My Halloween

I'm not sure how many of you are from around here, but when I was little, I think about fourth grade, it was super cold one year and there was a blizzard. The costume I originally was going to be was a hippie but the clothes were to cold for me to wear. So my mom made me a giant pumpkin costume out of felt that she randomly had around the house. That was when I had this giant poofy coat that made me look like a bubble so it filled the costume perfectally. I was so happy that I had a costume because I was almost not able to go trick or treating.
The next couple of Halloween's weren't as fun for me, so now I don't really enjoy it that much. Does anyone else feel this way about it? Most people I talk to Halloween is their favorite holiday, so they think I'm dumb or weird because it hasn't always been that fun for me. I hope to have fun though this year because like all college students I will be going to madtown to party. Hope to see you guys there!

HalloweeN!

i have had many exciting halloweens in my day, but the one i am going to tell you all about was last year's halloween. Last year, being seniors in high school, my friends and i decided that we would have a Harry potter themed halloween party. it was really cool, because we looked up fantastical recipes for harry potter-like foods, and we had everything set up HP style. we had butterbeer, and other foods that we thought he might had (which turned out to be kfc because we are reallllly lazy), lots of candles as our source of light, pumkin pasties (those are pretty good), and some other things that were cool. oh and we had name tags ( i was ron) for each of us who was there (all characters). it was a real blast. so that was halloween. this year should be fun too, im not sure what im doing yet. definetely dressing up in this hot pink dress that came straight from the 80s. its awesome, so that alone should make anything this weekend fun. ok peace out

Annotation

Institute Of Medicine. Sept. 2004. National Academy of Sciences. 18 Oct. 2004 .

This is a plan that Congress inquired the Institute of Medicine to develop, regarding prevention of childhood obesity. This plan was developed by 19 experts related to the field of obesity in children. The 19 experts explain that childhood obesity is a problem that involves all of society. According to these experts society includes, Federal Government, Industry and Media, State and Local Governments, Health-Care Professionals, Community and Nonprofit Organizations, State and Local Education Authorities, and Schools. These experts stress, that the problems related to childhood obesity are associated with, behavioral, social, cultural, and other environmental factors. This report involves specific plans and suggestions that society can undergo to reduce the outbreak of childhood obesity. The experts believe that in order for the outbreak to be reduced, not only individual efforts need to be made but also industrial and societal efforts. This report also touches on facts and figures related to childhood obesity. It gives background information and statistics correlated with the causes of childhood obesity. The experts find that prevention of obesity mainly includes concentrating on energy balance, the amount of energy consumed in correlation with the amount expended.
This source is very credible. It comes from the knowledge of 19 experts related to childhood obesity. Also, this article was recommended by Dr. Marla Reicks who is a Registered dietitian and Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota, which helps the credibility of the source. This source will be used a lot for background information. It contains a lot of information that helps understand the causes and affects of obesity in children. I will also use this source for statistics. The source included helpful statistics to back up the fact that obesity is a problem and needs to be addressed by all of society. Parts of the report will also aid in supporting my argument. Especially areas of the article related to parents and ways parents can influence their children’s weight. The report contains useful information on ways parents can help their obese children become thinner in a safe and healthy way.

This is just a rough draft of one of my annotations. The website you can visit to see this source is http://www.iom.edu/report.asp?id=22596 if you have problems getting there let me know. Also if you have any suggestions on how I can make my annotation better please let me know, it would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Katelyn

distrubution of drugs to poor countries

I have just finished doing a paper on the distibuiton of drugs to poor countries and I have comments about that. Organization and companies truly proved that they are about the almighty dollar instead of prosperity of the earth which it was establish for. you need to understand the high percentage is being wipe out because of third world countries do nt get the proper medical benefits. 24.5 million of Africas population has AIDS the rest of the worlds count is 8.9 million
people having Aids. this is a big situation. many factors play into to these numbers, in Africa lack of establish government cause for rebels to be able take in product before the population has in chance to use it. there needs to be a better establish for drugs to be distrubuted to poor countries or the would have not seen its cold points.

who is going to make it

You ever heard the expression the only the strong survive well in all escence this is a true statement, but it has its flaws. as strong as some men or women are the phrase that I think tha should be put in its place weould be only the smart survive. you can be the strongest man in the world but if you do not have the smart to know what to do with it, than you are just another vunerable person in this game we call life. basically what I'm trying to get at people should start trying to use there brains instead of there fist. you never know

.it might take you places

Happy Halloween

Also another thing I wont be in class this Friday so I hope that everybody have a good weekend. Have fun but not to much where you get drunk and don't know what you are doing. A lot of stuff happens on halloween weekends.

Also people from Chicago do yawl remember when yawl was little when yawl big brother's and cousin would tell yawl about somebody go around and kill people on halloween. Not to scare anyone but, my oldest brother and cousins would alway's tell me stories when I was young about Mickey Mouse and how he go around killing people around Halloween time. I was so scared when I was young until I got older and found out that they was lying.

**SeNiOr YeAr**

i dont know why this was an espeically amazing halloween but it just was! ya i could think back to when i was like 6 and all the kids from my block dressed as M&Ms and one of the dads was the big M&M bag and think that was GREAT, but i loved this one even more. My senior year, first of all, i was a HerShEy KiSs! (cute silver dress and a long white ribbon in my hair... you get the picture!) my best friend Jen had a halloween party and all my best friends were there. i guess that halloween was sooo fabulous becuase all my best friends were there - and it was our last halloween together! everyone was something different and everyone HAD to sleep over... so it was an all nite party! plus, this was the first year we didnt go trick or treating!! haha a little lame i know, but i love trick or treating! so thats it - nothing extremely special but i love my friends back home and it'l be interesting to not be with them this year!!!

a sad halloween

so this is my halloween story, definetly not as cool as palmtrees but its a halloween story none the less. so its fifth grade and thats a prime trick or treating age, my friends and i had these huge plans with maps and routes and we remebered from the year before which houses handed out the king sized candybars and which ones handed out pop and juice and all the cool stuff. Its three days before halloween and i am craving my pumpkin with my cousin and my little brother. I had already taken all the seeds out and was starting to cut out the mouth with a knife. As you know when you take out the pumpkin seeds your hands get very slippery and i was pushing the knife into the pumpkin and my hand slid down the knife blade cutting all my finger tips, but mostly my pinky finger tip. I freaked out and started screaming because it hurt really bad and there was blood all over. It only hurt so bad because it was getting all of this pumpkin juice in the cut and that does not feel good! it was a preety deep cut so my mom had to take me to the emergency room to get stitches. We arrived at the emergency room and signed in or whatever and were told that they were to busy to handle something like this and to come back in a few hours! so my mom, very upset, drove me back to our house and we sat and watched the football game for about 2 hours while i held papertowels over my finger. we went back and waited for a while and then they went in and gave me 4 stiched across the tip of my pinky, i was not very happy about this because i hate needles and it was kinda painful. The only good part was that i got to go to school the next day and i am right handed and it just so happened to be on my right hand so i didnt have to write anything for like a week!

halloween

Hi!
Okay, I decided that I wanted to blog about one of my most memorable Halloweens.
I remember in 5th grade two of my friends and I wanted to do something completely different from everyone else. My friends and I were always trying to do things in pairs or groups, and also things way out of the ordinary. Well we decided to be Santa, a christmas tree, and an Elf. I was the elf. Our mother's made our costumes for us most of the years, so they were pretty original. We had three Halloween parties to go to that year, 4 including school and we also wanted to trick-or-treat in all of our neighborhoods. We were hardcore trick-or-treaters. Anyways, we won 4 Best costume adwards and had our pictures taken by 7 or 8 different people (people we didn't know). The next day our picture appeared in 2 newspapers, with just a little blurb about our costumes and us.
The funny thing was, it was pouring rain that night, and most of the people saw us as soaking, melted characters. My friend that was the tree, had a big hoop at the bottom and it was full of water from the rain. She also had a battery pack of lights, and they went out. I even had the curly shoes with the bells. It was pretty awesome. The best part was coming up with the idea on our own, doing it together and having fun even though it was nasty out. I do NOT like rain, but that is one of the only times I can remember not minding it at all. This year for some reason I am really in to Halloween, and really miss the fact that I cannot dress up. I cannot wait until there are some fun, older style Halloween parties in the future! There's my story, and I hope no one thinks i am a dork now!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Its your fault!

This is a very funny political cartoon showing how intensively and ruthlessly each candidate rips on the other one. It shows that candidates are ready to say almost anything in order to appeal to the audience. I has some logos, obiously showing each candidates weaknesses (taxes, dandruff), so the people looking at this cartoon will decide which person they should like. I was very amused looking at this cartoon, but I wasn't very persuaded by it, since 1) it is a political cartoon, emphasizing overexagerration, particularly in this case, and 2) this is are not very credible claims. Nobody is out there to record reasons of why this person has dandruff or how much this person's tax was raised by.

thanksgiving

Hi everyone,
This may seem totally out of the blue but since we all have been posting our subjects and commenting back on them, I have realized that we are all very different. So I started to think about traditions that families have. With the holidays coming I was kind of curious what every did or does for thanksgiving? I know for me, it really isn't that big of deal, just another family get together basically. I have never been to fond of the T-meal. I like pumpkin pie, however. During the fall though, my mom keeps some on hand.
I have a friend and her mom is TOTALLY into Holidays. She decks the whole houses and beyond out with decorations. It is a lot of fun to go over there during the holiday season. She is always right on top of everything. But I just found out that she does not like thanksgiving. She loves to host and she loves to cook for a crowd, so cooking a big meal, is not a big deal to her at all. She loves having the family over. Anyways...to make my point, I learned that they just order pizza for dinner. It really got me to thinking abolut what other's do for their holidays. If anyone wants to share anything, I would not mind reading it. Traditions are always fun to learn about, because every family has their own. One day I was chatting with a friend and we were talking about marriage (because she is getting married soon). Well i thought of the point that when a new family begins, that family is bringing technically four different families into one. The traditions that are mixed into the family, must be so different and fun.
Anyways...sorry to ramble on about this, it may seem lame. I guess I will see everyone tomorrow. Hope you all had a great homecoming weekend!

Outsourcing

So i found out that almost nobody knows what outsourcing is. Its when companies shift jobs overseas for cheaper labor in places like India and China. Do you think this is a bad thing? Is it unethical or should companies be able to do this to complete in today's global economy? Anyway, thanks for replying to my earlier post and hopefully this one too.

Global Warming and Coral Reefs

Well it's funny because I see now that I'm not the only one doing coral reefs. I was planning on talking about the affects of Global Warming and Coral Reefs and explaining a lot about coral reefs in general. I'm kind of an aquarium nerd, I have a saltwater aquarium with coral and other marine invertebrates and what not and I work at a saltwater fish store where we work a lot with marine inverts so it's something I'm well versed in but I don't want to overlap though a lot with anyone else so I'm wondering if it would be a good idea if I shifted my topic to another aspect of marine bio-diversity being affected by global warming, I mean I'm flexible, at this point in the process I could shift gears a little and only cover a little on coral reefs. So, what does everyone think? I know there are many faucets to coral reef destruction because coral reefs are so sensitive to everything from run-off and polluted rivers to over-harvesting to being damaged by tourists so I guess there might be some overlap between our papers, but some common themes and info maybe. I don't know, what does everyone think?

Homecoming

Well guys, homecoming is coming!!! For all those who will be drinking, remember to drink responsibly. We don't want any accidents. And since we've been on a losing strike, I'm hoping that we give the crowd a good show. Another thing, I would like to say thank you all for your input for my topic. I appreciate it.

I didn't have a doubt in my mind that I was going to be nervous to talk about it and open myself up.
Abby, I read that you wanted to talk to me about some things in one or your comments. I am not quite sure how to respond back and forth through the blog system, but I would be more than happy to talk with you about anything. Here is my email is you still want to talk: junk0033@umn.edu

If anyone else feels like emailing ever, please feel free. We don't get too much time to chat in class, so this is a way around it I guess. I will see everyone tomorrow (Friday). Hope everyone is enjoying their week and staying WARM! I am psyched for the weekend, anyone else?

Lets tlak about life

I feel that people take their live for granted in these times. Most people walk around like this is just given to them.
I feel that lives that we live are only privileges not just rights. Sometimes it takes a lot more than just telling someone don't take their lives for granted they actually have to experience it. I myself experience how it is in almost have your life taken away from you in split second. I was going to cross the street to get to a freinds house and i had my head turn the other way, all of suden as I turn my head a van rush near me nearly taking my whole head off. you have to learn to cherish your life before you don't have it anymore.

Thoughts on King James' Topic

King is writing about hip-hop lyrics, as you all know, and I wanted to add another point to the argument. King is writing his paper as a response to a couple of articles by Bill O'Reilly, who argues that the violent content of hip-hop lyrics is affecting children by weakening their moral fiber and possibly contributing to violent behavior.

This post was inspired by my recent purchase of "Millenium Hip-Hop Party," one of those random compilation CDs you can find at Cheapo Discs for six bucks. The disc contains hip-hop songs from the late 80s and early 90s (high school for me!), and I thought of King's topic as I listened to songs like "It Takes Two" by MC Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, and "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Loc. At first, it struck me how different the late 80s/early 90s content was from what we hear now. For example, compare the lyrics to "Funky Cold Medina" to "What's Your Fantasy?" by Ludacris (an artist singled out by Bill O'Reilly). The Ludacris song is much more explicit.

But then I remembered: Hey, it's not like we didn't have explicit content back then. Heck, we had 2 Live Crew, NWA, DJ Qwik, and plenty of other choices. The difference as I see it is that the radio doesn't censor nearly as much as it did when I was in my early teens. I remember when the radio stations substituted "love" for "sex" in the songs "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd and "I Want Your Sex" by George Michael. It seems to me that the explicit content is more in the mainstream now than it was in my formative years.

But here's the really important point I want to make: It irritates me to no end when people like O'Reilly talk about hip-hop as though it's one thing with only two topics in the lyrics -- sex and violence (oh, and maybe drugs) -- when there's so much more to it. What about the critiques of American culture found in "I Can" by Nas and "Why" by Jadakiss? What about beautiful love songs like "The Light" by Common?

As you can tell, I love hip-hop, and I have plenty to say about it, but I'll stop and let King do the rest of the talking.

Demise of Coral Reefs

This is sort of a reply to Alia's entry. I also agree with Alia in that I also believe that writing these research papers is beneficial to us. It's always great to be able to pick your own topic, one you're interested in, and then find out everything you can on it. I for one chose the death of coral reefs. I went to an imax movie on coral reefs 2 summers ago at the science musuem and I thought it was going to be the most boring movie ever! But it actually turned out to be one of the most interesting imax movies I've seen yet. I've always been interested in marine biology, but never for a second considered researching the coral reef aspect. But here I am and I'm enjoying learning about the whole complex ecosystems of coral reefs and am increasingly concerned about their conservation. Anyone else interested in this topic? Or anything interesting to add? I'd love to hear anyone's comments.

Taking Off the Mask

Does anyone have else difficulty starting a weblog? Maybe that's the reason this will only be my 2nd blog ever. That will change soon enough. I know that most of you in our class don't know me at all. And who could blame you. So here I am. My name is Michelle. I'm from a small town in SD. I came to UMN on a spur of the moment thing I guess you could say. Since I've been here I feel like I've been walking around wearing a mask and not letting anyone in and not really experiencing my life. But I feel so blessed right now. I have everything I've been wanting the past 3 years. But I'm not happy and I don't know why. It's like seeing and living the bright side, but not being able to feel it. I'm not good at asking for advice and I figure what an easy (although embarassing) way to do so. I've suffered from depression for the past 3 years and now I can finally not be ashamed. It could happen to anyone, b/c it's just a chemical inbalance right? Does anyone have any previous experience with depression? And what are your opinions on the matter? I really enjoy the people in our class, even though I don't know all of you well. And I would appreciate anyones input.

Something Interesting

As I was reading through everyone's posts about their prospectus topics, it occured to me that writing these research papers is really going to benefit us..I mean, on most people's posts, the comments said that the person did not know much about this topic but is interested in knowing more. Sometimes some people have remotely heard of the topic but don't know a lot of detail about it, and other times people give their opinions. Writing these papers will give us a chance to get a better understanding about different issues, and will help us expand our thinking horizons by allowing us to use our skills of evaluation to evaluate eachother's arguments. I am glad that we are all doing such diverse topics because it is great to know about different issues/practices etc... Just a little thought that crossed my mind...does anyone else feel this way ?? (hey here is a chance to reply to a blog post and get lots of extra points *wink wink* so take this opportunity and COMMENT !!!!

Creation Vs. Evolution

What do you guys think about evolution? Do you think that it should be taught in schools? Were you forced to learn about it? Did your teacher make sure that you knew it was only a theory? Please take some time to answer these questions for me, this is a very important topic, I will appreciate any and all comments.

Write Your Name in

The elections are coming up and I'm starting to feel as if I shouldn't vote. I think that India Arie should run for president, because she is a peaceful person. her music makes you see the world in a new light and it is very relaxing. Besides I can't stand George Bush, I totally disagree with all of his decisions. I mean, I'll admit that he is such a cute old man, and he does take care of his presidential business, but I don't like him.

Well, I don't like John Kerry either. He's one of the most hideous people I have ever seen in my life. That's not why I don't like him though. I don't like him, because he's so shady. I can tell that he is trying to hide something from us. What has the united States come to. Are these two guys the best that we have. Were in for trouble if we can't get anyone better than this. We have one guy who can't use words bigger than two syllables and a guy who looks like he just woke up from the dead. We have to put a stop for this. On November second when we go to vote, I'm writing my own name in.

Narrowing...

O.kay, I did some research and I narrowed my topic to the effect of rap lyrics on the youth of today. Now what do you all think? Do you feel that rap lyrics have a negative effect on our children or do you think that their behavior has nothing to do with that. Let me know and as always...HOLLATCHABOUGH!

Courtney's Topic

Hey everyone! Hope you all enjoy your day off class tomorrow and have a great weekend first of all! Second of all, I wanted to get my topic out there for you all to comment on before the prospectus is due. I am writing mine about the controversy surrounding membership policies at Augusta National Golf Club. Have you even heard of Augusta National ever? It is the golf club where the Masters Tournament is held each year which is considered the biggest PGA tournament in the world. Well anyways, Augusta National does not allow women to become members of their golf club, so in other words, it is a male-only club. I am interested to see initial reactions from you guys regarding this issue. Also, were any of you aware that this membership policy existed or do any of you even have any interest in the game of golf? I was on our high school Varsity Golf Team, and naturally since I am a female golfer I became interested in this topic. I think it will be interesting to compare the views of the girls in the class to the views of the guys in the class regarding the minimal amount of informatio I have given you about my topic. I don't want to spoil the fun and tell you all about the background info. on my topic since the idea here is to find out how much you ALREADY know. So I guess that's it, please comment back with your input! See you all Monday! ~Courtney

Just Felt Like Talking

I was just thinking right. Well, for the last few weeks I have been doing pretty good. I have been getting all my work in on time. I have done what is needed to pass my classes and I talk to most of my teachers. I have been tired at times but it would just go away you know, but today I got to thinking bout everything and I just paused for like five whole minutes I just paused. It seemed like the world stopped for like five minutes and one of the main things that kept going in and out of my head was the fact that I try my best and mostly everything I do and to this point I have not received a grade that was what I expected. I'm thinking 91 and here comes 79, let's go for the A and I get a C, what is really good. I don't know why I put my life out there like that, but there's a blog that I hope someone feels me on. Hollatchabough.

empires must end!!

Throughout history empires have grown and have fallen then a new one comes along and then falls. I was thinking do u ever believe that could happen to the United States??? Its kinda weird to think of our country falling to a lower power. I think this could happen because are troops are soooooo spread out and so stretched thin. this makes our power seem not as powerful. to me its kind of like what happened in the summer olympics with the USA basketball team. in the early 90's the DREAM TEAM which consisted of Micheal Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone, John Stockton, David Robinson this was the greatest team assembled. they blew every country out of the water by 50 points. But, this year the so called "Dream Team" lost three times and got the bronze medal. The country that used to have complete control of the sport lost its grip. could this happen to our country too?? jus wondering give me some feedback.

Check the Topic

O.kay check this out, the topic of my prospectus is the effect that hip-hop has on society like politics, pop culture, fashion, and even dances. Just think, back in the day, hip-hop was shunned and not taken seriously, and now it is played on popular radio stations, television channels, and it has now taken politics by storm. The new "Vote or Die" motto has been promoted by hip-hop/fashion mogul, Sean "P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, Puffy, Diddy, Daddy" Combs. I am going against the arguments of Bill O'Reilly when he talks against hip-hop. My facts are coming, but this is the gist of my paper. What do you think?

What is beef?

What is beef? Beef is a noun and it is also a verb. Beef is when you got a problem with someone else such as if I was to say, "Mike and Bill got a lot of beef between each other" or if I was to say "These guys have been beefing seriously for at least a week". You ask what is so special about beef? Well, I love hip-hop and it seems to me as if in hip-hop, beef is the driving force of the selling of albums. For example, Jay-Z and Nas had beef between each other for the longest, and I don't have concrete facts, but I am almost sure that their CD album sales increased by at least ten percent. I think that in hip-hop, skills should just be enough to get you at the top of the charts. Just think, the beef between East Coast and West Coast got Tupac and Biggie killed.

No news would be better news!!!

WUZ UP yall!!!!!!!
How are u guys doin ok i have a big problem with the news system in the United States. It is not news at all I really dislike it. The stories are not uplifting at all. The stories are all about someone dying or being killed. When i turn on the Fox News at 10 The first seven topics of the night was about soliders dying and people being killed in Minnesota. Ok honestly how many people are murdered in Minnesota a day???? It gets soo bad that if they dont have their quota of murders per show then they go on to murder cases in other states. i dont know maybe im being too critical i dunno what do u think???

Nursing Shortage

Lately, I have been working my butt off when it comes to my studies. I have to get an amazing GPA this semester in order to have any chance at getting into the U of MN's Nursing School. Currently, the school accepts 25% of the applicants. I have a hard time understanding this because there is such a nursing shortage. If nurses are in such high demand right now, then why can't they admit a higher number of qualified people into the nursing schools? If you ask me, nursing programs everywhere need to be expanded and utilized to educate more nurses... thus eliminating the shortage.

slightly random!

Ok, so I really didn't know what to post a blog about this week because I feel like lately I've just been posting blogs on the same thing, so I'm going to start with a little incident that Pata and I witnessed last week. We were walking back from this class on Wednesday where on the sidewalk I saw a little mouse type creature. It was sooo small, quite possibly the smallest little rodent i've ever seen. Ok so we were going to try to save it but we had no where to put it and before we knew it.. the animal was in the street! We watched it and prayed that it would make it safely across when the cars started going and all of the sudden it was smushed in the middle of the road... hit by a red car. We were so totally sad! Alright so that, and now I'm going to once again go back to the topic of the election. As I said before, I changed my mind and decided to vote. I got bombarded by a group of people from the Republicans on campus telling me that I have to get on their e-mail list and that I have to vote for Bush. So my friend and I sat there and listened to them convince us to vote for Bush and got on their email listing and they send me emails EVERYDAY! I went to a meeting that they were holding, and gave it a chance. It actually informed me a lot on the standings people had. Then when I went home this past weekend, my dad and I watched the debate on Friday. Then on Sunday when I got back to school, a friend of mine gave me a speech about voting for Kerry. I decided that everyone that isn't voting, or is voting just because they can and have no idea about the issues...which used to be me... cant' complain about things that go on in the country over the next four years. Last but not least for this blog I was going to talk about my research perspectus. I think that I finally picked a topic and that is over the policy of open adoption. It's always interested me, especially since last year my English teacher was in the process of adopting and a child and I learned about the process a little bit and how at the last minute a cihld can be taken away from waiting adoptive parents. If anyone has any information on this subject or I guess was adopted, I'd love to hear about it. That's all for now, have a good night! :)

Christopher reeves

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to quick write a little thing about Christopher Reeves. Most of you probably know that he passed away from an infection that killed him. I don't know too much about him, but I do know him from appearance. If I heard his name, I would not know who he is. On Monday I was driving to school when the radio said he had died, and they started talking about him and his life after the horse accident. I put two and two together and realized that the guy i had been terrifed of during my childhood passed away. I felt awful for being terrified of him. He was such a great person wih a heck of an attitude. I guess I just wanted to tell you guys that he had a great head on his shoulders. I know I would have given up if I were him.
I admire so much his zest for life even after it could have ended for him. Sorry I am kind of confused on what I should say. I lost my train of thought. I will try to post more later.

Whats happening yall how u doin I am doing my reasearch paper on how steroids in the game of baseball has hurt the game in the last ten years. Here is some background info for yall. In the past decade The number of homeruns hit has skyrocketted. many has contributed this to the use of Steriods. Last year Ken Caminitti a former American Leauge MVP in 1996 Went public and said the year that he won the MVP he was using steriods regularly. i was jus wondering if u think is cheating because steroids give players more power to hit home runs. jus wondering your feelings.

flash movie

hi its abby again and i just posted a blog about the flash movie but forgot some stuff i had on my mind. i think, and i know someone mentioned this in their blog, that the way Kerry and Bush come together in the end of the movie, says A LOT!!! they are both fighting for the same position and depending on who wins, the other candidate will have to deal, and continue to live in the US (if they dont decide to move out of the country - HA!) ultimately, they both want the people to live in a safe and hopefully happy enviornment. ya they have VERY different views on A LOT of different topics, but their job is to maintain the wellness of the people - it's their choice how they achieve that.

flash movie

i think this flash movie was quite informative. (by the way i just typed this whole blog and lost it!!! uk!) it was an excellent example of pathos, emotions. Going back and forth between candidates with nothing but insults, you never once saw the smile from Kerry or Bush's face go away. i think that shows the mental strength you must have to run for president, which both candidates have: confidence too! you have to be able to take the insults and know that not every person in the US is going to like you or have nice things to say about you and your party. Although it was entirely based on sarcasm, it had a lot of good facts, that could teach the not so educated more about the candidates. For example, one could learn that Bush is from Texas, and that Kerry fought and won three purple hearts. This is all good information to have when choosing which candidate to vote for. i think the parody was a very effective way to depict the information. i personally hate readying LOONG articles about what the candidates support and what goes on in DC. i think this flash movie taught me about each poltical party WHILE keeping me fully entertained, twice in a row! especially for first time voters who are typically kids, things like this make people want to get out and vote, because it gives sarcasm about the parties, which is found daily among teenagers, etc. i think for maybe people who are very serious about the election and who they are voting for, these movies arent the best, because they do insult the candidates, which may insult the people. This is one disadvantage, but only for people who lack sense of humor. too bad for them!
