Nomy Lamm's essay

Hey everyone, I just read the "It's a Big Fat Revolution" essay and I would characterizer her style and tone as straight forward. She seems to say exactly what she feels and doesn't really care the manor that it is said in. I think it is rhetorically effective because it is different and interesting. It's nice to read something away from typical informative essays. The article kept me interested but I guess that could also be because I have interest in obesity and have been researching and writing about the topic haha I think there is "fat hating" that happens in society. I guess I was particularly interested in the ways that being fat affects Lamm's life. She talks about how she feels like she should look but now finds that she is happy being her overweight self. But I feel like she thinks about it a lot and it does have negative affects on her life. I think this because of what she writes about all of the things that go through her mind. For example she says "but occasionally, when I look in the mirror and i see this body that is so different from my friends', so different from what i'm told it should be, i just want to hide away and not deal with it anymore". I think from the way society is, it is really hard to not have negative thoughts about your body if you are overweight or obese. I think it is great if she feels happy about her body and can overcome these ideas that society has of a perfect body but I am not sure if she can keep all of the negative thoughts about being overweight out of her head. I liked her straight forward type of writing, she gets her points across and lets you take them or leave them. It was interesting to read. I might have to comment more on this essay when I have more time. Anyways, see you in class tomorrow!

Fans out of Control

Wats good yall,

well lately i have been watching ESPN and there has been numerous incidents of sports players fighting with each other and even fans. last week during a nba basketball game between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons in Detroit Ron Artest a player for the pacers was near the crowd when a fan threw a water bottle at him and hit him in his face. Ron artest has a short fuse and that act set him off so he ran into the stands and starts to fight the fan and a great big rumble insues between the whole pacers team the pistons team and some fans. though this was a bad act i believe Ron Artest could have handled himself better but the fan had no right to throw anything at him. i think people have lost thier boundaries as fans heckling is ok but when u do something physically to a player and expect them just to allow it it is no good. this is wat i think what do you guys think are fans getting out of control??

"A Raisin In The Sun"

Hello class, first off I am going to tell you about what I plan to do this weekend and then let you know a little about the topic. Since I have a late class Wednesday and there are no late flights going out later than I want them I am leaving Thursday evening. I will be arriving into Chicago at like 2:00pm hopefully. The first thing I am going to do is visit some of my family (my great grandma, grandma, moms, and cousins). I am going to get so full that day. I am going to eat at like three different places, so don’t be to surprise if I come back ten pounds heavier than I was. After that day I plan to spend the rest of my time chilling and hanging out with friends. Okay enough of that I would like to talk about the title of my topic. “A Raisin In The Sun,” everyone knows that I will be going back to Chicago for thanksgiving and plan to make the best of it. Man, I am so happy to be going back to Chicago. I miss “Chi-Town” badly and can’t wait until I get there. I’ve been here in Minnesota for three months straight and never spent a full weekend in my hometown, but it seems as if I have been here for like three years or something. I really don’t have anything against this state but being here made me really appreciate Chicago even more than what I been appreciating it. I miss family, friends, and can’t forget the honey’s too. Minnesota is a nice state and everything, but being here really made me feel like a “Raisin In The Sun.” Some of those who aren’t form here might know what I’m talking about. Being in a new surrounding makes you feel like an outsider, I mean not knowing anything, until you find your place and I hope to find mine soon. Basically what I mean by that is I am not from this state and everybody acts totally different than people on Chicago. Me being me I don’t know how to react to it so I just be quiet. I mean I know how to get to know people but I just don’t go up to the person and say hi. Many people that I met have approach me that way. Hopefully you guys know what I mean.

To the 1101 Rhetors

I'm about to hop on a plane headed to Alabama (well, Memphis, TN really, where my mom will pick me up), but before I go, I want to express some concern about some of the recent content around here. The goal of good argumentation is to reach what philosopher Jürgen Habermas calls a "rational-critical consensus," or the most reasonable solution to a problem, as the authors of our textbook put it. What that means is this: Interlocutors (participants) in any given discussion need to make a sincere, considerate effort to understand the positions of those who do not agree with them and engage the positions thoughtfully and respectfully. Some of what's up here now is not doing this, a point which has already been discussed here, but one we clearly need to revisit.

So, here's what I'd like you to do before you click "Save" (or "Post" in the case of comments). Ask yourself: Are my words thoughtful, sincere, and respectful? Have I made a good-faith effort to understand the positions of the interlocutors who disagree with me? Could someone who disagrees with my position interpret my words as baiting? Have I represented my own position in a clear, reasonable, well-supported manner that invites a sincere, thoughtful, respectful response from the other participants in the discussion?

CoPy CaT

first of all, thanks to courtney for giving me this "bLoG idEa." my top ten QuOtEs::
(in no particular order)
1. "we all take paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere.
2. "dont take life too seriously because you cant come out of it alive.
3. never miss someone from your past because there is a reason they arent in ur future.
4. "Never give up on something you cant go a day without thinking about."
5. "be experimental. its better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission."
6. "if people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done."
7 - 10. "As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let us down probably will. You will have your heart broken, probably more than once, and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing so fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too hard, and love like you've never been hurt, because every 60 seconds you spend mad or upset is a minute of happiness that you'll never get back."

ENJOY!!!!!

stupid vegan diet

alright...
so i am very annoyed with my research topic. eating a vegan diet for 3 months gave me uncomfortable gastro-intestinal problems (ill spare you all the gross details) and made me sooooooooo tired. however, i dont think im going to change my research question because it is suggested that you EASE into the vegan lifestyle... first starting with meat, then moving on to parts of the dairy group, then the rest of the dairy, and then the other forbidden foods should be limited little by little. i suppose if i had tapered off my animal-products consumption, it may have been different. so yeah.... im keeping it the same. (its still annoying though!) hope all had a good weekend, see you tomorrrow.

Surprised !

I'm surprised no one commented on those pictures...I thought they were pretty interesting...I'm sure Republicans would be angry though (i am not a Republican or a Democrat so it doesn't make a difference to me)...

Sorry World

religion or spiritual

I have a question that I would like to ask very one what is the difference between religion and spirituality. to me I feel that spirituality is more important than saying that you have religion in your life. I think that every one knows an older gentlemen or women that goes to church every sunday, but with the personallty that she potrays you could never tell the differences if she was reallybatting for tyhe other team or not.

This is what I feel that most people feel that religion really is I myself perfer to say that I am more spiritual than anything else. because I don't really go to church but I beleive in God and I try to follow his words the way I know how.

This is actually a question what do you feel is better being religious or spiritual.

Islam: Empire of Faith

I watched this movie and really enjoyed it...especially the part where they described the life of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh)...I was really glad to see non-Muslim producers portraying a correct image of Islam, instead of the ususal not-quite-right image in a lot of other movies I have seen about this religion. I think the fact that the producer is not a Muslim increases his credibility in a way because it shows he is not making a movie with a bias (as a Muslim producer might be accused of)..The film had some wonderful photography, especially of the mosques and palaces in various cities all over South West Asia, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. There were some things that bothered me though; little mistakes that to me seem as though they would be the easiest mistakes for a producer to avoid. For example, when they had a reenaction of people praying (at the time of the prophet), the actors were not even pretending to pray correctly. The movements they were preforming were quite obviously wrong (most any practicing Muslim-especially one who prays- could easily spot the mistakes, and I felt sad that they hadn't researched the Muslim prayer rituals which are simple-yet important- enough to get them correct.
Another example (which again seems like such a silly mistake) was when they had the 'scholars' in Baghdad writing ...they were writing from left to write which is not how arabic is written..Arabic is written from right to left, and to see these actors getting that wrong was just so weird. I was thinking, that is such a simple thing, why couldn't the producer have made sure that the actors were acting correctly? There were several other things also (the Muezzin was not a real muezzin; it was pretty obvious because he wasn't doing the call to prayer correctly-again, why couldn't they have gone to the trouble of finding an Imam from any local mosque who would do the job correctly?)...
But I have to admit the movie was good, and I enjoyed it immensly; the first part more than the second though. I highly recommend this movie for anyone interested in learning a little background information about Islam, without going into the practices/teachings of the religion itself. This movie was good because it did not focus on the teachings of Islam (so it doesn't make the audience feel like the producer is trying to convert you !), rather it focuses on the history of the religion, of the great empire of faith, and how Islam had and has such an influence on the West. It's Me!

Hi Everyone!
Well I have a couple seconds and access to a computer so I thought I would blog quite to check in. So it looks like a blog topic was favorite movies or music. That's cool. I wonder what you guys are talking about in class right now? Things are going fine. I am off of observation finally and now have a little (not a lot) more freedom than before. I have become pretty close to a girl from Chicago and she is doing a good job keeping me company. Everyone thinks we look alike and they call us sisters. Anyways...I did this amazing obstacle in REC. today. It was so powerful it made me cry. This was my first time being off the 2nd floor since I had been here so I was excited. An obstacle was designed to represent our life line. It was roped off and had little birdies (the bad-mitten kind) spread all around and bowling pins and cones roped together. There were also some little bean toys that. WE had to be blind-folded and walk through the course by having a partner answer yes or no questions that we would ask to guide us through it. You didn't want to hit anything, because if you did you would get spun around one time or two. The birdies, pins, cones represented relapses in recovery and the little bean toys represented good things in life, like family and friends. You had to go about the course by asking your partner questions like, "can i go left? can I go right, is something good by me?" They would then answer yes or no. I didn't get all the way through the course because for some reason it had too strong of an affect on me and I had to stop. It was fun though. Weather has sucked and that has not made me happy. I miss everyone and everything back home so much. I just want to get out of here. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and I am thinking of all of you! Good Turkey hunting!

I dont really want to spoil the movie for those of you who havent seen it so i wont tell too much about it. The team is really good, but have some troubles throughout the season. hey, i guess this post is kinda directed towards Abby, but i was watching the news last night and on channel 11 they did a special on how men and women shop differently, i am not sure if your paper just focuses on just different body types or different sexes, but if it compares men and women this might help you, just thought i would let you know

The U's Fancy Chairs

Last night I was going through the channels and I saw a commerical for a segment on how the U spends half a million dollars on these fancy chairs and no one knows where they are. So the news team came out and investigated it. The funny thing about it is that I have a friend who was walking around the library on the west bank and came across a bunch of these chairs. The chairs really aren't missing they are just hidding. On another fancy tid bit, I guess the U spends a quater of a million dollars on ICE! Ok well let me know if anyone knows anything else about this.

More on terrorism

Also think about this...

"...defining the adversary as 'terror' made it easier [for the Bush administration] to deflect public attention from evidence suggesting that it was America's quasi-imperial role that was provoking resistance-and would continue to do so. In truth, as Daniel Pipes has correctly noted, terror is a tactic, not an enemy 1. But by insisting that its quarrel was with terror-rather than, for example, with radical Islam- the United States obscurred the political roots of the confrontation. U.S officials dismissed as irrelevant the fact that Osama bin Laden's actions (however contemptible) represented an expression of strongly held convictions: a deep seated resentment of the U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf and a determination to remove that presence by whatever means necessary 2." 3

1 Daniel Pipes, "What Bush Got Right-and Wrong," Jerusalem Post, September 26, 2001..

2 In a videotape released on October 7,2001, Osama bin Laden vowed to continue his war against the United States until "all the army of infidels depart the land of Muhammad," referring to the U.S military pesence in Saudi Arabia; "Bin Laden's Statement: "The Sword Fell," New York Times, October 8, 2001, p. B7.

Not terrorism in itself...

Think about this statement....

"Terror...was not the source of opposition to the United States, but only one especially malignant expression of that opposition. Given the record of the previous decade...the pursuit of ever-greater openness was likely to encounter further resistance, if not from Islamic radicals, then from other states or movements or individuals persuaded (not without reason) that globalization "was just a shorthand for a new world dominated by Americans"1 and unhappy with that prospect."2

D=R

Democrats=Republicans

Yes, I'm serious! I've been reading this book on American foreign policy after the Cold War called : American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy by Andrew J. Bacevich....there is this really convincing chapter called "Different Drummers, Same Drum" and basically he is arguing that even though democrat and republican Presidents are thought of as having very different stances on issues, and very different foreign policies, they are actually identical!!!

This chapter strengthened my original position (that both Kerry and Bush are the same, and America would live the same fate under each)..and for anyone who doubts this position I highly recommend reading "Different Drummers, Same Drum" in Andrew J. Bacevich's American Empire...

Hooray for Bacevich!!

Response to Romisha's Topic

I think it's an good topic because it's something almost everyone would have a feeling on one way or the other. Personally I can say that from my experience evolution has been very implicitly taught and used in science curriculum and I think sometimes it goes under students noses without them even realizing it. For instance, when ppl talk about the age of the Earth the numbers they're using probably don't go with the creation theory and by default are most likely being drawn from the "big bang theory." I consider myself a Christian, but personally I tend to dissociate myself from organized religions sometimes, I believe strictly what it says Christ 'said' in the bible and that's how I 'try' to live my life. I think there's more important things to be said about the bible than debating the fine points from Genesis. My philosophy is that I think of the Universe as a giant and complex factory of sorts that is self maintaining and self sustaining. God created the equipment, assembled it, but then he plugged it all in and let it go. So that's my philosophy and I agree with Romisha that by not believing in "God" and teaching "Evolution" that itself is its own sort of a religion, and religion shouldn't be taught in public schools unless it's a special elective course.

Hey Everyone

HI!
This is Tonna. This is my third day of treatment and it is going okay. Still getting into the swing of things. It helps that I have been in treatment before because a lot of the rules are kind of the same. I hope everyone is getting anxious for Thanksgiving break, as I know many get to go home and visit family. I unfortunently do not, but It will be fine. It is for the best that I am here. I have met some great people and it seems that things will go well. I better go I just wanted to quick say hello, and let you guys know I am thinking of you!

Here is my address if anyone wants it!

[This is Clancy: I cut the address out and am going to send it to the class over email. I hope that's okay; I didn't want any strangers to be able to get in touch with you there, palm tree.]

peer editing is indeed a nice idea

hello all,
although i know that many people in the class are fed up with peer editing, i would like to address a positive aspect of it. yes, we all have (at one point or another) had a partner that didnt do SQUAT, and perhaps our papers have suffered as a result of this, but i am not going to lie, it was nice to read other peoples work. i read meg, donte, and ben's papers thusfar, and i can honestly say i enjoyed reading them. no...i didnt necessarily enjoy circling mistakes and writing comments and the like...however, i learned a lot about oil drilling (meg), environmental racism (donte) and hybrid cars (ben). sometimes i forget that issues like that exist, and its nice to read about what other people deem as imprtant life issues that we all face dailiy.

Sooo... I am trying to look for classes I can take next semester, and I can't find any that are something that I want to study. I looked for writing classes, but they all have a weird prereq that I don't understand. I looked for Economics classes, but I am only a Junior in HighSchool, and you can't take ECON classes when you are a junior. I looked for Accounting and Finance classes, but all of them are 3xxx to 4xxx classes, and you have to have 60+ credits to take these classes, because they teach them only at the Carlson School of Managment. This is sooooo stressful!

Realistically...(Re:Re: The Grudge)

Now I completely feel you on your reply, but let's be realistic, your friends that you have now, I am sure that you all have not been just peachy keen for however long you all have been friends, am I right? So when you say that never forgive a person who killed once, I'm not Jesus so I don't have to forgive him for that because to kill someone is a deadly sin, but for a practical joke that went wrong to receive the same recoil is not completely necessary, in my opinion. We are all new to each other and mistakes are going to happen, believe me. I almost lost one of my best friends over the mistake of not knowing a boundary, but we cleared it up and are now closer than ever so think of what is being effected before you burn bridges is the advice of king james.

here is another one

What to do

What am i finna do
When all i think of is u
Hoping you feel this too
No matter how long its been
Love is like a game u cant win
Damn why cant i be real
And tell her how i feel
When i say somthing i cut it off
Cause i dont want to seem soft
But sometimes i slip
and the softest thing from my lips
Is the skin above your hips
Your kisses are sweet as milk
And your hair feels like silk
Im confused bout one thing
When u speak how do u get angels to sing??
With you i lose all of my fears
Damn i want to be wit you for years.

the one

Late at night when the night is done
I sit there and think of the one
the one who fills my heart with joy
To her my heart is bound
cause she beautiful and her booty is round
when you call me my heart halts
i almost die and its all your fault
but if i died in that instant it would be cool
cause the last voice i heard was u

RE: The Grudge

hmmmm... to me its hard to trust new people especially when u are in a new place. but apologies can only go too far and convicts can kill people and say sorry but the person is not forgiven for it so i dunno for me do me wrong once the person will not get the chance to do it again at all.

The Grudge

I know everyone out there has heard about that new movie starring Sara Michelle Gellar, and some of you still haven't seen it so I'm not going to give a review, but a little information to help you understand the movie. I also have a question for you all to think about. Now in China, it is legend that if someone dies in a fury or through rage, that spirit remains in the place where it was killed and never leaves. Now thats the help for the movie if you all were planning to see it and now here's my question: If you did something to a new friend that was wrong, but you apologized and it has been over three weeks, how long would you expect that grudge held by your friend to be?

Highschool Monster

I think that the viewpoint in the article titled 'The Monster that is High School' was extreme. I know several jocks, cheerleaders, preps and the rest of the 'popular kids.' They are not let off the hook because of who they are. The reason that they get coverage is because they do something. Rather than just sitting and complaining, they are involved in the school with sports and clubs. The arguement that the author brings up about cliques being exclusive is true. The author is taking an extreme stance of the topic, perhaps so much that the argument is ineffective. Instead of ranting at the groups he dislikes and beating them up and threatening them with knives he should try to be more peaceful. The fact that he considered shooting people seriously hurts his credibility. Also, where did he get the idea that these popular groups are outside the law. His article could be convincing or more intriguing if he put some efffort to persuade and inform others instead if venting his personal feelings.

leaving

Hi everyone~
I just wanted to let anyone who is interested, that I am not going to be coming back to class this semester. As most of you know, I have anorexia. It has gotten pretty bad and after numerous treatments, I am off to the last straw. EARLY Monday morning I am going to residential treatment about 5.5 hours away. I will live there for 45-90 days. It could be longer, but my family and I are not anticipating that. I am not sure what things are going to be like, but I am going to be spending a tremendous amount of time on the mental, emotional aspect of the disease. It is a progress by progress situation. Most likely I will not be able to go home for Christmas, which I am really bummed about, and I don't know when I will be able to start second semester. I am not blogging about this to get sympathy, I just wanted everyone to know that I will miss our class and all of you. It has been a great class. We are all a good mix. I will possibly get access to my laptop and internet a couple days a week for school reasons, but I plan to try and blog since this is school related. I hope to keep in touch with most if not all of you! Feel free to email me since I can check that every so often, but if not no big deal. I want to wish everyone good luck in class and everything that you endure. Aim for the stars, but land on the moon! I hope to be in touch!!!!!

Eid !!!! (and fasting)

Okay I don't expect many people to know what I am talking about..Eid?? What's that? How do you pronounce it? First of all, I have to say I am very excited and looking forward to the weekend because it is one of the two holidays Muslims celebrate...Eid is the equivalent to Christmas for Christians..maybe that helps explain why I am so excited! Having Eid at the same time as trying to finish the bibliography (and other school work) is really annoying though....Eid though is not like Christmas in that Christmas is on a set day (Dec 25), while the date Eid falls on changes depending on the siting of the moon...Moon? What? Okay, I'll explain for anyone interested! Muslims have a month called Ramadan where we fast from sunrise to sunset every day for a month. This fasting helps us to feel grateful for the blessing of food, and helps us feel the pain and suffering that starving people feel, strengthing our awareness to what other fellow human beings are going through in the world. Ramadan is special in other ways too, and is about more than just fasting, but there are waaayy too many details for a blog post! I don't know if anyone noticed, but I have been fasting all month long, (thats why I didnt eat any candy when Clancy brought some to class a few weeks ago), and I am sad to say goodbye to Ramadan, the holy month (for Muslims). Now Eid is a holiday which marks the ending of the month of Ramadan, and the beginning of the new month called Shawal. Muslims follow the lunar calender which depends on the moon, and so the length of the months differ each year according to the position of the moon. Okay I know that's a lot of info to keep track of all at once!! But I'm just really happy because now its Eid, which means partying, candy, presents and FUN!! So yayay! C ya on Wednesday everyone (I wont be here Monday)....Oh by the way, I wonder if that guy Chris would like to debate the issue of me celebrating Eid instead of "acclimating" my traditions to those of America!!!!!!!!!! looooool

Needed to read that earlier!

Wow! That is my first reaction to the blog post of A Sad American. I am not going to lie or try to hide the fact that I did vote for Kerry. However; I am in a slight sense relieved that he didn't win the election. As I've said before, I absolutely hate getting involved in political issues but I chose to vote and become involved because I believe we should exercise the rights that people fought hard for us to have. I was one of those many people who went into the polls that day with a 'wish-washy' feel on who they really genuinely wanted to support and vote for. I went back and forth and quite honestly, do not know exactly why I voted for Kerry. Just as Sad American, I view myself as more of a liberal and would have liked to see a Democrat win the election but not necessarily John Kerry. I completely agree with the reasons why Kerry didn't get the vote from Sad American and I think it is 100% okay for her to have voted for Bush without actually supporting Bush's ideas. I wish I would have read that blog earlier because I felt the same way in my mind where I didn't really personally like either candidate, and actually contemplated writing in myself or someone else, and I feel Sad American made a great deal of sense when explaining how voters like "us" felt in the election process. I agree it is better to have someone running your country who actually stands behind their words and follows through with their plans, even if I don't completely agree with their specific ideas on all things. I hope more people get the chance to read Sad American's blog so they can also make some sense of why they felt the way they did about their 'wishy-washy' vote decision like I did. Finally, I have found something that involves the election and politics that I actually enjoyed reading.

Causal Arguments by Analogy or Precedent

Here are the examples from class today:

A sound analogy (at least I think so):

Writing is like basketball.

The more essays you write, the more effective, persuasive ones you'll write, just as the more hoops you shoot, the more times you'll get the ball in the basket.

The underlying cause/effect claim being made here is: The time and energy you devote to a given endeavor causes you to become better and more successful at it (also possibly a law-of-averages claim). PLEASE NOTE: I think this is a sound analogy, based primarily on my experience as a writer and as a teacher of writing. Not everyone agrees, though. Some people might argue that writing is a natural talent that one is either born with or not and call my analogy a false analogy, making the counter-analogy that good writing is like eye color: Writing talent is a natural attribute just as having green eyes is a natural attribute. Fair enough...but I happen to think that particular analogy is poppycock.

Now for what canoeguy808 would argue is a false analogy:

The job market is like a field of lilies.

If you go into the field and pick 100 lilies, then cart them over to a field five miles away, you reduce the number of lilies in that field, just as if you pick 100 IT jobs and outsource them to India, there will be fewer jobs in that market.

HOWEVER, Canoeguy808 is arguing that the job market is not like a field of lilies, that the analogy is false and outsourcing some jobs can, in fact, create even more jobs (so you end up with a net job gain). (He'll also, of course, be providing evidence to support this claim, and maybe a counter-analogy? Canoeguy808, what would be a more appropriate analogy for what the job market is like and what outsourcing's effect on the market is?)

Sad America

Hey everyone. I read sad america and I found I agreed with a lot of what she said. I voted for Bush because of a lot of the same reason she did. I have a lot of views that agree with the democrat party. Like the Sad America author, I agree that gays/lesbians have the right to be married. I also agree that Rich people aren't evil. She states in this article "I know two millionaires personally. Both are entrepreneurs who took big risks and worked their backsides off for years to get were they are. Given that Kerry is married to a billionaire, this seemed expecially hypocritical". I completely agree with this statement. I have friends who's parents have taken big risks as entrepreneurs to become very sucessful finacially. So I guess Bush allows these rich people to keep more of their earned money than Kerry would have. I think this is a good thing, being that most of them worked hard for it. I also strongly agree with where she talks about how some Kerry voters were "imature, needlesly vulgar and obnoxious". This turned me off towards voting for Kerry. To be honest, I wasn't really sure who I was going to vote for till pretty much the day of the election. I was kind of waiting for the democrat party to give me a really good reason to vote for them because I found a lot of my beliefs where the same as that of the democrat party. Like the author of this article, I found no good reason to vote for Kerry. I found that voting for Bush allowed me to know we'd have a president who had values and knew where he stood on issues. So yeah I guess I am in a lot of agreement with the content of this article.

Sad American

After reading the sad american I believed more and more of the things she said. I would have liked to vote for Kerry but many things that were stated about him just made me think huh? Some of the strong points in this blog were what she mentioned about gay people and how she wasn't voting against gays but labeled as so she was, also when she mentioned Kerry's points on the war and how she didn't know what they really are. I didn't really feel Kerry gave a strong opinion of what he would do about the war, and agree with the sad american. The more I read the blog the more things I agreed with, and I hope that next term around there will be a president that can be supported whole heartedly not the lesser of two evils.

A Sad American

so id first like to say, before revealiing whether im a democrat or republican, that the girl who wrote sad american had a VERY strong arguement. im not VERY into politics, and i didnt follow everything very closely this election, but i did vote kerry/edwards. to be honest, i didnt know much of anything. still to this day, after doing some research, im still a little dusty on which party holds what views. anyways, being a young white female, like the sad american, i felt for what she was saying. i think the candidtates focused a lot on the swing states, which is understandable, but didnt even try to win over the other states. this not being a good example but Kerry didnt even try to go and win over Texas, because he assumed that he had absolutely no chance of winning their votes. (which he didnt but you get the picture) i think sad americans arguement was really strong and included a lot of pathos. she made such good points that being one of the people who wasnt leaning strongly to either side, she could have dragged me with her to vote for Bush. because im not a hard-core democrat, i honestly wouldnt know how to persuade a bush-leaning voter to vote for Kerry. thats all i got for now, its hard to put the thoughts into words....

TALK ABOUT LIFE

You want to know why every blog I always talking about somthing that has somthing to do with life. hey I'm living ain't I and I'm in this lifetime.
That was just a opener the real thing that I want to discuss is the issue of knowing who yuo as person in the society. some people go there whole life without knowing the person who they are, some find out even before they become an adult. this is kind of personal to me but I find came to terms with the person I am.

The thing about it I am not one thing but a whole lot of life lessons wrap in to form a single ball of things to come. I can nice, I can be nice I can be angry I can be happy I can be sad no one thing defies the person I AM INSIDE

sad american thing and a little more

so its really weird that this is something we are blogging about because just on sunday when i was at home my mom and i were talking about how my grandpa has ALWAYS voted democratic no matter what and how the democratic party had lost its "core values" and that is exactly what this blog says in the beginning then it goes on to talk about other stuff but it touches on this. my mom stayed home from work for a WEEK to watch all this election stuff because she is just really into it i guess and she was telling me all this stuff she learned, she says that the democratic party used to be all about the working class, equality and Unions and now if you look where most of the democratic party votes came from they were all along the west and east coast, people think that this might have happened because the democratic party has switched its values into interest groups (gay/lesbian groups, hollywood (west coast), American Civil Liberties Union and micheal moore lol) i kinda think that this is true because if you look at all the people that went out of their way to voice their opinions you will see that it was all hollywood stars and you didnt see very many if any hollywood stars that stood up for bush.. oh yeah and i was watching some news channel and they were saying how the biggest change in the media this election was the huge use of BLOGS!!! it made me laugh because before this class i had never heard of a blog and now they are saying that it possible had the largest media impact this election! wow its kinda cool i think well i might add onto this later but its been a long night, see you all on friday!

The War in Iraq..what are we fighting?

I am trying to find the link to the website this came from:

US War Crimes in Fallujah

11/05/2004 19:56

Bush's butchers blast limbs off baby. PRAVDA.Ru presents letter from the people of Fallujah - the side of the story that George Bush forgot to tell his people.
George Bush didn't waste any time in getting stuck in to his second term as President of the USA, after receiving a firm pat on the back from his electorate - or rather, just over half of it. On day one, US aircraft strafed the house of an "insurgent", a three-year-old boy, whose left leg was amputated. Freedom and democracy, winning hearts and minds by slaughtering defenceless kids.
George Bush likes to speak about freedom and democracy and likes to claim that most Iraqis back his murderous invasion force. However, here we present the Message from the People of Fallujah delivered to the UNO on October 31st.

"IT IS more than evident that US forces are committing daily acts of genocide in Iraq. As we write, these crimes are being perpetrated against the city of Fallujah.
US war planes are launching their most powerful bombs against the civilian population, killing and wounding hundreds of innocent people. Their tanks are pounding the city with heavy artillery.
As you know, there is no military presence in the city. There have been no actions by the resistance in Fallujah in the last few weeks because negotiations are in progress between representatives of the city and the Allawi government.
The new bombardment by the US has begun while the people are fasting during the celebration of Ramadan. Now many of them are trapped in the ruins of their homes and cut off from any outside assistance.
On the night of 13 October a single US bombardment destroyed 50 houses and their inhabitants. Is this a crime of genocide or a lesson about US democracy? The US is committing acts of terror against the people of Fallujah for only one reason: to force them to accept the occupation.
Your Excellency and the whole world know that the US and their allies have destroyed our country on the pretext of the threat of weapons of mass destruction.
Now, after their own mass destruction and the killing of thousands of civilians, they have admitted that they have not found any.
But they have said nothing about the crimes they have committed. The whole world is silent, and even the killing of Iraqi civilians is not condemned.
Will the US be paying compensation, as it made Iraq do after the 1991 Gulf War?
We know that we live in a world of double standards. In Fallujah the US has created a new and shadowy target "Abu Musab al-Zarqawi".
Al-Zarqawi is a new excuse to justify the USAs criminal actions. A year has passed since this new excuse was dreamed up, and every time they attack homes, mosques and restaurants, killing women and children, they say: "We have launched a successful operation against al-Zarqawi."
They will never say they have killed him, because he does not exist. The people of Fallujah assure you that this person is not in the city, nor probably anywhere else in Iraq.
Many times the people of Fallujah have asked that if anyone sees al-Zarqawi they should kill him. We know now that he is nothing but a phantom created by the US.
Our representatives have repeatedly denounced kidnapping and killing of civilians. We have nothing to do with any group that acts in an inhumane manner.
We call on you and the leaders of the world to exert the greatest pressure on the Bush administration to end its crimes against Fallujah and pull its army back from the city.
When they left a while ago, the city had peace and tranquility. There was no disorder in the city. The civil administration here functioned well, despite the lack of resources.
Our offence is simply that we did not welcome the forces of occupation. This is our right according to UN Charter, according to international law and according to the norms of humanity.
It is very urgent that you, along with other world leaders, intervene immediately to prevent another massacre. We have tried to contact UN representatives in Iraq to ask them to do this but, as you know, they are sealed off in the maximum security Green Zone in Baghdad and we are not allowed access to them.
We want the UN to take a stand on the situation in Fallujah.
Best wishes, in the name of the people of Fallujah, the Shura Council of Fallujah, the Trade Union Association, the Teachers Union, and the Council of Tribal Leaders "
Kassim Abdullsattar al-Jumaily: President of The Study Center of Human Rights & Democracy

On behalf of the people of Fallujah and for:
Al-Fallujah Shura Council
The Bar Association
The Teacher Union
Council of Tribes Leaders
The House of Fatwa and Religious Education

P.S. to the below post

P.S. This is not to say that I agree with everything she says..for example, I do not agree that the US should have gone to war with Iraq-I do not agree that it was the right thing to do...But her writing is convincing and shows she has thought about her topic deeply...

A Very Sad American

Well...this letter by A Very Sad American is written so professionally...and the writer seems to be very mature....I am neither a Democrat or a Republican, and I didnt vote for either Bush or Kerry because I am not old enough to vote yet! (Even if i was I would have had a terrible time choosing between the two because they both seem to be the same in the end..).
