Hey everyone, I just read the "It's a Big Fat Revolution" essay and I would characterizer her style and tone as straight forward. She seems to say exactly what she feels and doesn't really care the manor that it is said in. I think it is rhetorically effective because it is different and interesting. It's nice to read something away from typical informative essays. The article kept me interested but I guess that could also be because I have interest in obesity and have been researching and writing about the topic haha I think there is "fat hating" that happens in society. I guess I was particularly interested in the ways that being fat affects Lamm's life. She talks about how she feels like she should look but now finds that she is happy being her overweight self. But I feel like she thinks about it a lot and it does have negative affects on her life. I think this because of what she writes about all of the things that go through her mind. For example she says "but occasionally, when I look in the mirror and i see this body that is so different from my friends', so different from what i'm told it should be, i just want to hide away and not deal with it anymore". I think from the way society is, it is really hard to not have negative thoughts about your body if you are overweight or obese. I think it is great if she feels happy about her body and can overcome these ideas that society has of a perfect body but I am not sure if she can keep all of the negative thoughts about being overweight out of her head. I liked her straight forward type of writing, she gets her points across and lets you take them or leave them. It was interesting to read. I might have to comment more on this essay when I have more time. Anyways, see you in class tomorrow!

Wats good yall,
well lately i have been watching ESPN and there has been numerous incidents of sports players fighting with each other and even fans. last week during a nba basketball game between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons in Detroit Ron Artest a player for the pacers was near the crowd when a fan threw a water bottle at him and hit him in his face. Ron artest has a short fuse and that act set him off so he ran into the stands and starts to fight the fan and a great big rumble insues between the whole pacers team the pistons team and some fans. though this was a bad act i believe Ron Artest could have handled himself better but the fan had no right to throw anything at him. i think people have lost thier boundaries as fans heckling is ok but when u do something physically to a player and expect them just to allow it it is no good. this is wat i think what do you guys think are fans getting out of control??
Hello guys, I had came up with some do's and don’ts for this weekend. They are just my opinions and you don't have to follow them or read them. I just thought I can put these up because I can’t get any sleep.
Do’s
1. Eat
2. Hangout with family and friends
3. Get sleep
4. Spend time with your spouse if you have one (a whole lot of time)
5. Have fun and make the most of this weekend
Don’ts
1. Drink too much or at all
2. Smoke too much or at all
3. Get into trouble
4. Do anything bad
5. Get so caught up and forget to do HW
No, for real though have fun this weekend and be safe. I know I am about to eat a houseful of food and some, but yawl have a good weekend and have fun and make the most of it,
Hello class, first off I am going to tell you about what I plan to do this weekend and then let you know a little about the topic. Since I have a late class Wednesday and there are no late flights going out later than I want them I am leaving Thursday evening. I will be arriving into Chicago at like 2:00pm hopefully. The first thing I am going to do is visit some of my family (my great grandma, grandma, moms, and cousins). I am going to get so full that day. I am going to eat at like three different places, so don’t be to surprise if I come back ten pounds heavier than I was. After that day I plan to spend the rest of my time chilling and hanging out with friends. Okay enough of that I would like to talk about the title of my topic. “A Raisin In The Sun,” everyone knows that I will be going back to Chicago for thanksgiving and plan to make the best of it. Man, I am so happy to be going back to Chicago. I miss “Chi-Town” badly and can’t wait until I get there. I’ve been here in Minnesota for three months straight and never spent a full weekend in my hometown, but it seems as if I have been here for like three years or something. I really don’t have anything against this state but being here made me really appreciate Chicago even more than what I been appreciating it. I miss family, friends, and can’t forget the honey’s too. Minnesota is a nice state and everything, but being here really made me feel like a “Raisin In The Sun.” Some of those who aren’t form here might know what I’m talking about. Being in a new surrounding makes you feel like an outsider, I mean not knowing anything, until you find your place and I hope to find mine soon. Basically what I mean by that is I am not from this state and everybody acts totally different than people on Chicago. Me being me I don’t know how to react to it so I just be quiet. I mean I know how to get to know people but I just don’t go up to the person and say hi. Many people that I met have approach me that way. Hopefully you guys know what I mean.
I'm about to hop on a plane headed to Alabama (well, Memphis, TN really, where my mom will pick me up), but before I go, I want to express some concern about some of the recent content around here. The goal of good argumentation is to reach what philosopher Jürgen Habermas calls a "rational-critical consensus," or the most reasonable solution to a problem, as the authors of our textbook put it. What that means is this: Interlocutors (participants) in any given discussion need to make a sincere, considerate effort to understand the positions of those who do not agree with them and engage the positions thoughtfully and respectfully. Some of what's up here now is not doing this, a point which has already been discussed here, but one we clearly need to revisit.
So, here's what I'd like you to do before you click "Save" (or "Post" in the case of comments). Ask yourself: Are my words thoughtful, sincere, and respectful? Have I made a good-faith effort to understand the positions of the interlocutors who disagree with me? Could someone who disagrees with my position interpret my words as baiting? Have I represented my own position in a clear, reasonable, well-supported manner that invites a sincere, thoughtful, respectful response from the other participants in the discussion?
first of all, thanks to courtney for giving me this "bLoG idEa." my top ten QuOtEs::
(in no particular order)
1. "we all take paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere.
2. "dont take life too seriously because you cant come out of it alive.
3. never miss someone from your past because there is a reason they arent in ur future.
4. "Never give up on something you cant go a day without thinking about."
5. "be experimental. its better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission."
6. "if people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done."
7 - 10. "As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let us down probably will. You will have your heart broken, probably more than once, and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing so fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too hard, and love like you've never been hurt, because every 60 seconds you spend mad or upset is a minute of happiness that you'll never get back."
ENJOY!!!!!
alright...
so i am very annoyed with my research topic. eating a vegan diet for 3 months gave me uncomfortable gastro-intestinal problems (ill spare you all the gross details) and made me sooooooooo tired. however, i dont think im going to change my research question because it is suggested that you EASE into the vegan lifestyle... first starting with meat, then moving on to parts of the dairy group, then the rest of the dairy, and then the other forbidden foods should be limited little by little. i suppose if i had tapered off my animal-products consumption, it may have been different. so yeah.... im keeping it the same. (its still annoying though!) hope all had a good weekend, see you tomorrrow.
I'm surprised no one commented on those pictures...I thought they were pretty interesting...I'm sure Republicans would be angry though (i am not a Republican or a Democrat so it doesn't make a difference to me)...
I have a question that I would like to ask very one what is the difference between religion and spirituality. to me I feel that spirituality is more important than saying that you have religion in your life. I think that every one knows an older gentlemen or women that goes to church every sunday, but with the personallty that she potrays you could never tell the differences if she was reallybatting for tyhe other team or not.
This is what I feel that most people feel that religion really is I myself perfer to say that I am more spiritual than anything else. because I don't really go to church but I beleive in God and I try to follow his words the way I know how.
This is actually a question what do you feel is better being religious or spiritual.
I watched this movie and really enjoyed it...especially the part where they described the life of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh)...I was really glad to see non-Muslim producers portraying a correct image of Islam, instead of the ususal not-quite-right image in a lot of other movies I have seen about this religion. I think the fact that the producer is not a Muslim increases his credibility in a way because it shows he is not making a movie with a bias (as a Muslim producer might be accused of)..The film had some wonderful photography, especially of the mosques and palaces in various cities all over South West Asia, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. There were some things that bothered me though; little mistakes that to me seem as though they would be the easiest mistakes for a producer to avoid. For example, when they had a reenaction of people praying (at the time of the prophet), the actors were not even pretending to pray correctly. The movements they were preforming were quite obviously wrong (most any practicing Muslim-especially one who prays- could easily spot the mistakes, and I felt sad that they hadn't researched the Muslim prayer rituals which are simple-yet important- enough to get them correct.
Another example (which again seems like such a silly mistake) was when they had the 'scholars' in Baghdad writing ...they were writing from left to write which is not how arabic is written..Arabic is written from right to left, and to see these actors getting that wrong was just so weird. I was thinking, that is such a simple thing, why couldn't the producer have made sure that the actors were acting correctly? There were several other things also (the Muezzin was not a real muezzin; it was pretty obvious because he wasn't doing the call to prayer correctly-again, why couldn't they have gone to the trouble of finding an Imam from any local mosque who would do the job correctly?)...
But I have to admit the movie was good, and I enjoyed it immensly; the first part more than the second though. I highly recommend this movie for anyone interested in learning a little background information about Islam, without going into the practices/teachings of the religion itself. This movie was good because it did not focus on the teachings of Islam (so it doesn't make the audience feel like the producer is trying to convert you !), rather it focuses on the history of the religion, of the great empire of faith, and how Islam had and has such an influence on the West. Islam:Empire of faith

Hi Everyone!
Well I have a couple seconds and access to a computer so I thought I would blog quite to check in. So it looks like a blog topic was favorite movies or music. That's cool. I wonder what you guys are talking about in class right now? Things are going fine. I am off of observation finally and now have a little (not a lot) more freedom than before. I have become pretty close to a girl from Chicago and she is doing a good job keeping me company. Everyone thinks we look alike and they call us sisters. Anyways...I did this amazing obstacle in REC. today. It was so powerful it made me cry. This was my first time being off the 2nd floor since I had been here so I was excited. An obstacle was designed to represent our life line. It was roped off and had little birdies (the bad-mitten kind) spread all around and bowling pins and cones roped together. There were also some little bean toys that. WE had to be blind-folded and walk through the course by having a partner answer yes or no questions that we would ask to guide us through it. You didn't want to hit anything, because if you did you would get spun around one time or two. The birdies, pins, cones represented relapses in recovery and the little bean toys represented good things in life, like family and friends. You had to go about the course by asking your partner questions like, "can i go left? can I go right, is something good by me?" They would then answer yes or no. I didn't get all the way through the course because for some reason it had too strong of an affect on me and I had to stop. It was fun though. Weather has sucked and that has not made me happy. I miss everyone and everything back home so much. I just want to get out of here. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and I am thinking of all of you! Good Turkey hunting!
Tonna
I was just thinking about movie that i liked for my top ten list and i had Ocean 11 on it and for those of you who havent seen it it is a movie about a bunch of guys that rob a casino in Vegas, actually 3 casinos. The reason i am talking about this is because there is a sequal to this movie coming out on the December 10 and i cant wait to see it. I am hopeing it is as good as the orginal one because that was a great movie in my book.
These are ten movies that i really like they might not be my top ten of all time or in the right order but they are all great movies
1. Gone in 60 Seconds
2. Varsity Blues
3. Friday Night Lights
4. The Fast and the Furious
5. 2 Fast 2 Furious
6. Blue Collar Comendy Tour
7. The Girl Next Door (This one has a really hot girl in it)
8. Oceans 11
9. Anchorman
10. Revenge of the Nerds (i know these are kindof weird but they are cool)
These are all great movies if you havent seen one of them i would suggest you go see it.
Friday Night Lights is a movie that has just came out recently. It is a movie about a high school football team in Texas. I dont really want to spoil the movie for those of you who havent seen it so i wont tell too much about it. The team is really good, but have some troubles throughout the season. If you liked Varsity Blues this is definetly a movie that you need to see. I really enjoyed it, i have seen it 3 times and it still didnt get old.
hey, i guess this post is kinda directed towards Abby, but i was watching the news last night and on channel 11 they did a special on how men and women shop differently, i am not sure if your paper just focuses on just different body types or different sexes, but if it compares men and women this might help you, just thought i would let you know
Last night I was going through the channels and I saw a commerical for a segment on how the U spends half a million dollars on these fancy chairs and no one knows where they are. So the news team came out and investigated it. The funny thing about it is that I have a friend who was walking around the library on the west bank and came across a bunch of these chairs. The chairs really aren't missing they are just hidding. On another fancy tid bit, I guess the U spends a quater of a million dollars on ICE! Ok well let me know if anyone knows anything else about this.
Also think about this...
"...defining the adversary as 'terror' made it easier [for the Bush administration] to deflect public attention from evidence suggesting that it was America's quasi-imperial role that was provoking resistance-and would continue to do so. In truth, as Daniel Pipes has correctly noted, terror is a tactic, not an enemy 1. But by insisting that its quarrel was with terror-rather than, for example, with radical Islam- the United States obscurred the political roots of the confrontation. U.S officials dismissed as irrelevant the fact that Osama bin Laden's actions (however contemptible) represented an expression of strongly held convictions: a deep seated resentment of the U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf and a determination to remove that presence by whatever means necessary 2." 3
1 Daniel Pipes, "What Bush Got Right-and Wrong," Jerusalem Post, September 26, 2001..
2 In a videotape released on October 7,2001, Osama bin Laden vowed to continue his war against the United States until "all the army of infidels depart the land of Muhammad," referring to the U.S military pesence in Saudi Arabia; "Bin Laden's Statement: "The Sword Fell," New York Times, October 8, 2001, p. B7.
3 2 Andrew J. Bacevich, "American Empire: The Realities and Consequences Of U.S. Diplomacy," Harvard University Press, 2003, Ch.8, p. 231.
Think about this statement....
"Terror...was not the source of opposition to the United States, but only one especially malignant expression of that opposition. Given the record of the previous decade...the pursuit of ever-greater openness was likely to encounter further resistance, if not from Islamic radicals, then from other states or movements or individuals persuaded (not without reason) that globalization "was just a shorthand for a new world dominated by Americans"1 and unhappy with that prospect."2

2 Andrew J. Bacevich, "American Empire: The Realities and Consequences Of U.S. Diplomacy," Harvard University Press, 2003, Ch. 8, p. 240.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned The Ring in their lists of top ten movies...Personally, I think it's one of the best horror movies EVER!
Democrats=Republicans
Yes, I'm serious! I've been reading this book on American foreign policy after the Cold War called : American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of U.S. Diplomacy by Andrew J. Bacevich....there is this really convincing chapter called "Different Drummers, Same Drum" and basically he is arguing that even though democrat and republican Presidents are thought of as having very different stances on issues, and very different foreign policies, they are actually identical!!!
This chapter strengthened my original position (that both Kerry and Bush are the same, and America would live the same fate under each)..and for anyone who doubts this position I highly recommend reading "Different Drummers, Same Drum" in Andrew J. Bacevich's American Empire...
Hooray for Bacevich!!

I think it's an good topic because it's something almost everyone would have a feeling on one way or the other. Personally I can say that from my experience evolution has been very implicitly taught and used in science curriculum and I think sometimes it goes under students noses without them even realizing it. For instance, when ppl talk about the age of the Earth the numbers they're using probably don't go with the creation theory and by default are most likely being drawn from the "big bang theory." I consider myself a Christian, but personally I tend to dissociate myself from organized religions sometimes, I believe strictly what it says Christ 'said' in the bible and that's how I 'try' to live my life. I think there's more important things to be said about the bible than debating the fine points from Genesis. My philosophy is that I think of the Universe as a giant and complex factory of sorts that is self maintaining and self sustaining. God created the equipment, assembled it, but then he plugged it all in and let it go. So that's my philosophy and I agree with Romisha that by not believing in "God" and teaching "Evolution" that itself is its own sort of a religion, and religion shouldn't be taught in public schools unless it's a special elective course.

HI!
This is Tonna. This is my third day of treatment and it is going okay. Still getting into the swing of things. It helps that I have been in treatment before because a lot of the rules are kind of the same. I hope everyone is getting anxious for Thanksgiving break, as I know many get to go home and visit family. I unfortunently do not, but It will be fine. It is for the best that I am here. I have met some great people and it seems that things will go well. I better go I just wanted to quick say hello, and let you guys know I am thinking of you!
Here is my address if anyone wants it!
[This is Clancy: I cut the address out and am going to send it to the class over email. I hope that's okay; I didn't want any strangers to be able to get in touch with you there, palm tree.]

hello all,
although i know that many people in the class are fed up with peer editing, i would like to address a positive aspect of it. yes, we all have (at one point or another) had a partner that didnt do SQUAT, and perhaps our papers have suffered as a result of this, but i am not going to lie, it was nice to read other peoples work. i read meg, donte, and ben's papers thusfar, and i can honestly say i enjoyed reading them. no...i didnt necessarily enjoy circling mistakes and writing comments and the like...however, i learned a lot about oil drilling (meg), environmental racism (donte) and hybrid cars (ben). sometimes i forget that issues like that exist, and its nice to read about what other people deem as imprtant life issues that we all face dailiy.
Sooo... I am trying to look for classes I can take next semester, and I can't find any that are something that I want to study. I looked for writing classes, but they all have a weird prereq that I don't understand. I looked for Economics classes, but I am only a Junior in HighSchool, and you can't take ECON classes when you are a junior. I looked for Accounting and Finance classes, but all of them are 3xxx to 4xxx classes, and you have to have 60+ credits to take these classes, because they teach them only at the Carlson School of Managment. This is sooooo stressful!
wuz up yall well i was looking at this movie trailer website and i saw a trailer for this movie called white noise. it is about a new phenomena which is called electronic voice phenomena. this is the practice of using a special voice recorder to hear the voices of the dead go to this web site www.aaevp.com this stuff is crazy. these scientists have been to numerous haunted houses and different paranormal places and have had the recorder on and ask the room questions and after the questions you can hear a voice distinctly answer the question. check this out it is crazy!!!!!
Now I completely feel you on your reply, but let's be realistic, your friends that you have now, I am sure that you all have not been just peachy keen for however long you all have been friends, am I right? So when you say that never forgive a person who killed once, I'm not Jesus so I don't have to forgive him for that because to kill someone is a deadly sin, but for a practical joke that went wrong to receive the same recoil is not completely necessary, in my opinion. We are all new to each other and mistakes are going to happen, believe me. I almost lost one of my best friends over the mistake of not knowing a boundary, but we cleared it up and are now closer than ever so think of what is being effected before you burn bridges is the advice of king james.
What to do
What am i finna do
When all i think of is u
Hoping you feel this too
No matter how long its been
Love is like a game u cant win
Damn why cant i be real
And tell her how i feel
When i say somthing i cut it off
Cause i dont want to seem soft
But sometimes i slip
and the softest thing from my lips
Is the skin above your hips
Your kisses are sweet as milk
And your hair feels like silk
Im confused bout one thing
When u speak how do u get angels to sing??
With you i lose all of my fears
Damn i want to be wit you for years.
Thanx for the posts and i have been writing poems for a long time sine i was in seventh grade but i never told anyone cause i did not want to seem "soft" but i dont care anymore here is another one
the one
Late at night when the night is done
I sit there and think of the one
the one who fills my heart with joy
To her my heart is bound
cause she beautiful and her booty is round
when you call me my heart halts
i almost die and its all your fault
but if i died in that instant it would be cool
cause the last voice i heard was u
here is another one and there is a million more where that came from hahaha
hmmmm... to me its hard to trust new people especially when u are in a new place. but apologies can only go too far and convicts can kill people and say sorry but the person is not forgiven for it so i dunno for me do me wrong once the person will not get the chance to do it again at all.
I know everyone out there has heard about that new movie starring Sara Michelle Gellar, and some of you still haven't seen it so I'm not going to give a review, but a little information to help you understand the movie. I also have a question for you all to think about. Now in China, it is legend that if someone dies in a fury or through rage, that spirit remains in the place where it was killed and never leaves. Now thats the help for the movie if you all were planning to see it and now here's my question: If you did something to a new friend that was wrong, but you apologized and it has been over three weeks, how long would you expect that grudge held by your friend to be?
I think that the viewpoint in the article titled 'The Monster that is High School' was extreme. I know several jocks, cheerleaders, preps and the rest of the 'popular kids.' They are not let off the hook because of who they are. The reason that they get coverage is because they do something. Rather than just sitting and complaining, they are involved in the school with sports and clubs. The arguement that the author brings up about cliques being exclusive is true. The author is taking an extreme stance of the topic, perhaps so much that the argument is ineffective. Instead of ranting at the groups he dislikes and beating them up and threatening them with knives he should try to be more peaceful. The fact that he considered shooting people seriously hurts his credibility. Also, where did he get the idea that these popular groups are outside the law. His article could be convincing or more intriguing if he put some efffort to persuade and inform others instead if venting his personal feelings.
Hi everyone~
I just wanted to let anyone who is interested, that I am not going to be coming back to class this semester. As most of you know, I have anorexia. It has gotten pretty bad and after numerous treatments, I am off to the last straw. EARLY Monday morning I am going to residential treatment about 5.5 hours away. I will live there for 45-90 days. It could be longer, but my family and I are not anticipating that. I am not sure what things are going to be like, but I am going to be spending a tremendous amount of time on the mental, emotional aspect of the disease. It is a progress by progress situation. Most likely I will not be able to go home for Christmas, which I am really bummed about, and I don't know when I will be able to start second semester. I am not blogging about this to get sympathy, I just wanted everyone to know that I will miss our class and all of you. It has been a great class. We are all a good mix. I will possibly get access to my laptop and internet a couple days a week for school reasons, but I plan to try and blog since this is school related. I hope to keep in touch with most if not all of you! Feel free to email me since I can check that every so often, but if not no big deal. I want to wish everyone good luck in class and everything that you endure. Aim for the stars, but land on the moon! I hope to be in touch!!!!!

Okay I don't expect many people to know what I am talking about..Eid?? What's that? How do you pronounce it? First of all, I have to say I am very excited and looking forward to the weekend because it is one of the two holidays Muslims celebrate...Eid is the equivalent to Christmas for Christians..maybe that helps explain why I am so excited! Having Eid at the same time as trying to finish the bibliography (and other school work) is really annoying though....Eid though is not like Christmas in that Christmas is on a set day (Dec 25), while the date Eid falls on changes depending on the siting of the moon...Moon? What? Okay, I'll explain for anyone interested! Muslims have a month called Ramadan where we fast from sunrise to sunset every day for a month. This fasting helps us to feel grateful for the blessing of food, and helps us feel the pain and suffering that starving people feel, strengthing our awareness to what other fellow human beings are going through in the world. Ramadan is special in other ways too, and is about more than just fasting, but there are waaayy too many details for a blog post! I don't know if anyone noticed, but I have been fasting all month long, (thats why I didnt eat any candy when Clancy brought some to class a few weeks ago), and I am sad to say goodbye to Ramadan, the holy month (for Muslims). Now Eid is a holiday which marks the ending of the month of Ramadan, and the beginning of the new month called Shawal. Muslims follow the lunar calender which depends on the moon, and so the length of the months differ each year according to the position of the moon. Okay I know that's a lot of info to keep track of all at once!! But I'm just really happy because now its Eid, which means partying, candy, presents and FUN!! So yayay! C ya on Wednesday everyone (I wont be here Monday)....Oh by the way, I wonder if that guy Chris would like to debate the issue of me celebrating Eid instead of "acclimating" my traditions to those of America!!!!!!!!!! looooool
Wow! That is my first reaction to the blog post of A Sad American. I am not going to lie or try to hide the fact that I did vote for Kerry. However; I am in a slight sense relieved that he didn't win the election. As I've said before, I absolutely hate getting involved in political issues but I chose to vote and become involved because I believe we should exercise the rights that people fought hard for us to have. I was one of those many people who went into the polls that day with a 'wish-washy' feel on who they really genuinely wanted to support and vote for. I went back and forth and quite honestly, do not know exactly why I voted for Kerry. Just as Sad American, I view myself as more of a liberal and would have liked to see a Democrat win the election but not necessarily John Kerry. I completely agree with the reasons why Kerry didn't get the vote from Sad American and I think it is 100% okay for her to have voted for Bush without actually supporting Bush's ideas. I wish I would have read that blog earlier because I felt the same way in my mind where I didn't really personally like either candidate, and actually contemplated writing in myself or someone else, and I feel Sad American made a great deal of sense when explaining how voters like "us" felt in the election process. I agree it is better to have someone running your country who actually stands behind their words and follows through with their plans, even if I don't completely agree with their specific ideas on all things. I hope more people get the chance to read Sad American's blog so they can also make some sense of why they felt the way they did about their 'wishy-washy' vote decision like I did. Finally, I have found something that involves the election and politics that I actually enjoyed reading.
Here are the examples from class today:
A sound analogy (at least I think so):
Writing is like basketball.
The more essays you write, the more effective, persuasive ones you'll write, just as the more hoops you shoot, the more times you'll get the ball in the basket.
The underlying cause/effect claim being made here is: The time and energy you devote to a given endeavor causes you to become better and more successful at it (also possibly a law-of-averages claim). PLEASE NOTE: I think this is a sound analogy, based primarily on my experience as a writer and as a teacher of writing. Not everyone agrees, though. Some people might argue that writing is a natural talent that one is either born with or not and call my analogy a false analogy, making the counter-analogy that good writing is like eye color: Writing talent is a natural attribute just as having green eyes is a natural attribute. Fair enough...but I happen to think that particular analogy is poppycock.
Now for what canoeguy808 would argue is a false analogy:
The job market is like a field of lilies.
If you go into the field and pick 100 lilies, then cart them over to a field five miles away, you reduce the number of lilies in that field, just as if you pick 100 IT jobs and outsource them to India, there will be fewer jobs in that market.
HOWEVER, Canoeguy808 is arguing that the job market is not like a field of lilies, that the analogy is false and outsourcing some jobs can, in fact, create even more jobs (so you end up with a net job gain). (He'll also, of course, be providing evidence to support this claim, and maybe a counter-analogy? Canoeguy808, what would be a more appropriate analogy for what the job market is like and what outsourcing's effect on the market is?)
Hey everyone. I read sad america and I found I agreed with a lot of what she said. I voted for Bush because of a lot of the same reason she did. I have a lot of views that agree with the democrat party. Like the Sad America author, I agree that gays/lesbians have the right to be married. I also agree that Rich people aren't evil. She states in this article "I know two millionaires personally. Both are entrepreneurs who took big risks and worked their backsides off for years to get were they are. Given that Kerry is married to a billionaire, this seemed expecially hypocritical". I completely agree with this statement. I have friends who's parents have taken big risks as entrepreneurs to become very sucessful finacially. So I guess Bush allows these rich people to keep more of their earned money than Kerry would have. I think this is a good thing, being that most of them worked hard for it. I also strongly agree with where she talks about how some Kerry voters were "imature, needlesly vulgar and obnoxious". This turned me off towards voting for Kerry. To be honest, I wasn't really sure who I was going to vote for till pretty much the day of the election. I was kind of waiting for the democrat party to give me a really good reason to vote for them because I found a lot of my beliefs where the same as that of the democrat party. Like the author of this article, I found no good reason to vote for Kerry. I found that voting for Bush allowed me to know we'd have a president who had values and knew where he stood on issues. So yeah I guess I am in a lot of agreement with the content of this article.
After reading the sad american I believed more and more of the things she said. I would have liked to vote for Kerry but many things that were stated about him just made me think huh? Some of the strong points in this blog were what she mentioned about gay people and how she wasn't voting against gays but labeled as so she was, also when she mentioned Kerry's points on the war and how she didn't know what they really are. I didn't really feel Kerry gave a strong opinion of what he would do about the war, and agree with the sad american. The more I read the blog the more things I agreed with, and I hope that next term around there will be a president that can be supported whole heartedly not the lesser of two evils.
i jus recieved an email and it said that The president is going to try to pass a bill next year for an universial draft in which all MEN and WOMEN between the ages of 18-26 will be put into a military draft. normally if u are in college you were exempt but the president is now going to implemint the new law that says even college kids have to go to military service if drafted. there were links tooo. go to this website http://thomas.loc.gov and enter HR 163 and search and the bill will come up. if this is implimented would u want to go to service hit me back
BIG Willie

im just wondering how this is any feed back would be good
so id first like to say, before revealiing whether im a democrat or republican, that the girl who wrote sad american had a VERY strong arguement. im not VERY into politics, and i didnt follow everything very closely this election, but i did vote kerry/edwards. to be honest, i didnt know much of anything. still to this day, after doing some research, im still a little dusty on which party holds what views. anyways, being a young white female, like the sad american, i felt for what she was saying. i think the candidtates focused a lot on the swing states, which is understandable, but didnt even try to win over the other states. this not being a good example but Kerry didnt even try to go and win over Texas, because he assumed that he had absolutely no chance of winning their votes. (which he didnt but you get the picture) i think sad americans arguement was really strong and included a lot of pathos. she made such good points that being one of the people who wasnt leaning strongly to either side, she could have dragged me with her to vote for Bush. because im not a hard-core democrat, i honestly wouldnt know how to persuade a bush-leaning voter to vote for Kerry. thats all i got for now, its hard to put the thoughts into words....
You want to know why every blog I always talking about somthing that has somthing to do with life. hey I'm living ain't I and I'm in this lifetime.
That was just a opener the real thing that I want to discuss is the issue of knowing who yuo as person in the society. some people go there whole life without knowing the person who they are, some find out even before they become an adult. this is kind of personal to me but I find came to terms with the person I am.
The thing about it I am not one thing but a whole lot of life lessons wrap in to form a single ball of things to come. I can nice, I can be nice I can be angry I can be happy I can be sad no one thing defies the person I AM INSIDE
so its really weird that this is something we are blogging about because just on sunday when i was at home my mom and i were talking about how my grandpa has ALWAYS voted democratic no matter what and how the democratic party had lost its "core values" and that is exactly what this blog says in the beginning then it goes on to talk about other stuff but it touches on this. my mom stayed home from work for a WEEK to watch all this election stuff because she is just really into it i guess and she was telling me all this stuff she learned, she says that the democratic party used to be all about the working class, equality and Unions and now if you look where most of the democratic party votes came from they were all along the west and east coast, people think that this might have happened because the democratic party has switched its values into interest groups (gay/lesbian groups, hollywood (west coast), American Civil Liberties Union and micheal moore lol) i kinda think that this is true because if you look at all the people that went out of their way to voice their opinions you will see that it was all hollywood stars and you didnt see very many if any hollywood stars that stood up for bush.. oh yeah and i was watching some news channel and they were saying how the biggest change in the media this election was the huge use of BLOGS!!! it made me laugh because before this class i had never heard of a blog and now they are saying that it possible had the largest media impact this election! wow its kinda cool i think well i might add onto this later but its been a long night, see you all on friday!
I am trying to find the link to the website this came from:
US War Crimes in Fallujah
11/05/2004 19:56
Bush's butchers blast limbs off baby. PRAVDA.Ru presents letter from the people of Fallujah - the side of the story that George Bush forgot to tell his people.
George Bush didn't waste any time in getting stuck in to his second term as President of the USA, after receiving a firm pat on the back from his electorate - or rather, just over half of it. On day one, US aircraft strafed the house of an "insurgent", a three-year-old boy, whose left leg was amputated. Freedom and democracy, winning hearts and minds by slaughtering defenceless kids.
George Bush likes to speak about freedom and democracy and likes to claim that most Iraqis back his murderous invasion force. However, here we present the Message from the People of Fallujah delivered to the UNO on October 31st.
"IT IS more than evident that US forces are committing daily acts of genocide in Iraq. As we write, these crimes are being perpetrated against the city of Fallujah.
US war planes are launching their most powerful bombs against the civilian population, killing and wounding hundreds of innocent people. Their tanks are pounding the city with heavy artillery.
As you know, there is no military presence in the city. There have been no actions by the resistance in Fallujah in the last few weeks because negotiations are in progress between representatives of the city and the Allawi government.
The new bombardment by the US has begun while the people are fasting during the celebration of Ramadan. Now many of them are trapped in the ruins of their homes and cut off from any outside assistance.
On the night of 13 October a single US bombardment destroyed 50 houses and their inhabitants. Is this a crime of genocide or a lesson about US democracy? The US is committing acts of terror against the people of Fallujah for only one reason: to force them to accept the occupation.
Your Excellency and the whole world know that the US and their allies have destroyed our country on the pretext of the threat of weapons of mass destruction.
Now, after their own mass destruction and the killing of thousands of civilians, they have admitted that they have not found any.
But they have said nothing about the crimes they have committed. The whole world is silent, and even the killing of Iraqi civilians is not condemned.
Will the US be paying compensation, as it made Iraq do after the 1991 Gulf War?
We know that we live in a world of double standards. In Fallujah the US has created a new and shadowy target "Abu Musab al-Zarqawi".
Al-Zarqawi is a new excuse to justify the USAs criminal actions. A year has passed since this new excuse was dreamed up, and every time they attack homes, mosques and restaurants, killing women and children, they say: "We have launched a successful operation against al-Zarqawi."
They will never say they have killed him, because he does not exist. The people of Fallujah assure you that this person is not in the city, nor probably anywhere else in Iraq.
Many times the people of Fallujah have asked that if anyone sees al-Zarqawi they should kill him. We know now that he is nothing but a phantom created by the US.
Our representatives have repeatedly denounced kidnapping and killing of civilians. We have nothing to do with any group that acts in an inhumane manner.
We call on you and the leaders of the world to exert the greatest pressure on the Bush administration to end its crimes against Fallujah and pull its army back from the city.
When they left a while ago, the city had peace and tranquility. There was no disorder in the city. The civil administration here functioned well, despite the lack of resources.
Our offence is simply that we did not welcome the forces of occupation. This is our right according to UN Charter, according to international law and according to the norms of humanity.
It is very urgent that you, along with other world leaders, intervene immediately to prevent another massacre. We have tried to contact UN representatives in Iraq to ask them to do this but, as you know, they are sealed off in the maximum security Green Zone in Baghdad and we are not allowed access to them.
We want the UN to take a stand on the situation in Fallujah.
Best wishes, in the name of the people of Fallujah, the Shura Council of Fallujah, the Trade Union Association, the Teachers Union, and the Council of Tribal Leaders "

P.S. This is not to say that I agree with everything she says..for example, I do not agree that the US should have gone to war with Iraq-I do not agree that it was the right thing to do...But her writing is convincing and shows she has thought about her topic deeply...
Well...this letter by A Very Sad American is written so professionally...and the writer seems to be very mature....I am neither a Democrat or a Republican, and I didnt vote for either Bush or Kerry because I am not old enough to vote yet! (Even if i was I would have had a terrible time choosing between the two because they both seem to be the same in the end..)..so I guess I'll answer a few questions from each of the two given in the post assignment..
Some of the strongest points:
The one where she is saying that the Democratic party should stop bad-mouthing Bush really caught my attention...its true that the Democrats insulted Bush a lot in their campaign, and I really don't think that insulting your opponent will get you more votes...I think that the bad-mouthing just made Kerry look bad...he appears vulgar, crude, low etc.. and most of all desperate...instead of emphasizing the good things that he plans to do for America, he insults Bush !?...hmmm
Another point she makes which I felt was pretty strong was her description of how the democratic party "demoniz[es] the rich"...she made some good points there to support what she was saying...especially by using herself as an example of someone who is working hard, hoping to become well-off...I think so many people could relate to this...
Has the letter by A Very Sad American taught me about argumentation? Yes, it has... I feel that the letter is a wonderful demonstration of just stating your claim and then supporting it with examples...like she says: "You didn't give me clear positions on the issues"....she then backs this claim up with examples in which the democratic party failed to give clear positions: "I still don't understand Kerry's position on Iraq. I know he voted for the IWR, but then he voted against the $87 billion." and "He said that we must finish the job, but he also said it was the wrong war at the wrong place and the wrong time."
I think these are great, specific examples with which she supported her claim that the democratic party was taking confused positions.
I feel the writer of this letter has excellent command of the art of "writing to convince and persuade"....I certainly benefitted from this letter, and I am sure others can too ....
What is it with this weather? This is so rediculous. I for one never feel awake and I never sleep anymore. At 5pm it looks disgusting outside and i feel so tired that I cannot motivate myself to do anything. Around 11pm I start to wake up again because I have already been awake for so long. This is not good for anything. I can hardly concentrate on homework anymore, let alone everything else going on. This isn't like me, because I am losing track of the days and I NEVER do that. Am I the only one being affected by this time change? I do have seasonal depression, so that could decrease my mood a little, but i have talked to many people and they feel the same way. I am sorry this is so bland, but I could not do hw at this time (AGAIN)! If anyone else feels like this or has advice for me to get around it, since it will only get worse, please let me know! Thanks and let the sun shine in!!!
everybody in the world feels that they should be on their own because how the world is actually perceived in the eyes of different people. IO look at the world as an never ending struggle between temptaiton in our society it makes me want know why is there always a ying and a yang for every thing that is done in the world today, why can't the world be as simple as 1,2,3 this not a bad thing it is just a statement knowing what you actually want out of this life that we are living in.
but I guess as the old saying goes with out struggle their is no progress, true

Hybrid Cars. Bradley Berman. 2002. 6 Nov. 2004.
First of all a little background of this website. The editor Bradley Berman bought a new hybrid Civic in the fall of 2002 and he noticed how much these vehicles are going to save on the cost of gas to him. He wanted to put together a site promoting hybrid cars so this that is what this site is all about. I believe that this is a creditable source because I have checked some of the information on other websites that I am using and it seems to be correct.
The main point that they made about using hybrid cars instead of regular cars was the fact that our dependence on foreign oil is really high and the fact that we spend 1/3rd of our three hundred billion dollar defense budget on making sure that we get this oil. The United States uses 8 million barrels of oil in a day this costs two hundred thousand dollars a minute. Another big point he made as a good reason to buy a hybrid car was the fact that you can get up to a two thousand dollar tax deduction for buying a new hybrid car, and if you are in Colorado you can get a three thousand dollar tax deduction. Just to show how much gas you can save in a year by driving a hybrid car compared to a regular car here is some information on a 2003 Honda Civic. The regular Honda Civic in 2003 used 370 gallons of gas figuring twelve thousand five hundred miles a year and it produces seven thousand one hundred and seventy-six pounds of carbon dioxide. The hybrid version uses 263 gallons of gas a year based on twelve thousand five hundred miles a year and produces five thousand eighty nine pounds of carbon dioxide. This just shows that you can save a lot of money on gas driving a hybrid and also it is a lot better for the environment.
The first car to be released to the public was the Honda Insight, which was released in 1999 with a EPA mileage rating of 61 mpg city and 70 mpg highway. This car was a two door. The first four-door car was released a year later in 2000, and this was the Toyota Prius. The first SUV to be released as a hybrid was the Ford Escape hybrid, this was just released this year and they will only make three to four thousand of them for 2004. They will finish the twenty thousand car production run for 2005. There are many other companies planning hybrid SUV out there since the Escape was released. Lexus is planning on releasing an SUV in February 2005 Toyota is also going to release a hybrid SUV. Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Honda Pilot, and Saturn VUE all have hybrid versions in the making. The first minivan to be released as a hybrid will be the Toyota Sienna, which is planned to be released in late 2005.
I like that this information will help me in my paper just to introduce the topic and give some examples of cars that are hybrids.
I was watching the news last friday night (yes I was not out on the town, worked in the morning) and there was a segment on ch 5 about this old lady's house becoming unfit to live in. It appeared that she had 397 cats living in her house. Most of them were dead but about one hundred or so were still alive. I guess when the cat died she would put it in a garbage bag and leave it outside to rot. Aparently she let her son or daughter move in with her about three years ago and they brought about thirty cats with them. Since then the cats multipled beyond control. The thing that weirded me out the most was that she was a retired registered nurse. Knowing that wouldn't you assume that a dead cat is going to bring about disease?
I read the blog post of the sad american, and I agree on some of her reasons, yet I am somewhat negligent considering the other few of her reasons she listed. I agree that the Kerry/Edwards people made rich people look bad, which they shouldn't have. Me being from a financially well-secure family, I have to say that not all rich people like Bush. Not all rich people like Kerry either.
Also. I agree to the "bombs paid by my tax money" idea, which is what really happened, but I don't agree that we should have gone to war with anyone. And the fact that she doesn't care what other countries think of the Americans shows exactly how negligent and ignorant she is.
Thanks, Olzhas
I was not old enough to vote in this election, nor wouold I consider my opinion a god opinion because i have no idea what is going on when it comes to politics. I have learned more in the past two months about politics than I have in my whole school career. I do however know many people who voted for Bush and all of them were able to give me clear reasons for their choosing to vote for him. The one person that I know of that was voting for Kerry could only tell me that they were voting for him because they didn't want a draft if Bush was reelected. Was there actual evidence that Bush was going to bring back the draft? None that I found that were true.
I think that some really strong points that were made in this letter had to do with the emotions "sad American" was expressing. I liked that she was able to express her values in the letter, such as her believing in God and not appreciating the rude remarks expressed from people. I also give her credit for standing up for Bush in that he actually had values and plans for this world. Yes, maybe he didn't have the best, but they are HIS values. If people are mature enough they wouldn't make snood remarks about ones opinions. Yes, his opinions mattered more because he was running for President of the U.S. but that doesn't make it right. She didn't put Kerry down in her letter, she just expressed comments that have been plastered in the news for months. I also agree with where she stands in postion involving the taxes. It is just like she said, "the rich were persude as being evil." Most worked hard for their earnings and deserve every bit they get. I am like her and I want to work hard and have something to show for it when I am older. Not that money means everything, but it shows some. She believed in many things Kerry stood for like, Standing up for the little guy, but he didn't stand by his values enough to make it clear. I also liked her opinion about Kerry being married into money, and that he was somewhat a hipocrit on the taxes stand. Bush was really slammed throughout this election. It is hard to hear anyone receive comments such as those in the letter. "Bush getting off to pictures of children in Iraq!!!!" THAT IS HORRIBLE!! Just absolutley revolting and I cannot believe someone had the desency to project that opinion in public? I do agree with her that Kerry was harsh towards those that have different beliefs. Gays, for example. They don't deserve any less gratitude as anyone else. Also I have always wondered what Kerry would have done if he was in Bush's shoes after the 9/11 incident. Does he have any idea what that would be like??!!?? He should not put Bush down so badly since he was not the one making decisions. Yes, we all have our opinions and ideas of our own, but we were not there to make the decision. We do not know what it feels like to be under pressure like that. Can anyone imagine this?? That is all for now. Thanks for listening.....and reading:)
This blog was very intriguing because it gave you the chance to read what a voter who would have voted for someone else besides Bush felt like. "the Sad American" hit many hot topics, but the way that the author went about it was a little weird to me. She said why she didn't vote for Kerry ("You didn't give me clear positions on the issues, You didn't convince me that you would defend America against the threats of terrorism,You insulted my intelligence by the constant mantra of Kerry's service in Vietnam, etc."), but why she didn't want to vote for Bush also ("President Bush's close relationships to people like John Ashcroft scare me, Many Bush voters, like myself, were not happy to be voting for the President's re-election. Many Bush voters agonized over our decision and cast our vote in fear, trepidation, and trembling. Many of us would have given our left arms for a Democrat we could have supported"). So it was like she was riding the fence for a moment, but then she went to opening our eyes. She felt that Kerry had no concrete values. I wonder if that's how they all feel?...Let me know what you think? Hollatchabough!
Hey everyone, I'm posting about the results of the election. I just want to say that it doesn't suprize me that Kerry won Minnesota. Before the election there were Kerry supporters handing out stickers and posters that said Kerry Edwards on them. There were not that many Bush supporters handing out anything. I'm still not sure why that is. Anyways, I just want to comment on how the election is ran. I think that it went pretty smooth this time, expecially comparing it to the last presidential election. I think the elections are ran as fair as they can be. Where i voted there was a machine that counted the votes. I'm not sure if there is a machine everywhere counting the votes but if there is I think that is a very sufficent way of getting the closest count of votes. I am pretty sure if people hand counted the votes there would be a lot more mistakes than the machine would make. I also want to comment on how people reacted to Bush winning. I know a lot of my friends and people I live around here are Kerry supporters...and when they found out Bush won they acted kind of stupid. They would say things like "i'm moving to Canada". I think that once someone wins the presidential election people should try to remember that they have a say and who became president and they should be happy that they even have that right. They should also remember that they have it pretty good here in the US. So yeah I guess it kind of made me mad that a lot of people got so upset to say things like "I'm moving to Canada" when they have it pretty good here in the first place. Well anyways, I'll see you guys in class. Bye bye
Hey everyone! I haven't posted in sooo long! Since before Halloween. Mostly because my computer has been infected with a virus and i had to wait to go onto the internet until i could get that fixed. So here i am! I guess I could go back and post on all of the topics that i missed but instead i'll just write about the most current one which is the election. I must say that overall in my dorm most people are Kerry supporters. There are a few that stand out for Bush, but not too often do you find that. I can recall back to when i was watching the last presidential debate in the lounge at my dorm and every single person in the room was a Kerry supporter except one(i was undecided at the time). I ended up sitting by a friend of mine who was a Kerry fan and he was sitting there the whole time telling me about what Bush was doing wrong, etc. The Bush supporter who was also a friend of mine turned around and told me that if i was neutral then i should sit alone and just watch it for myself. Being that i know nothing about politics what so ever it was kind of nice to sit by someone who could at least inform me about what was going on. SO my friend the Kerry supporter started to be more neutral with me and point stuff out from both directions. After the election, I ended up talking with this friend of mine... the Kerry supporter and asking him how he felt about the election. He told me that although he was disappointed that Kerry didn't win, he knew it'd be ok with Bush because he had already been president for 4 years and well it'd only be another 4. The whole point i'm trying to make here is that even if you're on one side or the other, you should still be able to forget about it and just respect the fact that Bush is in charge now and it's not going to do any good to oppose it. It is true that instead of having a nation divided into Democrats and Republicans we need to all be one and stand by eachother. We can't go back and change the election, and obviously there were things in Bush that the country saw as being good qualities for a president. Alright that's all i have to say for now, i'll be posting again tonite to catch up!
After seeing the results of tuesday's election I was in shock. The nation was almost entirely red. The democrats had made few gains in the house or the senate. They lost the minority leader, Tom Daschle. My parents were contemplating moving to Canada. I figured I could survive four more years. I mean, how many countries can he invade in that time? two? three? There are only two left on the 'axis of evil.' However, after watching Bush's victory speech I was amazed that so many people would elect this man. While he was preaching about working together with the democrats and uniting the nation and doing hard work and thank you and praise God, I couldn't help noticing that he kept trying to cover a smirk. Did anyone else notice this? I am guessing that his advisors told him not to because otherwise he would have broken out. He was so cocky, smug and arrogant. On election night he called reporters to the White House and told them he was sure he would win. Anyway, See everybody in class tommorow.
As Pata and Ben said in their posts, the article by Peggy McIntosh really made me think about the "white advantages" that white people have...some advantages she lists were real eye openers, like the one about the skin colored bandages. I think this one caught everyone's attention because (for white people) buying band-aids is not an issue at all...in fact, I don't even think twice about the issue...ok I don't wanna just go on and on here so HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE...c ya on Monday (good luck with the annotations)...
i wanted to quickly post on the discussion we had during our last class involving the "invisble knapsack". i first read that article my senior year of high school in my sociology class. the high school i attended (edina high school in edina, mn) has a very low minority percentage. in fact, we did not meet state standards for public high school percent minority and had to have minorities bussed in from minnepolis to attend our school. basically, we spent several days discussing the invisible knapsack in that high school class, but did not get nearly as good of a conversation going as we had in our short discussion on monday. having a mixture of races present within a class setting makes everything so much more interesting. that is one of the main reasons why i chose the U of MN... getting to know persons of different backgrounds. everyone can bring different perspectives and experiences to the table and make for a very educational discussion. have a good weekend
I thought this artcle had a lot of good information, things that you never think about, like the color of bandages and stuff like that. Before i read this article i didnt even think about that kind of stuff. I guess i might notice this stuff more if i was of a different race. I have never had a problem with people looking at me like i am going to steal something or anything like that like we were talking about in class the other day. This article just opened my eyes to the kind of stuff that really happenes to people of other races that dont really happen to white people. Television also really is different also the way that most prime time tv shows that are on the main channels like ABC and NBC have mostly white people staring in them.
Yesterday afternoon, I wrote a letter of recommendation for a former student who was applying for an internship. He was an excellent student, and as I sat down to write, I collected my thoughts as to why I consider him a great student. After all, I knew why, but I had to explain it to a committee who would decide whether or not he'd get the internship. Then I realized that I was making an evaluation argument. I want to pass my thoughts on to you, not only because I'll be giving you an example of an evaluation argument, but because perhaps in doing so I'll be making explicit some tacit, unwritten rules that will help you out as you continue in college. In the letter, I wrote:
While in my class, he was remarkably conscientious, motivated, and professional in his approach to his work and appreciative of constructive criticism and feedback. He consistently set high standards for himself. These principles were not only reflected in his work, but were easily recognizable in his conduct vis-à-vis his classmates.
"X is a good Y because it meets criteria A, B, and C."
When I think of a good student, I think of the following criteria:
hey guys. i am going to be writing a response to tuesday's election. i think that since the president was re-elected, that is a good thing, (not trying to include my bias here, just pointing out the positive things), because i was watching the news, relating to the war of course, and they said something about how it was good that Bush was re-elected, because then they would be dealing with the same guy, and not someone else who they would have to get readjusted to. (i think now that this was in reference to the people of Iraq). Also, i was watching the Jay Leno show, and John McCain came on, and he said the main thing to be concerned about now that the election was over is to end the 'war on terrorism' and to unite the people of America together. (of course he said it much better, but i cant remember his exact words now). i think that is really good advice, becuase if we are going to get anything accomplished as a country, we have to stick together. i have something interesting that everyone should see. it is a theory of some guy( i cant remebeer now, but ill check on it, and post it as a comment here so you all can check it out.) it is really interesting.
After reading the article on male privilege it may seem odd but I thought that the white list was far more shocking and stunning than this one. I'm not sure if it's because I'm numb to male privilege or if I've just accepted it or if it's something else. I've been told all through grade school and even still today that things like male privilege are going to happen, and there are people who are acting out against it but what really can a person do? Even about white privilege? We can't actually think that if we call a magazine or broadcasting company and tell them that they need to change their ways that they are actually going to listen. I think some things we may be stuck with for a while. I mean we can do our best to be equal to all as often as we can but tricks from the knapsack are still going to appear. I think that the more time that passes the less privilege will there will be. If we try as consciously as we can to be aware, that seems the only way we will eventually move on from our current ways.
I think that it is good that George W. Bush won the election. I also heard that he is the first president since his father to win both the popular vote and the electorial vote. I wasnt supprised that Kerry won Minnesota just by looking around at the campus and how many Kerry signs and posters there are all over, it seems like almost everyone i see has a Kerry sticker or button, you dont see many Bush buttons around campus or in the cities really at all. Also you see a lot more kerry signs in people's front yards that bush signs. I just think that Bush will do a good job for the next four years.
I was watching the news tonight and they said that the venue First Ave closed.
For those of you who aren't familar with it, it's been a main venue in Minneapolis for a long time. I am very sad to see it go. I hope someone will buy it so concerts will be back there again because in my opinion it's the best venue around. The reason that it closed down I guess was because they went bandrupt and there were many law suits against them. I was just reading online in the Star Tribune that it may open in a week so that makes me feel better, but I'm still saddened by the fact that they closed their doors at all because I assumed that they would be a profitable business. I just wanted people to know. Does anyone else think that it's weird that it closed all of the sudden?

Okay, First of all I would like to start out that I do like the context of the MCIntosh articles that I have read; white and male privileges. I think the set up makes it more interesting to read. Each point is made separately, and I think that captures my attention better then sentence after sentence. I thought both articles were pretty interesting, but I do not think everything is true.
Yes, I do believe men are the stronger sex still in today's society, but I believe that a lot of men think more highly of women then this article necessarily states. A couple privileges that I did not agree with were number 37,38, and 39. They primarily relate to house work and care taker of the kids. I believe that most men and women feel that jobs involving the house and or kids are equally distributive. I, myself do not know of one family where the woman is left with the nasty jobs and then man gets the easy jobs. Raising a child is by no means an easy task, therefore I think that each task has its ups and downs. Today more men are staying home while the woman goes to work. I find that there is nothing wrong with that. Also, I tend to see more men cooking in the kitchen and doing laundry than what our society used to pursue. My parents split the cooking right down the middle. Concerning house work, both my parents do the same amount of indoor and outdoor work. As we discussed about the how whites didn't necessarily ask for this right or privilege, I believe the same goes to men.
This was one of my worst blogs! I am sorry everyone! If you have anything to say or add, go for it! I like to hear what other people think. Is there anyone that strongly disagrees or strongly agrees with this article? I recommend reading it if you haven't. It is short and worthwhile.
On the heels of the 'White Privelage' essay and the static Allia received, I just wanted to say how I think that we have a great class in regard that we have so many different people that help us to see things from different perspectives. It's great people are bold enough to speak-up, those classes are not fun where the teacher asks questions and no one even responds.
Personally, being a white American male sometimes I guess I should feel bad because I am privelaged and have an 'invisible knapsack' of tools at my disposal, a double plus, I say this both mock sarcastically but also a little in truth because like Erin was saying in class, you really can't blame people or expect them to feel bad for just being the majority race in the society they live-in, especially if they don't even realize what they have/presumably have. There's being racist and then there's going through life unknowingly being considered by others as having all the advantages, these are two different things - distant maybe, but not the same. I don't doubt that minorities, even to a certain extent women, feel like they don't have as much power or they don't have certain privelages or advantages, and I know that if I were to wake-up and have to be someone else I know I would not like being treated differently - but the fact of the matter is I don't know if there has ever been a society where both men and women were equal AND there was not even just one single minority living within the society that felt that they were regarded as equals to the majority. I do believe white privelage exists and that it's bad because everyone is equal and this country is supposed to represent feedom, but I guess I'm trying to say I don't understand how it could be fixed and I don't like feeling bad just because I am a white male. On days where I just think "I don't really like my life too much right now," I remind myself of where I could be waking-up in the world, what I could be waking-up to, etc ... and I just feel glad to be an American citizen where if anyone really has an opportunity to make a difference in the world, they have a pretty good chance in the USA, to me that's become like my American Dream, the freedom of speech to cause change. I heard somewhere to never discourage progress, no matter how slow, because progress is still progress.
The default setting on "Allow Comments" is "Closed." I read some of the documentation for Movable Type, and "Closed" means that you can read the existing comments but not post new ones. After saving this post, I'm going to log out of UThink and see if I'm able to leave a comment.
(Edited to add: It wouldn't let me, so it works. I came back in and changed the setting for just this post to "Open," so you can comment on it now.
Also, if you have posts up, especially those of you who just posted in the last day or two, and would like to allow comments, you can log in to UThink and click "Edit Entries." Go to your post(s) and change the settings as you see fit. Be aware, though, that as of yet I haven't been able to figure out how to arrange it so that only students in our class can comment -- or if that's even possible. I've left a voice mail with The Movable Type Guru, so more on that soon.)
Okay, notice that when you're creating a post, you see a section with four drop-down menus:
Post Status (?)
Allow Comments: (?)
Allow Pings (?)
Text Formatting: (?)
For this post, I selected "None" under "Allow Comments," and as you can see, you can't leave a comment on this post.
Isn't it interesting how such a small group of people (our class) can have such diverse opinions and views?! I think that by reading all these differing opinions about certain issues, we have been really learning about our audience (I am referring to the audience for our coming research papers)...I mean, by reading through this blog I have learned new things about my audience than I knew previously when we were writing the prospectus'. cOoL !!
Hmm...this piece by Barry Deutsch is interesting in that it is written by
a man...you don't see many men who defend women and who degrade their own position as being on top (as some people put it)...I think Peggy McIntosh also mentioned that point in her checklist thing ...another neat thing I
noticed was that Barry Deutsch addresses possible refuting arguments before
his checklist. For example:
"Several critics have also argued that the list somehow victimizes women. I
disagree; pointing out problems is not the same as perpetuating them. It is
not a “victimizing” position to acknowledge that injustice exists; on the
contrary, without that acknowledgement it isn't possible to fight
injustice."
I think in addressing possible refuting arguments before the actual
checklist is pretty effective, and it shows that he has considered all
sides of the issue..The checklist itself was so true it was funny! I mean,
he just mentions things that sometimes people wouldn't even think twice
about like:
"31. I can be confident that the ordinary language of day-to-day existence
will always include my sex. "All men are created equal…," mailman,
chairman, freshman, he."
That was interesting....all in all I think it is a good piece, and it shows
the author's point of view clearly and persuasivley....
I know the post-election blogs are on the way so let me be the first to drop the bomb. Bush has won the election. I don't like sounding biased so congratulations Bush and all his supporters. This next four years is guaranteed to be a looooonnnnnnng and bumpy ride!! Hollatchabough.
seriously.... the past several days have been absolutely insane for me. we'll begin with friday and my little madison adventure. for those of you who have never been there, its different from here. state street is a street with a bunch of little shops and restaurants and everyone was just walking/stumbling around state street. it was somehow WARM that night, and my Greek friends and i hung out all night. thank goodness for that.... because one of my friends from the U of M got arrested friday night. he dressed up as a german dude and was doing a little german dance on top of a big dumpster. he was quickly cuffed and spent the night in jail. a pretty little $500 fine was to follow. oof!!!! (glad i was with a different group cuz i could have been up there with him). there were insane amounts of cops out....but it wasnt a huge deal unless you were dancing on a dumpster, i guess. i asked cops for directions a lot hehe. satuday night i didnt see the riots or anything, but i have a few friends who got teargassed. saturday night i hung out wtih my U of M friends and one of my Greek friends, and we went to a bunch of house parties. there were SO MANY people that i didnt see that i wanted to see....so that was kind of a bummer, but other than that it was a blast. so the WHOLE WAY HOME i tried to study my nutrition material because i had a midterm yesterday... and let me tell you it was the hardest midterm i have taken thusfar...and i KNOW i bombed it. i probably should have been studying all weekend instead of partying in madtown like alia did. sigh. yeah so ill pay the price when i see my nutrition grade, however it was WORTH IT. everyone should go to madison next year. (ps- if you want the uncensored version you can ask me). have a great day.
I decided that I wanted to do this week's blog post on the outcome of the elction, but in order to do that I guess I will have to wait for the final decision...I hope it goes well, without problems like last election (don't we all!)..oh well..until tomorrow..or after tomorrow...who knows how long it'll take them to finalize the decision ...*yawn* ...I'd better get to bed..it's only 9:30 and my eyes are practically closed (I honestly don't know how I am typing this post)....c u all tomorrow...
Okay I know the title is kinda weird but I wanted to get people's attention (since this post is long it can put people off reading it)..believe me it's an interesting post (at least I think so)...P.S. Because of the "static" that I recieved in response to my Halloween post, i was debating whether to post this, but in the end I was like " Freedom of Speech people! I will state my opinion and that is my right...so here goes:
I find it extremely strange that many people find it so hard to live with people who view the world differently. And by the way, I have found that this problem seems to exist in America more than in many other countries (I speak with
credibility in that I have travelled a lot and have lived in many
different countries). In all the countries that I have lived in, no one tried to make the Americans living there change their culture to "acclimate" to that country's culture, rather on the contrary. For instance, I lived in the UAE for some time, and the UAE is a Muslim country. There are a lot of Americans and other non- Muslims living there...Muslims celebrate a holiday called Eid, and Christians celebrate Christmas. Now, even though the UAE is a Muslim country that is not obliged in ANY way to give a christmas vacation, they DO! They give everyone a whole week off for Christmas, and why? Because they take some people who are living there's culture and traditions into consideration, and they are being awfully courteous. On the other hand, Muslims are criticised here in the US for taking a day off school when Eid comes becuase the US gvt. doesn't give a vacation for Eid. Do you see what I mean? I find it sad that most Americans are treated with great respect in other countries, yet some can't even be okay about fellow Americans having different beliefs. AT LEAST, they can
just be respectful of differing traditions (I am not saying the US is
obliged to give a holiday for Eid because they aren't) I am just saying
that those Americans can at LEAST just be a little less harsh on other people
when they have different cultures. I also don't get why someone has to
become "Americanised" in order to live in America, or in order to be an
American. In fact, its so ironic because most "Americans" of today are
not even real Americans, they are from Europe, and other parts of the
world, except for America. The Native Americans are the true Americans,
and for an "American" to say that a person must become Americanised in order
to live here is just ironic, because the "Americans" of today themselves
are not Americanised to the cultures of true Americans.
It is funny that my (and other people's) beliefs can cause so many people
to feel so threatened that they insist on me becoming "Americanised"
in order for them to treat me as equally as they would treat someone of their own belief!
I am not directing this at any particular person, I am saying in general.
I am curious to hear what people think about the things I pointed out in this post! Be honest (and respectful - just in case Chris is reading this-)
Hello everyone...for those of you who read the debate going on about my Halloween blog post and saw Erin's reply, I wanted to post this email she sent me afterwards...(and by the way I asked her permission before I posted this)..I just wanted to show that for people who thought her reply might have sounded a bit harsh, she really didnt mean to be disrespectful or anything...check it out:
hello Alia,
i just wanted to write you this email to let you know that my opinions were not
meant to be disrespectful or hurtful to you and they were not meant to "bash"
other religions. i hope that you do not feel like that is what i was trying to
do because it was not how i was trying to come across at all. if you feel this
way please email me back and we can talk about how i could come accross less
hurtful, thanks for taking the time to read this
Erin
Isn't that sweet of her to take the time to write me an email, and make sure that my feelings weren't hurt? YES! So thanks Erin for emailing me!!! When people have kind hearts, it really shows !
Hey guys/gals. I was just wondering if you think of the elections in the U.S. Do you think that they are fair and that there is no involvement of crime and corruption, or do you think that they are rigged one way or another. Anyhow, I am going to tell you a true story of what happened in Kazakhstan- my home country- about a month ago. A month ago, there were presidential elections in Kazakhstan. Although there were 13 (thirteen) parties running for the President, only 2 had any kind of advertisement: Him, the president, and his older daughter. I would understand him running for the president again if this was his second time, but this is not the case. This is his third term as a president, since 1991. I don't know who wrote the legislation/ constitution of the country, but evidently he didn't follow any rules listed there, which I don't think are even present. Anyway, after two terms being a president- back in '97- he decided to change the rules and said that each term is 5 years, instead of 4. then he changed it to 6, and then he changed to 7. ????? How does he do it? The elections that were conducted this year showed that he won again, with a 20 percent lead. Second place was taken by his daughter, but after the people requested a recount, the second place was taken by an imprisoned (!) political official. Therefore, teh standings were 1) President 2) Imprisoned official 3) Presidents daughter. The person that came in second place was arrested for dubious charges of treason right before the election. I don't even know who is the president after all this. Of you guys have any comments and ideas about this and the election here, in the US, please post.
Sorry for the title but I thought it would get everyone's attention. Obviously the blog is a big part of our Rhetoric class but it seems to me that the purpose is becoming slighty altered and I can see it creating a negative atmosphere already between members of our class. I don't know about anyone else but I am pretty sure the point of the blog was to get our opinions out there (no matter what standpoint) and work on expressing our ideas through writing on the blog. I feel that there has been a sort of shift toward attacking other people personally concerning their blogging viewpoints. I think that if this is going to continue to be the case and escalate into a further problem, then why continue creating such a negative atmosphere in our class with this blog? Honestly, I don't feel like attending a class three times a week with people that are going to start taking attitudes towards others in the class simply because they don't see eye-to-eye on some of the blog topics! How ridiculous does that seem? And one large way you can tell that this blogging idea is starting to become a problem is because certain people are now choosing to make their blog post anonymous... which really wouldn't be necessary if we were simply expressing opinions not attacking personally. I think that if someone is willing to express such a strong point-of-view on a subject and they choose to blog about it, then you need to anticipate that others who feel completely different about your ideas are going to express their opinions right back, and you need to learn to cope and deal and just be okay with everyone's opinions. It is healthy for communication and rhetoric purposes to acknowledge differing viewpoints and opposing arguments so can we just leave it at that? I don't know how anyone else feels but I really hope we can learn to use the blog for its initial purposes! See you all in class... maybe we should bring cookies or candy or something to lighten the mood! Haha!
hey guys. i just wanted to tell everyone about the movie Stolen Honor, about what went on in Vietnam with the POWs. has anyone heard about this? i know it has a slight bias against kerry himself, but basically it is a documentary about what anti-war protestors, (led by kerry who also founded a protest group against the war efforts (i cant remember the name now)), did to try to stop the war efforts, calling the American POWs "war criminals" and stuff, which kept them in the torture camps for a much longer time than was necessary. I STRONgLY SuGgEsT that everyone watches this video! it doesnt matter whether or not you support Bush or Kerry, everyone should know about what happened over there. i might be the only one in our class who doesnt support Kerry, because of a hatred towrads Bush, but oh well.
By the way, i think that is the most stupid reason anyone could have for choosing the next president: you dont like the guy who is there now, so vote the other guy? no. that is not a very intelligent thing to do. ( i know for some people this may not be the case, but the majority of people i talk to, it is.) Why is everyone against Bush anyways? because he sent the US to war with Iraq, and he made a couple of mistakes. who cares? my dad was telling me the other day, that an Iraqi report said that if Bush was re-elected, blood would run in the streets of Iraq (or the town it was reported from, i cant remember exactly). But if they say blood is going to run in the streets if Bush is re-elected, that tells me that the "terrorists" know that Bush will fight them, and continue to fight them, while Kerry will be a pushover and allow it to continue. and Bush has a plan for what is needed for the good of America. The other thing that gets me is that Kerry wants to go over and be all "buddy buddy" with North Korea, which we all know is never going to happen, no matter what, because Kim (or whatever his name is), the dictator over there, will never give in. and theres no way we can force him to go anywhere. Bush knows this, and i trust him to make the right decisions in the future. thank you for your time. PLeAsE waTCH thE VIDEO!!!
I just wanted to call everyone's attention to a comment posted by someone called 'Chris' in reply to my blog post "Halloween? Hmm.."...I just wanted to ask everyone in the class to read his rather rude (in my opinion) reply, and tell me what they think of it...is it just me or are some people just SO not able to handle the idea of a person having different beliefs to theirs?
Hey guys, have you heard of what Tim Pawlenty will do with the Native-American casinos? He is going to make them pay 350 million dollars a year, because the state doesn't have enough money. By the way, who made the state run out of money? (King George the Second). Anyhow, our governor made a contract with Native-American casinos back a couple years ago, but they are just breaking it AGAIN. I say AGAIN because all throughout the American history, the Native Americans got CHEATED. Every single time. Think about it: Jackson gave them "the vast lands west of Mississippi", oh, I am sure he did; or the Trail of tears, why did they have to move Native Americans from Oklahoma and surrounding states to like colorado or something? As I have said, the pacts that the US government has signed with them are totally useless in the minds of rich politicians, yet they play a major role in the lives of these families.
If you guys have any ideas about taxing the casinos, write back.
Thanks for your time. Olzhas Toleu
