I am doing my project on the road congestion in the twin cites and I'm wondering if anyone has ideas for transportation changes that could be made. Or even if you have opinions of things that are already being proposed or done (Lightrail or toll lanes). Thanks!

First of all we have cabs, buses, lightrails and people who own their own cars. There is going to be traffic especially with the new lightrails running. I can't say that I like the traffic, but it's something that we need to get use to especially in the city. On the highways you could make more lanes, but in the process of doing that, there is going to be more congestion created. It's hard issue, but I think it is a good topic to get us more involved and brainstorming about how to make less congestion.
Posted by: Pam at June 28, 2004 07:18 PMHi Laura,
I think that the road congestion occurs because people drive slow for the dumbest reasons. Just because you see a couple of water drops on your windshield doesn't mean you can slam on your breaks, go slow and hold up traffic. I propose that we stop giving licenses to people over 60. They drive even slower. I also think they should put cameras on the car pool lanes and highways because single people are always using the carpool lane and holding up traffic there. People also run the traffic lights on the ramps creating congestions. The thing that costs the most congestion is people not being courtious to others.
Posted by: Paxton at June 28, 2004 07:20 PMRiding the light rail this weekend confirmed the one fault I have with the project -- the trains sometimes have to stop and wait for traffic. It's kind of annoying even though they only stop for a short time. I think anything that could be done to combat this (the Campus Connectors have transmitters that switch the stoplights which the trains might have, but it didn't seem like it) would be beneficial. Also, I think the Northstar commuter rail project would be very helpful in reducing congestion on North/South corridors.
Posted by: Ben at June 28, 2004 08:46 PMAs far as my experience goes, congestion happens because people sit in the far right lane forever, not letting people merge in to the lane get off the highway or to get on the highway. They just clog it up that way.
Posted by: Derek at June 29, 2004 08:36 AMTo free up road contruction, a possible solution may be to make the roads wider with more lanes. For instance, have a interstates in the cities be four lanes wide. Then is road construction is needed there will be more room to keep traffic driving efficently. Addtionally, we should encourage people to car pool in other ways. Mass transit systems as the light rail is a good idea but is expensive to build. My recomdedation is to widen the main interstates to four lanes at all times. (i.e. 94, 494, 694, 35W, 35E) and encourage car pooling.

I believe that road congestion is mostly due to the shortage of lanes in the Highways particularly, the main interstates such as 494,94,and 35w. I would also think that there must be some changes occuring in the law for the public driving. For instance, I am personally against the rules upon which elderlies beyond 65 freely drive everywhere that could easily contribute to the road congestion, in addition to the danger it could cause in general. Carpooling especially
for downtown workers might reduce the heavy traffic in 35w and 494.
Thank you so much for all of your feedback. Also if you have any personal stories about the traffic around here, I would love to hear them. My e-mail is Daws0068 if you wouldn't want to post it. Thanks again!
