Numbers in news stories help the audience to think the bigger picture. Journalists need to know basic Math to report stories such as budget or survey.

USA Today reported that "nearly one in five Americans" don't have any religious affiliation. The was study conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. The reporter attributes the organization that conducted the survey.

Cathy Lynn Grossman uses different numbers to tell the trend. Grossman shows 19,377 people were surveyed, which tells the readers the size of the sample for the study. Grossman uses Math to tell that "nearly one in five Americans" without any religious connection. The reporter compares numbers between two studies and cites the sources.

The reporter tells a simple story effectively with numbers.
