Endagered Gorillas Caught in Congo Crossfire
Congolese rebels took hold of a military camp and a gorilla park Sunday that is home to endangered mountain gorillas, according to the United Nations. The "heavy fighting" also sent thousands of people fleeing, the CNN news story said.
The fighting between rebels and government officials broke a week-old cease-fire amid the groups.
According the the International Herald Tribune it was the rebel groups who defied the UN Security Council Sunday by starting a new offensive.
They seized Virunga National Park headquarters, home to 200 of 700 endangered gorillas. Park rangers fled fearing their own safety and now the gorillas are in danger of being caught in the cross-fire of this ongoing battle.
