Coulrophobia- Fear of clowns. Some people consider this an irrational fear, and as rare as it is, I have a friend that panics and has an anxiety attack whenever she sees a clown or an image of a clown anywhere. Reading about phobias in chapter 15- it interested me that this is the most common of all anxiety disorders. Agoraphobia is surprising common, occurring in one in 20 people. This is the fear of social embarrassment. Social phobias are commonly experienced in the milder form- where you are afraid of speaking in public or presenting in front of a small group of people. Magnified by several times would bring you to experience a social phobia full scale. Showing up in public is difficult for people like this as they are constantly surrounded by people and feel the pressure of people watching them. Reading about phobias makes me exceedingly grateful that I live a relatively fear-free life.

But this opens up many other questions like whether phobias can be genetic and the different ways to deal with them. Genetic phobias could be connected to the evolutionary 'mild' fear most people experience when faced with spiders of snakes- as they could pose a threat and be dangerous to ones well-being.

I never knew how common coulrophobia was! I find it fascinating that social phobia is so common as well. I wonder why most of us have much subtler forms of social phobia. It it is truly due to genetic causes or environment?

I find this pretty interesting too but in a different way. I've never been afraid of clowns and I just don't see why people are but a surprisingly large amount of people are. I almost think most fears start when we're young and then just grow from that. But I would have to look at many more studies and maybe do a few of my own to know for sure whether or not thats true.

I think the topic on phobias is very interesting because of the vast majority of them. So many people have phobias of so many different things that may seem so silly and weird, although I am not surprised that a lot of people are afraid of clowns and that Agoraphobia is so common because a lot of people get nervous in social situations and it can be very stressful for someone.

I shudder whenever I see a clown. I really dislike them, but I would not say I have a phobia about them. What I find most interesting about your post is the mention of genetics on phobias. This is very intriguing to me. It makes me wonder what other kinds of disorders could be genetic and just how far genetics impacts a persons disorder. And I was also surprised to find out that phobias are number one for psychological disorders. I wonder just how many phobias are out there and which ones are common other than agoraphobia.

I find it interesting how common coulrophobia is. I never would have thought so many people had a phobia of someone dressed up in a costume. The question about whether phobias are genetic or not is very interesting. I think it would be interesting to do an experiment or study to find out how many peoples phobias are genetic. I am also curious as to if phobias are more popular if someone close to you has that same phobia. It seems so weird that so many people are afraid clowns, and it makes me wonder if people are afraid of them just because they know a lot of other people are. I am curious if this common for other phobias as well. A lot of people have phobias of snakes, clowns, bugs, and heights. I wonder if people are afraid of these things because they learn from others that these things tend to be bad.

I went to school with a girl who is afraid of mascots which I find interesting. I find this interesting because there's another person inside of the costume, just like there's a real person who's just dressed up like a clown. I wouldn't say I have a fear of clowns although I definitely do find them creepy yet standing next to Goldy isn't a problem for me at all. I find it interesting as to why our brains choose one situation to focus on and develop a phobia of. Same goes with spiders and heights, while I do not particularly like either of these I wouldn't say I have a phobia of them, yet some people do.

I totally agree with what you said about living a fairly fear-free life. It's nice to not have panic attacks when seeing something nasty. But it was interesting on what you said about how phobias could possible be genetically connected. Because, you have to wonder, how do those fears come up so suddenly? Cause as babies, we don't know what anything really is, so at that stage we shouldn't really be that afraid of things. And then even at the toddler and young child stage, that's the stage where we are the most curious and fear less. Probing and tasting everything, it's amazing that phobias happen. So then you have to ask yourself, is it nature or nurture? Nicely written article.
