REM for LIFE!

One of the most interesting things I have learned in the Psychology 101 is the concept of consciousness; in particular the biology of sleep. As a busy college student and a soon-to-be busy engineer, I will be battling the constant struggle of balancing work, recreational time, and sleep. Like most people, I usually prioritize the first two over the latter. With the knowledge I have gained from the sleep cycles I will be able to understand my body's needs for sleep more thoroughly. It is better to take a twenty minute nap than an hour nap because of the way the REM cycles work. It would not be a good idea to wake up during the actual REM stage because it would make you more tired. I did a little investigation on how I could wake up during the proper times, and I found an iPhone app that apparently measures sleep cycles, and wakes the user up at a time that allows your body to feel most rested. I plan on trying this app out but I will keep in mind the principles of scientific thinking that I have learned from the text which may help me in deciding the validity of this claim.

I also found the chapter about sleep to be very interesting. I now understand why sometimes I'm so tired when I wake up, and other times I feel well rested. That app looks so cool, I'm going to look into it as well!

Wow that app sounds really cool. I wonder if they also have it on Android phones because I may check it out myself. But yeah my mom has always said to take power naps like 20 minute naps here and there. I believed her but had my doubts but after reading the book and learning more about sleep cycles I've learned that this method is a good way to keep your body and mind rested during the day.

I think this is interesting because I LOVE taking naps and I probably take at least one every day, which usually ends up being about an hour but after I wake up half the time i'm more out of it than before. However, sometimes I only have time for a 20 or 30 minute nap and when I wake up I feel much more refreshed! Also, I've heard of alarm clocks that wake you up at the best time and I want to try one to see if they really work!

Sometimes I feel like I use what I learned in psychology as an excuse to give up on studying and go to bed when I have a test the next day. However, it really is necessary to sleep to perform well physically or academically. They say that you don't learn or retain information as well when you are tired so it is better to sleep and study less than to stay up all night and be exhausted.

I am very curious as to if this app works, and I am thinking about trying it. Before I left for college first semester, my older brother always said to me "enjoy sleeping as much as you can this summer because there will never be a time you aren't tired in college." It is weird how true this turned out to be. I feel like I am always up late studying during the week, and up early for class or studying early in the mornings and on the weekends I am out late with my friends, and then up early for work or more studying. It would be interesting to see if this iPhone app actually works and if it would make me less tired. We learned in psychology that getting sleep is important to do well on an exam, so I sometimes use this as an excuse to go to bed when I really should be staying up late to study. I do not think I have taken as many naps as I have freshman year than I have in all of my 19 years. I am glad we learned about the different sleep cycles, and I am going to remember this for the rest of my college years.

Wow that app sounds pretty impressive! We are all college students and if there is one thing that makes most of us alike is the fact that we usually do not get enough sleep. I try to get my body rested but sometimes it just isn't able to happen. I think the important thing to remember is always try and get 7-8 hours of sleep. Obviously some nights will not allow for that many hours of sleep but if you allow your body enough time, I feel like it will always do whats best. I have had many nights where I put a movie in and try and fall asleep but I'm just not tired. That night I may only get 6 hours of sleep but then the following night I put a movie in and hardly make it past the introduction before I'm sleeping so then I would maybe get 8 hours. I think we just need to listen to our bodies and do whatever it tells us because most of the time, it is probably right.

I also will remember the REM cycle. It is very fascinating and useful, especially for college students who tend to not sleep enough. I definitely can tell when I haven't gotten enough sleep and now I can use what I have learned in Psych to understand why I don't feel rested at times. I have never heard about that app before but it seems very interesting.
