That's What Makes You Beautiful

I think one thing that will really stick with me for the next 5 is a topic we just covered very recently. Beauty and what people perceive as beautiful. Even though we just covered this topic, it has been something studied and discussed for years. In places like the United States, our perception of beautiful and fashionable changes like the wind. One day natural color skin is beautiful, the next, it is seen as far too pale and now the expectation is to be tan year round...sometimes almost orange. This is greatly seen in the "model woman" from back in the day and the "model women" of today However our perception of what is beautiful lasts only inside the borders of our country. In other nations, what they see as the ideal person is drastically different whether that be an extra long neck or a very well fed woman. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. kate-upton-si-40511.jpg

This was a very applicable topic that we learned about. I found the combination of what defines beauty and how people choose mates to be very interesting because of how often it relates to our lives as college students. With the knowledge that beauty is defined differently across cultures, and that males and females have different standards for selecting mates, I feel more informed on how relationships develop. Furthermore, I agree with the book in that beauty plays a huge role in the start of a relationship due to my own experiences of meeting new people. It is not until later in the relationship that the deeper qualities become more influential in choosing a mate.

I found this topic very intriguing. I cannot understand how models being so extremely unhealthy are idolized by so many women. If you think about it the most beautiful women are almost never models (at least in my opinion). To me, beauty is supposed to be natural- not fake tans, plastic surgery, or fasting. Therefore, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree with this completely. When i was writing my blog this didn't come to mind as i searched for a topic but when I think more about it I believe this will be remembered as well but almost because it gave a new perspective on an already questionable thing. Before we learned about beauty being in the eye of the beholder you always do wonder about why girls like the anorexic girl we saw in the video is found beauty and who it is that is telling the world that it is the right look. Because of this lesson in class i feel as if I do understand that concept, and that beauty is what you find it to be.

I defiantly agree! Society and different cultures and what not view and treat things so much differently! I remember watching different videos back in sociology class in high school about how the 'beautiful' thing in the culture was how much you could stretch out your bottom lip. It also is interesting though and not brought up that beauty is across all cultures, and I think may stretch all the way to mammals in general!

This is so true and I'm glad Psychology 1001 teaches about beauty. It's interesting how much beauty is evaluated across the world. In some cultures it's better to be skinny, in others it's better to be chubby. But in some cases, beauty becomes unhealthy like we saw in the video during discussion. The anorexic model was so frail and sick that she eventually died from her determination to be beautiful.

I definitely agree that this topic was very insightful It proved that some of the keystone opinions that we have as individuals of different countries and cultures truly depends on those country's and culture's opinions. I think that it all comes down to development and how opinions are shaped during your earlier years. It makes me wonder what else, other than beauty, creates those pre-set opinions that can differ throughout time and other places.

I to agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I feel like everyone has a slightly different taste in the opposite or even same sex. Some people like you said like women who are bigger while some like them skinny and still others prefer them to be curvy. The one thing I don't like though is the people who try so hard to be a certain type fo beautiful. Just be yourself and one day that special someone, who thinks your beautiful 24/7, will come along and sweep you off your feet.

I think it is so true that the idea of beauty if constantly fluctuating. I think you made an excellent point by using the comparison of being pale and tan. I will also remember what we learned recently and how it relates to being normal or abnormal. I think the media effects some people so much that they start practicing abnormal behavior just because they want to be "normal."

I agree with your post. Our perception of beauty is heavily distorted and it's having a large impact on the younger society. Who is to say who is beautiful and who is not? Although beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, I believe that everybody has beautiful qualities. We need to shy away from what society is shoving down our throats in terms of an ideal image and accept everybody for who they are.

it's interesting to think about this in a historical sense, as you referring. Our taste is subject to a change in lifestyles amongst us, and in our culture. Say for instance that because of mass production we are able to now have food all the time and the fear of starvation (for us University students at least), is very low, thus with this bounty of gratuitous consumption our tastes have changed, where voluptuous people were seen as healthy in the past, they are now seen as unhealthy in the new context of our consumerist culture (despite the fact, I must note, that we continue to encourage consumption despite it's unhealthy effects.)

I agree with others who have posted here.... I think that in a historical sense this is interesting. Now though I find it disturbing that our society has decided that people who are so thin that they might be unhealthy to be what our young girls are aspiring to be. I am happy that some modeling companies and magazines are finally putting their foot down even though I know that it will take a long time if at all before we see anyone normal looking gracing the cover of a magazine.

You really couldn't have said that more perfectly. It really is true the there shouldn't be just this one mass deciding what is beautiful. As you said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so how could it have turned into "beauty is in the eye of the public"? Not to mention, there's also so many levels and variations of beauty. There's nature beauty, there's on-the-magazine beauty, there's Picasso and then Monet beauty, and finally, there's beauty in which you see with your heart rather than your eyes. And personally, I feel like the last one is the best one. That is when you are truly judging a person by the way they are not by the way they merely physically look.
