ON THESIS STATEMENTS:
Download file

SOME QUOTATION GUIDELINES:
- Do not begin or end a paragraph with a quotation; you should introduce and analyze each selection.
- Use ellipses (. . .) to omit unnecessary words within your quotations, but not at the beginning or end (the nature of quotation suggests that there is something before and after).
- Use [word] to replace any words you need to change, such as verb changes or names: e.g. change 'Marlow and Kurtz disagree about what "he believes is progress,"' to 'Marlow and Kurtz disagree about what "[Kurtz] believes is progress."'
- Quotations should be integrated into your sentences, i.e. they shouldn’t stand on their own grammatically. Put punctuation inside the quotations, and a parenthetical citation after it:
As Said’s conclusion indicates, “the crisis is one of storytelling and not dramatic action (46).
According to the article, Marlow “is a hero who deserves to be praised, which raises further questions about the term heroism (42).

RESPONSE PAPER GUIDELINES 9/11/07
The one-page response papers are an opportunity to document your insights and questions; they will prepare you to discuss and serve as groundwork for your essays. The best response papers will: ask questions, make connections between texts and experiences, and closely engage the text (quote liberally for future reference). These papers need not be polished—forego a traditional introduction/conclusion—but be concise and efficient (see examples below):

Okay: “Stavrianos raises many interesting points. I hadn’t really considered these ideas before. For example, he describes the Third World as a set of relations rather than a group of countries (40). This raises a bunch of questions for me though. I wonder whether these relations stable? And are they controllable? And then who would control them? etc.?

Better: “Stavrianos’s description of the Third World as a set of relations is an appealing model, but who governs these relations and are they stable (40)?

Response papers will not be accepted late and are a part of your participation grade.
