New database - CAMIO

We have a new database of art images, called Camio. We are getting it for free through a statewide consortium of which we are a member. It is composed of digitized museum collections, similar to ArtStor. Here is an official description:

OCLC's Catalog of Art Museum Images Online is a collection documenting works of art from around the world, representing the collections of 24 prominent museums including The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Walker Art Center. Paid for by Electronic Library of Minnesota.

Good news for us...

DAAI arrives and ARTstor leaves

The university is going through a budget crisis and the library is not an exception. One of the ways we have decided to save money has been to end our subscription to ARTstor, the database of art and design images. Advice from the Art and Design department here helped us make the decision.

The cost of ARTstor was high, and cutting it saved us more money than we needed to save. This has allowed us to add a subscription to a less expensive database, the Design and Applied Arts Index (DAAI), which is the major database of articles in the literature on Design. We've been interested in this one for a long time and are happy to have the opportunity to add it, as unfortunate as the circumstances are.

If you want to use DAAI, you can find a link to it on our LibGuide for Design, here: http://libguides.d.umn.edu/content.php?pid=67962&sid=502316.

New Books and Videos

We maintain a page on the library website where you can always go to see what books and videos have been purchased recently. We update it monthly, and keep the lists archived on the site.

I like to go to that page regularly to see what we've been getting that I didn't know about.

Fancy Linking Guide

This is for faculty....

I have been working on a collection of web pages on the UMD Library website that give instructions on some fancy ways to link to library resources. We have a lot of things you might want to link to in your course web pages or course WebCT or Moodle sites that require a bit more than copying and pasting a link. To explore what those are and get the instructions, visit my Guide to Linking to Library Resources. I'd appreciate any feedback you have to offer.

Recent Acquisitions

The Library has added a web page listing our new acquisitions from the previous month. The list includes regular books, children's literature, teaching materials, reference books, bestsellers, and multimedia items. There will be a new list each month at the same location on the website. It's a very nice way to get a sense of what we are buying to support the University's needs.

Instant Messaging update

The reference department has set up a "chat widget," which allows anyone to chat with a librarian at the reference desk by going to the "Ask Us" page. This chat doesn't require the user to have any kind of account with any instant messaging service. I think this is pretty nifty.

Additionally, I offer chat service from my office to students and faculty in my subject areas. My IM accounts:

AIM: umdlibraryrory

MSN: umdlibraryrory@hotmail.com

GTalk: umdlibraryrory@gmail.com

ICQ: 347078118

I hope some folks find these services useful.

We have a nice collection of electronic reference books from Oxford University Press that are kind of hidden away within our databases. Here are some links to some of the reference books on Art subjects:

A Dictionary of Modern Design

A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art

A Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture

Access will require a login if you are off campus, using your regular x.500 login and password.

These are in addition to the extensive Grove Art Online (formerly called the Grove Dictionary of Art, but now expanded to include some Oxford titles).
