St. Croix Festival Theatre presents: A Christmas Carol

By: Mark Eagan UMD student

The tail of young Ralphie Parker and his obsession with the infamous Red Ridder BB gun was an instant hit at the Festival theatre on December 26, 2008. A Christmas Carol was all that was expected, a classic comedy with all sorts of fun for the family to enjoy. The Festival Theatre worked extra hard to personalize the play with wonderful hints of their own originality. The story narrated by Jeff Broitman helped the audience follow along as the tail proceeded throughout the night. Though what made this play brilliant was the way it was displayed. A Christmas Carol was set in northern Michigan in the early 50’s. So with the 50’s came a borage of stylistic clothing and scenery. With a final touch of well thought out lighting and sound effects made this play a “Must See.

The proscenium stage was a sight to see. Weather the scene was inside or out the stage was always appropriately dressed. In the center was a two-story house split open for everyone to see. The action of the play was staged around the classic family living room and kitchen scenes of everyday life. So in the kitchen there was the big old fridge and old kitchen table and chairs. Vibrant yet ugly colors of the times were on the drapes and sofa in the living room. The actors and actresses also fit the time era too. With old wool hats, jackets, and bomber hats for some.

A more creative part about the set was the big boxes dressed as presents on stage right. The presents signified Christmas but the interesting part about them was how they were used for scene changes. One of the presents was on wheels and inside it was a classroom for all the classic classroom scenes. The narrator would turn the present and an actress playing the teacher would proceed with the play inside the box. When the scene ended the narrator would just rotate the box so that it looked like a present again.

Lighting also played a key role in A Christmas Carol. The lighting was always bright and gave the performance a happy effect. The light designer did a good job by making sure each scene was lit properly too.

Overall the design of A Christmas Carol was very well done. The techniques of the designers intrigued the audience. There was n doubt that it was a great performance with creative techniques. Every aspect of the design was accomplished the directors goal and made the play a spectacular Christmas event for the family to enjoy!
