That was a common tannery occupation in 1880, when the skins of cats dogs and rabbits were used as lining in inexpensive clothes, and used in the very lowest quality gloves.
The real oddball job was trapping the feral cats and dogs or collecting their carcasses, an occupation which was usually identified in the census as 'scavenger', although that term also applied to people licensed and paid by the community to be garbage collectors.
