Parochialism

No, really, that's all there is to the story. They met in New Zealand. Hence the headline in the New Zealand Herald.

These kinds of stories are probably universal. I never fail to be amused by them. I'd say there's an interesting project for someone to look at how often these types of articles appear in papers in different places.

Wow, that's about a tenuous a "local angle" thread as I've seen!

And growing up in the Midwest of America where most days are slow news days, I've seen my share of "local angle" stories.

No, I can't agree. It would be a long, boring and dreary research project, which would, after much work, prove its hypothesis: Yes, "local media look for local angles". And it is eminently sensible that they should do so.
