Funeral for boy who was beaten draws hundreds

Hundreds of people, many strangers, attended the funeral of a 4-year-old-boy who was beaten to death by his cousin. The funeral drew support from community members and politicians alike. Another service will be held in Reed's hometown, Chicago, reported KARE.
Carla Poole, the 37-year-old cousin is in jail and has been charged for the beating, reported the Associated Press.

Drive-by shooting on I-35W injures one

A drive-by shooting Sunday closed off part of 35W and put one man in the hospital. Traffic was blocked for hours according to Fox 9 News.
The shooting took place on the northbound lanes of 35W by the Lake Street exit. A man with a shotgun fired into a car with four occupants. The driver was hit and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, reported the Pioneer Press.

Man dies with plastic bag of drugs in throat

After being arrested for driving while intoxicated Wednesday, a man died before paramedics could remove a plastic bag full of drugs from his throat. Marcus Burrell, 38, was pronounced dead at North Memorial Medical Center. the Star Tribune reports the incident happening at 2:30 a.m.
Police suspect the bag contained crack cocaine.
Homicide and internal affairs will investigate the situation, as is standard procedure, according to WCCO.

Police discover suburban pot-growing operation

Police seized 1,000 marijuana plants from the basement of a White Bear Lake home. A firefighter alerted police to unusual patterns of frost and two weeks later the pot was discovered.
The house was uninhabited, but tended to by its 27-year-old homeowner and his toddler son, according to the Star Tribune. The Pioneer Press reported that the infant was turned over to Children's Hospital.

Clinton speaks to Minneapolis crown

Hillary Clinton visited Minneapolis Sunday and delivered a speech at Augsburg University. Her speech focused on environmental and health care components of her campaign.
Clinton spoke a day after her rival, Barack Obama, spoke to 20,000 in the Target Center. On super-bowl Sunday, Clinton spoke to a crowd of 4,000 according to the Star Tribune. The Pioneer Press counted 3,800 in their article but 4,200 in a cutline.

Star Tribune: For Sale

The Star Tribune's headquarters will be available for purchase. In a memo to employees Friday, Chris Harte, the publisher, informed employees of the plan to put the 425 Portland building on the market. The Pioneer Press reported that Harte thinks the entire building should be sold to make it more desirable to any potential buyers.
The story in the Star Tribune explained last year's near sale of part of the property to the Minnesota Vikings for $45 million. Neither story included the value of the property.

Former University hockey player arrested in connection with drug possesion

Nate Hagemo, a former gopher hockey player was arrested Saturday the 26th after police discovered syringes with what appeared to be the remains of heroin in his vehicle. Hagemo, 21, was a famed hockey player for the University of Minnesota before a shoulder injury that prevented him from going on in the sport. Hagemo was with a 39-year-old St. Paul man when he was arrested according to the Star Tribune
While the Star Tribune specifically referred to what the police found as a "syringes and a drug kit" the Minnesota Daily reported that police found "possible drug substances."
Hagemo was held for three days in county jail. Charges for possession of a controlled substance are pending the results of a drug test on the evidence.

First steel installed for TCF Bank Stadium

The first steel for the TCF Bank Stadium was installed Monday. The stadium will recieve 10 - 15 daily shipments of steel until late July according to a story in the Star Tribune.
The Minnesota Daily reported those details and added that the construction firm, M.A Mortenson Company, said the project is on schedule.
The stadium is set to open September 12, 2009.
