Here are minutes from the May 12th meeting of the Curriculum Review Board. Discussion revolved around day-one competencies, those technical and non-technical skills required at the time of graduation. We surveyed practitioners and got back some interesting results. Attached here you will see a spreadsheet with data from CVM faculty and the practitioner data, a list of common disorders generated by those practitioners by species, and demographic data for the survey. Projects underway right now are:

1) Definition by species group of which competencies are required for each species; which suggested competencies should be added to the list; which competencies must be introduced, reinforced, and assessed during senior year; and which rotations best capture those competencies for each species. Dr. Erin Malone will be in charge of equine, swine, and poultry. Dr. John Fetrow will head up the dairy and beef discussions. I will be in charge of small animal.

2) Dr. Mike Conzemius will flesh out an idea for a more targeted survey of practitioners to help us better understand how much specialty information is appropriate within the curriculum.

Happy to respond to comments and questions - thanks! - Peggy

Day-one competencies - practitioner survey data

Beginning with the end in mind, we have generated a list of the competencies we expect of new veterinary graduates. Variations of this list have been used by groups in the college to guide review of required courses and rotations by track and the curriculum review board is now refining and somewhat standardizing that process. We asked for input from practicing veterinarians and that data is posted here for your review and comments. Various groups from the college will be solicited for input as we use this data moving forward. I welcome your comments and questions!
