The Rockwell Typeface

Rockwell is a 20th Century slab serif typeface that was designed at the Monotype foundry's in-house design studio in 1934. The typeface consists of a monoweighted stroke and is based on a condensed design known as Litho Antique. Rockwell is mainly used for large-scale display (such as print advertisements) instead of lengthy bodies of text. This typeface was used heavily by companies such as Guinness and and Docklands Light Railway during the 1980's and 90's.

Typeface Research

Frutiger is a sans-serif typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger from Switzerland. Frutiger is a type designer, a writer, and a wood engraver. He was commissioned by the new airport in Roissy, France which needed a new sign system in 1968. Frutiger designed a new typeface for the airport which was originally called Roissy.

Frutiger wanted to design a typeface that related closely to his last typeface, Univers, but wanted to incorporate aspects of Gill Sans. The letters were well suited for the new airport with it's modern and legible appearance at various sizes, angles, and distances.

The typeface was publicly released in 1976 by the Linotype foundry. Frutiger has become a popular typeface in today's advertisement and small print. It was updated with an italic style in 1997 with the name, Frutiger Next that was used for signage in Munich.
