Purpose
To install of a 2.9kW dual axis tracking photovoltaic array at Two Harbors High School, Two Harbors, Minnesota.
Partners
NMSDP, NE Clean Energy Resource Team, Two Harbors High School, EnviroClub (THHS), Silver Creek Institute, Cooperative Light and Power, Clover Valley Community, and Minnesota Dept. of Commerce.
Activities
The first steps toward developing the solar photovoltaic array were taken five years ago when NMSDP funded a school sustainability coordinator to identify possible energy conservation and production goals. This initial step laid the foundation for the array installation and was combined in a presentation by several science faculty and members of the student led EnviroClub to encourage newly elected school board members to pass a resolution supporting a photovoltaic installation. Once passed, funds were sought to support the installation.
Outcomes
The School Board for the Lake Superior School District passed a resolution supporting the project on February 15th, 2007 contingent upon securing outside funding to cover the estimated $28,000 installation cost. Funding was secured by December 2007 and equipment was ordered. The installation has now been completed, production data is now available to the community and the first of two workshops has given. A dedication ceremony will be announced in December and will include supporters of the project and the media.
