Purpose
To provide basic food literacy for students throughout Northeastern MN, provide the opportunity for farmers to teach the curriculum to earn income, establish community connections, provide passion and real stories for the students to enhance both the farmers and the students lives.
Partners
Sustainable Farmers Association, schools, farmers, and Duluth Superior Community Foundation.
Activities
The curriculum has been taught for three years to 32 different classes, for about 960 students for over 1344 instructional hours in the classroom and on the farm.
Outcomes
Educational approaches are hard to quantify. From interviewing the students and looking at their comments in many Thank You cards, I can say that this curriculum has provided a majority of the 960 students a true appreciation for farming, an understanding of the issues around sustainability, and will be a block of people who will THINK about farming and food in a way that will make them more engaged and enlightened consumers and voters.
