Purpose
Sustainable design consultation and plan development for a community center for
Kabetogama, MN, and a final guide detailing the design process.
Partners
Northeast Minnesota Sustainable Development Partnership
Kabetogama Community
Activities
Meetings were held in the community to assess goals and needs. Through a cyclic
process of feedback and design, plans were developed, leading to the eventual final
design (in progress). The meetings and feedback cycles were documented to provide a
basis for the guide and final report.
Outcomes
Three initial design schemes were proposed as a result of the first meeting. These
designs were shared with the broader Kabetogama community for reaction and
suggestion. Based on this feedback, the final scheme was developed and is currently
being used for fundraising in the community, and it will be the basis for construction
documents in the future.
Currently, we are developing the “Sustainable Community Design Guide.” Using plain
language, it explains the basic concept of sustainability, how it is measured, how it
is achieved, and lists resources and references for further information. It is designed
to answer basic questions and provide a direction for communities seeking this sort
of design assistance. It will save time and money in the beginning, allowing for more
effective and substantial communication later in the process.
