I went to see Professor Javier Auyero speak at SRI. His presentation revolved around preliminary research he had been doing on violence in a small town in South America, I believe. He talked about how children were submersed in a culture of violence and murders on a weekly basis. Auyero even said that crimes had almost doubled from 1995 to 2008 from 1,114 crimes per 100,000 residents to 2,010 crimes per 100,000 residents, respectively. Additionally, the murder rate of the town he was researching was 28.4 per 100,000 residents per year, more than four times the state rate. Overall, his presentation was very difficult to swallow because of how heavy the topic was, but it was still very fascinating to see the differences in their culture and ours.
