Rwanda Genocide Resources

The Libraries staff are working with The Center for Global Studies on an exhibit that will feature the history, the sponsored campus events in April 2014, and library resources related to the Rwanda genocide. The exhibit is on the first floor of Wilson Library.

We've also created a Rwanda Library Resources guide with suggested databases and some recommended books and websites, gathered from our collection and chosen in cooperation with the presenters.

The Institute for Global Studies in partnership with The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Human Rights Program is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. The events will include a public conference, a student conference, and a K-16 teacher workshop. The objectives of the commemorative events are: promoting public understanding of what happened in Rwanda, discussing the immediate responses of the international community to the violence, and analyzing the long-term consequences that the cataclysmic failure to prevent the genocide had on international policy and action.

Lessons from Rwanda
Center for Holocaust Studies' blog

Did you know that you can search for content related to Rwanda in sources traditionally covering the Holocaust? I want to highlight two important online resources that include video testimonies from survivors and helpers from both genocides:

The VHA is a subscription resource and you need to be logged in at a campus computer (library computers are recommended) to gain full access to the testimonies.
The USHMM is freely accessible on the web and does not require logon.

-- Rwanda Tutsi Genocide Testimony Overview
in the USC Shoah Foundation Institute's Visual History Archive (VHA)

In April 2013, USC Shoah Foundation for Visual History and Education incorporated into the Visual History Archive the indexed testimonies of 64 survivors and rescuers of the 1994 Rwandan Tutsi Genocide. This represented a significant milestone for the USC Shoah Foundation--this the first time we have made available non-Holocaust testimonies in our search tool.

-- United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
USHMM Confront Genocide

The work of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on genocide and related crimes against humanity is conducted by the Center for the Prevention of Genocide and guided by the Committee on Conscience, a standing committee of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Michael Chertoff, former US Secretary of Homeland Security, currently chairs the Committee on Conscience. Its mandate is to alert the national conscience, influence policy makers, and stimulate worldwide action to confront and work to halt acts of genocide or related crimes against humanity.

Alice Herz-Sommer

Alice Herz-Sommer was the oldest living survivor of the Holocaust, died last week. Read the news story from Minnesota Public Radio.

You can learn more about Alice Herz-Sommer in the Visual History Archive.

The Visual History Archive, maintained by the USC Shoah Foundation, is a database of nearly 52,000 videos of survivors and helpers who have been interviewed and recorded. The University of Minnesota Libraries has a paid subscription to this resource. Anyone may come into campus and use it, but please note that videos must first be requested. This may take just a short time, but we recommend you call the service desk at 612 624-3321 to make arrangements before you come. Linking page is:
