This research retreat will offer inspiring examples of digital humanities scholarship, provide an opportunity to discuss tools and issues at the heart of the research, and allow you to network with potential research partners. This symposium is aimed at scholars (faculty and graduate students) from humanities and computer science fields, academic technologists, programmers, research consultants, librarians, and other academic support staff from Minnesota. Since this mode of research requires collaboration and partnership, we are aiming for a diverse set of attendees that will spark new research.

"The Struggle for the Old Testament in Nazi Germany: The Untold Story of Gerhard von Rad"

Bernard Levinson, Berman Family Chair in Jewish Studies and Hebrew Bible and Professor of Classical and Near Eastern Studies and of Law at the University of Minnesota, will be giving a special lecture at Or Emet: Minnesota Congregation for Humanistic Judaism on Friday, April 27, 2012. Levinson will discuss the moving story of Gerhard von Rad's heroic struggles to defend the Old Testament in Nazi Germany and how he fought this battle in near isolation, long before he became a famous Protestant theologian.

The lecture will begin after Or Emet's 7:30 pm Humanistic Sabbath service and will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat reception. The event will be held at Minneapolis Sabes Jewish Community Center, 4330 Cedar Lake Rd. S., St. Louis Park, and is free and open to the public.

University Libraries to be Presented with Prestigious "Excellence in Academic Libraries" Award

The University of Minnesota Libraries are bringing in the cupcakes and trumpets to celebrate winning this year's prestigious Excellence in Academic Libraries Award. The Libraries have received the award, a national tribute to a library and its staff, in recognition of their success integrating their expertise and resources into the life of the campus. Sponsored by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL, a division of the American Library Association) and Blackwell’s Book Services, the $3,000 award and a plaque will be presented by ACRL President Erika Linke to Provost Tom Sullivan and University Librarian Wendy Pradt Lougee at a 3:00 p.m. ceremony on Wednesday, April 22 in Walter Library.

Interdisciplinary Research for Religious Studies - Library Workshop

Explore online resources for studying religion from a variety of perspectives: history, textual studies, classical studies, anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Learn about new library services to support your work. Research tools including ATLA, Encyclopedia Judaica, Oxford Islamic Studies Online, and more will be covered. Session is led by the librarians in the four subject fields: Laura Dale Bischof (Classical Studies), Susan Gangl (Religious Studies), Laurel Haycock (Psychology) and Nancy Herther (Sociology & Anthropology). NOTE: There will be an OPTIONAL 1/2 hour beyond the listed time for more hands-on searching plus a brief tour of print and CD resources in Wilson Reference.
