Leg Spin

I have been a spin bowler for as long as I can remember.....I used to bowl off spinners but I got called out for chucking (throwing instead of bowling). So I starting bowling leg spin...its sort of hard to chuck with leg spin bowling..though I have to say its much tougher to leg spin than off spin .Oh!...before I ramble in to this...let me clarify a leg spin is a ball that moves saway from the batsman while an off spinner come in to the batsman.
So...I have been trying to master this leg spin deal ...for a few years....and I think I did quite get it about 5 years ago...but then I had a 4 year hiatus before I revisted the game of cricket this Spring....boy its so hard to get in to the groove again.
And a good realization came last week ...oh I was hit to all parts of the ground and they were all long hops..I am not particularly discouraged , but its going to take a lot of practice for me to hit the mark consistently. I yearn to be a good leg spinner...a La Shane Warne!
Leg spinners can be luxury in a team coz on days they dont get the line and legth right they are liability and could be belted away for runs....on days they are brilliant and virtually unplayable.
That unplaybility is what I need to work on...I guess practice is the only solution...to not getting hit...it was humbling ..this past week I think I gave away like 20 runs in an over...
This past wek I have been reading the bbc cricket academy on art of leg spin and I hope I can emulate some of what I read.
Well..we will see and will keep you posted on my rendezvous with leg spin bowling.

i am 15 and i bowl off-spin and leg-spin. i am pretty good at off spin as i can get some turn but when i bowls leg spin i dont seem to get any turn or much bounce. my grip is okay but still i dont get any wickets with leg spinning and give away too many runs.

i am a leg spinner from india because of the humid climate the wickets donot give much spin some years back o used to get a lot of spin and got some scalps also but nowadays there is very less or no spin. there is one more problem most of my deliveries get a lot of flight and the balls become full tosses

Its crazy but will be fun to watch warney in the windies

Posted by: Johnv at May 17, 2006 7:17 PM

the leg spin art is enigmatic ,mastery of it can create magic ,snatching difficult wins and being the prime bowler for the team. Accuracy is the most important part, to get wickets pitching the ball in the right areas is important and imparting the right spin on every ball.the guru of legspin is richie benaud ,warne himself learnt from him,he tells that legspin stock ball is bowled from the first joint of the middle finger while holding the seam of the ball,he is the only bowler of spin who has baffled the indian batsmen

well - i suggest that weight training may help u increase strength in fingers, wrists, forearms and shoulders where the most strain is. practice aiming at a wall which is the length of a cricket pitch away - this should help in length. Use wickets to help with line. ur pace should be 60-90km/h. use a cocked wrist and roundarm action. Trust me - Im an aussie 16yrs. angle ball at 45 seam position to get drift, bounce and spin. Rip ur wrist when bowling to get max revs.

Guru out.

I am 12 years old in canada. I love bowling Leg spin and gets lot of spin. But my problem is that i get my 3rd finger brused. Can some one guide me to solve my broblem. Thanks Jeevan

Posted by: jeevanjot sidhu at August 26, 2007 8:39 PM

Bruising! That's the first time I've heard of that problem. Im an Aussie-17 and I (and others) mostly rip the skin off the spinning finger.

If it's bruising, apply ice at the end of your training session, or when you come off at the end of a game. During training, try not to go for the newest ball in the kit as these have tougher seams, lets face it, it is unlikely for a spinner to open the bowling so try to go for a ball with that represents one you would use on game day. I hope that helps...

But all in all, learn to enjoy pain because that's what all leg spinners are in for. I've been to the chiropractor many a time, busted my ac joint, pulled countless muscles, sore wrist, sore fingers. Perhaps I'm just injury prone, but I believe that Warnie has had many operations as well.

Leg spin puts much stress on the body. It's not just strolling up to the wicket, rolling your arm over, lobbing the ball above the batsman's eyes and hoping for the best. Each ball is an effort ball because if you don't hit that spot, chances are you will be crunched for runs. With quick bowlers, they can stray down the legside and get away with it, spinners don't have that luxery.

Don't let me put you off though. There is nothing like going out there on a Saturday and cleaning up, winning matches for the team or getting a breakthrough. That makes it all worthwhile.

Good luck!

HI I BOWL LEG SPIN I PLAYD HIGHER GRADE OF CRICKET AS A LEG SPINNER FOR OUR STATE BUT THEN I HAD LEFT SHOULDER INJURY AND FROM THAT TIME I M NOT ABLE TO GET CONTROL ON MY LINE N LENGTH CAN U SUGGEST ME WHAT I CAN DO.

Posted by: BALJEET at December 16, 2007 9:12 AM

i am struggling with accuracy while i think i have basic right(hip, shoulder, foot along with target)

Posted by: Anonymous at October 31, 2008 10:06 AM

To bowl legspin is not that difficult. If you are able to roll your wrist around, that combined with the general overall bowling action generates the leg spin. I bowled legspin reasonably well in my younger days, but it took long hours of repetition to get the rhythm right. But after that it just became automatic.

Leg spin might be difficult to master, but once you've got most of its variations down, it can be quite handy to unleash against some of the lesser batsmen. There are a few videos on youtube from Shane Warne's coach, Terry Jenner, that are quite helpful.

I am a fast bowler, but like to try the spin bowling.Whenever I try for legspin bowling, the ball turns other way and I just keep banging my head to find out the reason why.

Posted by: dravid at November 23, 2009 11:32 AM

I am a wicket keeper and i find very difficult to keep for leg spin compare to off spin.Batting is easy for off spin compare to leg sin.

Posted by: Government jobs India at February 11, 2010 11:15 PM

Really it is amazing. weight training with a good coach can help us to increase stamina, grip to catch ball and much more.
So it is a game of practice and practice.

Leg spin in my mind is the greatest art there is in cricket. I'd recommend going on youtube and watching videos from Terry Jenner. He's the guy that coached Shane Warne.

Your idea is outstanding; the problem is something that not sufficient persons are speaking intelligently about. I am very comfortable that I stumbled throughout this in my search for one thing regarding this.

Leg spin? Have you thought of trying weight training with dumbbells?

Posted by: Regis Dumbbells Guy at May 17, 2011 9:25 AM

Shane Warne truely was one of the best spinners of all time - Good luck with your game!

Posted by: Cricket Memorabilia at May 24, 2011 1:40 AM

Leg spinning is actually and art and does not come easy to most but once you get the hang of it, it becomes one of the most powerful weapons in the sport. Being away from the game for 4 years makes you rusty but if you work on your variations in flight you should bounce right back. All the best

I tried leg spinning but it's very difficult than off spinning. So still off spinner at my college team

Posted by: Live Cricket Asia at June 8, 2011 2:59 PM

Shane Warne is probably the greatest leg spinner of all time I have listed below some tips.
Coaching Principles:
Polish the ball take a relatively short run up to the wicket possibly around 8-10 paces not a straight run rather more an angled approach, lean forward, long strides, concentrate on the delivery, Shane Warne used to concentrate on he wanted the batsman to play the ball
A typical speed should be around 45-55 mph this might sound fast but it does produce the best results especially in the slips, as the ball needs to deviate sharply from right to leftTo grip the ball for a leg-spinning delivery, the ball should be held in the palm with the seam parallel to the palm. The first two fingers slightly apart gripping the ball, and the third and fourth fingers close together and rest held not to tight against the side of the ball. The first bend of the third finger should grasp the seam. The thumb resting against the side is up to the bowler, but should impart no pressure. When the ball is bowled, the third finger will apply most of the spin. The wrist is cocked as it comes down by the hip, and the wrist moves sharply from right to left as the ball is released, adding more spin. The ball is tossed up to provide flight. The batsman will see the hand with the palm facing towards them when the ball is released. it would also be a good idea to include the googly in your arsenal as the reduced pace and alternate speed induce a mistake by the batsman and lead to a catch probably at mid on.
I hope this has helped
Best of luck

It is amazing how much exercise you get while bowling. I have been in the gym for 6 years and i am always sore when done with a couple of games. Amazing!
