A series of earthquakes hit China's Qinghai province early Wednesday, killing 589 and injuring 10,000 residents.
The magnitude of the quake reached 6.9 at 7:49 a.m. reported CNN. There were a series of aftershocks within hours of the first, one recorded at 5.8 magnitude.
Several schools collapsed, such as Yushu Vocational School, as a result of the quake reported the Star Tribune, killing 56 students.
The Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ordered officials to help the victims of the earthquake reported CNN. Vice Premier Hui Liangyu was sent to the site.
About 1,000 people have been taken from the rubble alive and sent to several different locations to be treated reported CNN.
