Leadership is a quality that possesses many characteristic, whether they are born or learned characteristics. It requires a leader to focus on the interest of their followers as well as the ability to stay true to their personal values. Being a leader often involves making difficult decisions to help guide themselves and others down the right path. These decisions are not easy and often deals with both answers being correct but leading toward two different paths.

Leadership is a quality that possesses many characteristic, whether they are born or learned characteristics. It requires a leader to focus on the interest of their followers as well as the ability to stay true to their personal values. While focusing on the interest of followers, a leader needs to respect their beliefs and decisions as well. Being a leader often involves making difficult decisions to help guide themselves and others down the right path. These decisions are not easy and often deals with both answers being correct but leading toward two different paths.

Analysis:
My definition has not changed now for the past few weeks and I remain confident in this definition. Throughout the semester I have read many good articles to help make my definition concrete. One article I read was about qualities of a servant leader stated by, Barbuto, J. E., & Wheeler, D. W. (2007). Some of these qualities a person is born with and some qualities they learn to develop. Some of these qualities can include listening, being empathetic, and building community. I still agree strongly with what Lee, R. J., & King, S. N. (2001) talked about previously about deciding our personal values guiding our leadership vision and how this can be difficult. Kidder, R. M. (2003) talks about right versus right and how either path can be correct but making that decision can really be a struggle. Kegan, R., & Lahey, L. L. (2009) talk about how people have their one big thing that they often need to work on and how that can sometimes get in the way of their leadership ability. That is where my respect for followers and the decisions they make as well come in. We cannot decide for them. In another weeks articles it is talked about challenges in working within a group. This to me continues to hold true with my definition because I talk about needing to attract followers. By having followers and leaders it helps to make a up a group, how well that group functions is a different story.

Updated Definition:
Leadership is a quality that possesses many characteristics. It requires people to look into the interest of their followers as well as staying true to their values. Being a leader involves being able to make difficult decisions to help guide others down the right path. These decisions often do not have a black and white answer and which ever path is chosen is correct.

Analysis:
As more information is brought to my attention and I get different view points, my definition continues to evolve. I still agree strongly with what Lee, R. J., & King, S. N. (2001) talked about last week about deciding our personal values guiding our leadership vision and how this can be difficult. I think this weeks reading goes along with making difficult decisions. Kidder, R. M. (2003) talks about right versus right and how either path can be correct but making that decision can really be a struggle.

Not only do we need to be able to make decisions and provide direction to others. What is also need to be a leader as stated by Rath, T. & Conchie, B. (2009) "you are only a leader if others follow" (Rath, T. & Conchie, B. (2009) pg. 79). Some of the qualities they discuss that a follower looks for in a leader includes "trust, compassion, stability, and hope" (Rath, T. & Conchie, B. (2009) pg. 82). I agree and have had experience regarding these qualities and trying to be a follower. Often times at work I do not trust my boss due to his lack of follow through on what he says. Because of this I struggle with performing to my full potential.

Leadership is a quality that possesses many characteristics. It requires people to look at what will interest their followers as well as stay true to there values. Being a leader means being able to make decisions and guide others down the right path with a vision in mind.

Analysis: This week taught me that leadership can include many characteristics and often times we need to develop our own personal vision before we can develop our leadership vision. I believe this has great truth to it, without knowing what our own vision is it is difficult to lead others. Lee, R. J., & King, S. N. (2001) talk about how we need to decide our personal values to guide our leadership values and how this is not an easy task to do.

Initial Post: When I think of leadership I think of someone who can take charge of a situation and provide others with necessary direction. I think of a person who can make decisions that fits their own needs as well of the needs of others. Leadership is taking a stance for what you believe in and holding the confidence in your decisions and beliefs. Leadership is a skill that is important and often times people lack. I feel I am one of those people that lack those leadership skills but have the potential to gain them, and is a goal of mine.

Updated Definition: When thinking about leading our vision does not always take us to our audience. This however is a very important aspect of our leadership. Not only do we need to be able to make decisions and provide direction to others. What is also need to be a leader as stated by Rath, T. & Conchie, B. (2009) "you are only a leader if others follow" (Rath, T. & Conchie, B. (2009) pg. 79). Because of this I struggle with performing to my full potential.

Analysis: This week I have definitely added on to my definition of leadership. It changed because a different aspect of leadership was pointed out in the reading by Rath and Conchie on why people follow which I found to be true and forced me to think more on the idea of leadership and everything needed when being a leader. I find the course readings to be helpful and to open my eyes to new ideas. What I found particularly interesting was considering the qualities a follower looks for as stated in Rath and Conchie's article. The four main qualities include, "trust, compassion, stability, and hope", (Rath, T. & Conchie, B. (2009) pg. 82).
