Facebook Experiment

So just out of curiosity, and partly because I was using facebook too much and needed a break, I deactivated my facebook. For that week, I used y computer a lot less, I did not think about old friends that I usually keep in touch with via facebook, and my mind was just much clearer and focused. But in addition to all these good things that were happening to me, I have to admit every now and then I yearned to reactivate it once again. I wanted to reactivate it partly because I could, reiterating the fact that I had control of facebook and it is not a complicated computer thing that isn't out of my understanding. I also wanted to reactivate it because I missed the social benefits it provided. The funniest part of my little experiment was that several friends from back home and around the country called me to find out why I was no longer on facebook. They looked me up and couldn't find my page and instantly though either I was mad at them and blocked them, or something had happened to me. Friends I hadn't talked to in over a year were calling me to ask if I was alright. It was as if my canceling of my facebook page was like me writing my own obituary in the eyes of all my facebook friends. This shows the power of a social network but it also shows the unreliability of the internet. The internet may make socializing easier (for some people) but it will never be as long-lasting and personal as face-to-face encounters.

That's the spirit! That seems like a brave experiment--did you actually miss anything important over the week? Anything critical? Would you suggest others give this a go? Perhaps, at least, just to see who *really* cares enough to notice and call. Will your use of Facebook change now that you've experienced going without it?

Anyone else have thoughts on Andrew's experiment?
