ACES Journal

My first day at ACES and I worked with Joe in the “Design It group. The project for today’s session was to design an entirely new game and come up with a set of rules for it. The students had already started on their games the week before, so I helped them to elaborate on the rules and finish making some of their game pieces and equipment. After finishing we worked on math homework, and I helped a few students who were doing fraction and decimal problems. After the homework period was finished we went into the gym and played basketball.

I worked in the “Design It group with Joe again, but this time with an older group of students. The project was the same as last time, but instead of finishing they were just starting the project. Since I had been there to help the last group finish their projects I had a good idea of how to help the students get started on their games. After working on their projects some of the students worked on homework, but most had none. We went to the gym after doing homework, and most of the students played soccer or basketball.

I switched groups today and worked with T and the 6th graders. They worked on homework most of the time, and were doing an assignment that required they interview each other. I didn’t need to help the students with their homework much, so a majority of my work consisted of walking to their lockers with them when they needed to get something. I went with them to the gym after the homework session was done again.

I worked with the “Design It group again and there were only three students in the group this time. The project for today was to draw a picture of condensation, evaporation, or sublimation happening. The pictures they drew were very creative, and they put a lot of effort into them. When they weren’t working on their pictures I administered a survey that ACES requires to their students. I asked them questions about stuff such as how much they liked school and ACES. It was nice enough to go outside today, so when they were done with homework went outside to the playground.
